eI have to admit that I was quite fond of Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldan, as well as the Meg mystery books. Hardy Boys did nothing for me, but that could have just been a plumbing issue.

Hardy Boys was always a little dissappointing to me, actually. My impression was that the Nancy Drew books were just better written, but I haven't looked recently, so who knows. I like some of the lighter weight series quite a bit, like Encyclopedia Brown.

Recently, mys wife has gotten me into reading Patricia Cornwall books (hence their prominence in the quizes). I'm in the middle of The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler right now. Actually, if you read the beginning of The Big Sleep, and compare it to my first Featured Mystery, The Unread Will, you can notice some similarities.

I was a real Agatha Christie junkie between the ages of 8 and 10. I think nostalgia of all that is why Sleuth appeals to me now, quite a few years later. Apart from that, I'm not a huge detective novel person right now.

I am a big literature person, though. Literature student :) So don't even get me started on books. Of my favourite novels, the one closest to the detective/mystery genre would probably be The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

By the way, I always found Nancy Drew rather boring and childish. I used to hope something bad would actually happen to her in one of the books, because knowing she'd ALWAYS get out of trouble drove me crazy. But get out she did, every time :)

Yes, I am reading Sherlock Holmes now.

By the way I read that Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew) is not actually one writer but actually a group of writers hired by the publisher to all write under this name. Is this true?

That's what I've heard as well about many similar series. Ghost writing has been an enormous industry ever since the advent of the dime novel. So I wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised to hear this.

Also, considering "Carolyn Keene" has been writing books since my grandmother was a child....:)

I had forgotten about the Encyclopedia Brown books until a few days ago, when I came across a book of 2 Minute Mysteries, by Sobule. Man, those books were fun!!!

My favorite as a kid of the group efforts was Conan.
I'm not a fan of Agatha Christie, except the Poirot series on PBS with Suchet.
Voraciously read every Doyle I could get my hands on as a youngster too. (Even those not about Holmes.)
