Finally out on my own. I had to get disowned to do it, to get my freedom, but here I am. In the slums of London, waiting tables for shillings while I try to solve some cases on the side.

Not the dream life I envisioned when I left New York and my parent’s watchful eyes. The champagne doesn’t flow freely and the parties are non-existent. At least for me.

When he walked in from the constant London rain, I noticed him right away. He’s tall. Over 6’3” at least. Being short, I notice the tall ones. The ones that tower over me and have a possibly dangerous advantage.

He took off his Rattlesnake Cowboy Hat and shook the water from it, removed his coat and sauntered over to the only corner table left in the place.

I glanced over at Mary, the night manager, tilted my head in his direction, letting her know that I’ve got him. She had a small smile on her face, almost smug in it’s knowledge.

“Evening sir, what can I get for you tonight?”

I’d had a couple cases tossed my way the day before. A chance to start proving myself to the Sleuthing community. I had been torn. Pass the cases on and go to the diner, hoping to get a glimpse of the stranger? Or take the cases and earn some decent money and learn some things while doing it? It had been a hard decision to make. But money won out in the end. My rent was coming due and I had to pay my share for the phone in my rooming house. So last night I sleuthed instead of waited tables. Apparently I should’ve waited tables.

When I got into work that night, Mary pulled me aside. She said the tall stranger from a couple days ago was in here, asking for me. She told me that she’d told him I’d be back tonight. But now she was worried she’d done something wrong. He did look kind of dangerous.

I told her not worry. I knew how to take care of myself. Being a 5’2” baby sister of three, older, larger, and meaner brothers taught me how to hold my own against men. A Pearl Handed Dirk strapped to my thigh didn’t hurt either.

But as luck would have it, when he came in that night, we were slammed. The drizzle had turned to a down pour and people were seeking shelter in any dive they could. Even ours. I saw him sit down at the counter. I wanted to head over there and talk to him, but I was busy with a table of rowdy flappers trying to put enough money together for three cups of tea and two pieces of pie to share between the seven of them. So instead I just smiled real big at him and turned back to the mess in front of me. (They ended up having just enough with a penny leftover.)

By the time I had a chance to head over and talk to him, he was gone. And so was most everyone else. The down pour had stopped and everyone had cleared out.

I stood dejectedly behind the counter, just staring at it’s dull, faded top, when someone sat down in front of me. Without even looking up I asked “What can I get for you tonight?”

I looked up in surprise and met the most handsome hazel eyes I’d ever seen.

I didn’t even think about it. I just wrote my rooming house number on a slip of paper and handed it over.

“My name is Terra.”

When she handed me that slip of paper, I was amazed. I was sure that line wouldn’t work.

“ I’m Jeremy. Would you like to go out with me? Maybe to a picture show tomorrow?” I wasn’t taking any chances. I just jumped right in and asked her.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Of course there were some things to take care of first. I saw her the night before. She forgets, I'm an old hand at this. Just because I started a new life, appearing as a novice, doesn't mean I don't still have the old skills.

I'm not sure what Ms. Lane wants, but I do intend to find out.

My first date with Jeremy. And my first picture show in a long time. It was amazing. After the show he drove me home in his roadster and parked in the drive of my house. I could see the Matron looking out the window, house coat and scowl firmly attached to her person.

We talked all night about everything. Well past the curfew for the rooming house.

He didn’t try to kiss me though.

But we did make plans to see each other the next night. Maybe get a bite to eat. Someplace OTHER than the diner.

She looked amazing. Of course, this wasn't a surprise.

The entire time during the show, all I could think was she smelled wonderful.

After the show we decided to just head back to her place. It was quite late and I didn't want to chance getting her in trouble with the lady who ran the joint. She didn't seem all that friendly.

We spent the rest of the night and part of the morning talking in my roadster. Just talking. About everything. Our families, our experiences here in London and in New York, our trials at becoming detectives.

At the end of night I wanted to kiss her. I really did. But since Rachel, I've been hesitant with becoming involved with women. But I liked this girl. This girl gave me permanent kind of ideas.

I'd wait to kiss her. Till it felt right.

"Goodnight, Terra. I'll see you tomorrow after work. Sweet dreams."

I know mine will be.

I called Terra at 4:00 am this morning.

"I have to take an agency member to the train station in about an hour. Would you like to go with me and then I can take you back to my place and make you some breakfast? I make a mean chocolate pancake."

"That'd be great! I would love to have breakfast with you."

He picked me up and we took his agency member to the train station. When we got back to his place, he actually sat me down at the table and proceeded to make me the best chocolate chip pancakes I've ever had.

For a second date, it wasn't half bad.

It's been a hectic week. Not much of a chance to talk to Terra. I have been able to stop by the diner for some pie and a cup of joe, but she's been so busy she can only say "hi" and smile before someone else needs to be waited on.

When I stop in tonight, there is an unusual lull. So I take no chances and get a quick word in.

"I was thinking we could go out again. Maybe this Wednesday? Mary said you had the day off. I know a great restaurant uptown."

"Wednesday sounds good. Alone time sounds really good." I give him a saucy wink and brush against him as I head back up to the counter.

When is he gonna kiss me? It's been days. This will be our third date. My mother always told me to let the man take the lead. That being to forward would say things about me. But then again, my mother also told me that I was no better than I had to be and I'd never amount to anything other than some two-bit corner floozy.

So maybe I'd be ignoring my mother in this case.
