Finally out on my own. I had to get disowned to do it, to get my freedom, but here I am. In the slums of London, waiting tables for shillings while I try to solve some cases on the side.

Not the dream life I envisioned when I left New York and my parent’s watchful eyes. The champagne doesn’t flow freely and the parties are non-existent. At least for me.

When he walked in from the constant London rain, I noticed him right away. He’s tall. Over 6’3” at least. Being short, I notice the tall ones. The ones that tower over me and have a possibly dangerous advantage.

He took off his Rattlesnake Cowboy Hat and shook the water from it, removed his coat and sauntered over to the only corner table left in the place.

I glanced over at Mary, the night manager, tilted my head in his direction, letting her know that I’ve got him. She had a small smile on her face, almost smug in it’s knowledge.

“Evening sir, what can I get for you tonight?”

"Close your eyes, dear."

She did. And I put the jewelers box in her hand.

"Okay. Now open them."

I was excited. And scared.

I opened my eyes, and I'm sure they widened in shock.

It was NOT a ring box. It was long and flat. Inside was a beautiful 14k gold bracelet.

He took it from my hands and put it on. He told me it was a sign of his devotion and claim. He smiled slightly at that last part.

"Thank you so much! It's wonderful!" I reached up on tip-toe and kissed his lips. It really was gorgeous and it was a surprise. Still that small part of me was slightly disappointed it wasn't a ring.

I still had till December though. And with that thought, I took his hand as we headed into the muggy London night for our nightly walk.

It's been such a wonderful week. I was sick the last two days. But it was wonderful.

Jeremy took care of me. He hauled his radio over to my place so we could sit on the couch and listen to programs while I tried to get better. He even made me soup! Was that ever an odd sight! But it was pretty decent. I'm not sure where he learned to cook, but he's pretty good at it.

Since my sickness has seemed to pass, I guess I have to get back to work. But I know he will be in later and that truly is the highlight of my day.

We had plans to go out tonight. The weather was surprisingly clear. A nice warm night with no fog. He suggested we go and get some sandwiches and eat by the bridge and watch the night river traffic. So when he showed up at my door dressed like a gentleman, it gave me pause.

“Should I go change?” I asked, worried because I just had on a simple every day skirt and blouse. And my gray two tone heels from work. He said no, that what I was wearing was just fine.

He nodded to the Matron and told her that we’d be out pretty late and that I might miss the curfew. She smiled and told him it would be fine. He had her wrapped around his little finger by our second date. Of course she wouldn’t mind.

As we drove towards the bridge, I suggested the little Underground Car diner to get our sandwiches from. He said no. Let’s go down by the river and see what’s there. As we got nearer to the riverfront, he said, “How about Chez Fromage?”

“I don’t know. I’m not really dressed for that and don’t you need reservations?”

He said not to worry about it and let’s just swing by and see if we can get in. I was worried, but I agreed to go anyway

When we got there he walked right up to the Maître d’ and said, “Reservation for King”, with a confident tone.

All I could think was, “Is he really trying to BS his way into Chez Fromage? Is he kidding? This is never going to work.”

But the Maître d’ just said, “Right this way sir.” And led us to a private booth.
I was so excited. I had such a big grin on my face.

“This is such a nice surprise. A fancy dinner! I can’t believe you went to all this trouble.”

As we waited for the waiter to bring our menus, the Maître d’ was headed back to our table with a vase of flowers. And not just any flowers, a dozen long stem red roses in a crystal vase.

“For the lady.”

I can’t believe it, but the smile on my face got even bigger. I can’t believe I have such a romantic guy. He sure is a keeper.

After we ordered and the waiter took the menus away, Jeremy started squirming in his seat like he was uncomfortable. Up until this point, I had just thought this was a special dinner, a night of romance. Nothing more.

And then it hit me. And as it hit me he got up and came to my side of the booth.

I knelt down in front of her and opened the box that had been burning a hole in my pocket for weeks. The night I bought the ring is the same night I bought her bracelet. It was to throw of the trail, because I do love a good surprise.

“Terra, I love you. Would you spend the rest of your life with me?”

I stared at the ring in amazement. It was a heart shaped diamond in a gold setting and it was lovely. But not nearly as lovely as the sight of the man in front of me, asking me to be his wife. I didn’t even have to think about it. Not really.

“Yes!”

As he slipped the ring onto my finger, applause could be heard throughout the restaurant.

26 days. We’d known each other for 26 days, but it already seemed a lifetime. And now, we’d get to spend another lifetime together as a family. How wonderful.

THE END.

Author's Note:

Now, if you take away the Sleuth aspect, London and the diner and replace them with a 18 yr old Taco Bell Drive thru girl and a 19 year old construction worker from Michigan, you’ll have the ACTUAL story of how my husband of 9 years and myself met and got engaged. Down to the 26 days.

Don’t be mad. The basic facts are the same, but the writing was my own and new. He really did ask me out at the drive thru window, and for whatever reason, I said yes. And he did take me on some of the dates described. And I did kiss him first. And he did take me to a fancy restaurant like above. And I did say yes. But everything written around that was written on the fly.
