All I can remember is that the movie starts with one man fantasizing/imagining/dreaming about being a detective. Parts of the movie are black and white noir, and the other part is his normal life I think. I don`t know how this sounds, but I can`t find the movie since I don`t remember anything else, so if it rings a bell tell me and if I see it I`ll know for sure if that`s the one. Thanks.

The only bell that's ringing for me is 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', but I don't know if the black & white thing fits. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039808/). Do you have an idea when it was made?

I like how this one sounds as well, but I think mine is not that old. Maybe 90s...

Hmm, I'm intrigued about tracking this one down now! The only 90s film I can think of which had both black & white noir sequences and modern-day colour is 'Dead Again' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101669/), but it doesn't quite fit with your outline - he's a detective in real life having visions of a different past.
