Hello all.
I'm fairly new to Sleuth and I thought I might share a little hobby of mine with you all. Here's something for that sad moment when the mysteries of the day are all done.

Thousands lay up gold within this house,
but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house,
but no man wards it.
What is it?

The reason why I can not see down the basement is because it is dark. When I operate the three switches I can look down in to the basement to see which room lights up from operating the three switches.

Or...

I simply walk down once, and walk in to each room to switch on the light. It doesn't require me to make a trip up stairs each time I switch on a light.

There is a robot that is programmed to assemble children's toys. During lab tests, the robot assembled 100s of toys without any problem. The day arrived when the robot was given a public demonstration and as Murphy's law would have it, everything went wrong. The toy pieces were put in a carton and brought to the pubkc demonstration. The robot was given the carton filled with toy pieces, but it was unable to assemble a single toy. What went wrong?

Maybe the robot needs the toys to be laid on the floor. It can't get to the parts because they are still in the carton...Not sure if this is right.

Nikkie - was the robot incapable of opening cartons?

As to the light bulb riddle, way off! You cannot see the light from the switches and you can't see the switches from the light. You can only visit the basement once and, yes, obviously, you can see all of the lights while you're down there. It's basically a case of 1) manipulate light switches and 2) go down and have a look. With those actions, you have to determine which switch operates which light.

Blaise-

1) From the top of the stairs, turn on switch (A) and (B). Leave switch (C) off.

2) After waiting for a minute or so, turn off switch (B).

3) Go downstairs.

4) The light that is still on is controlled by switch (A)...don't tough it, it's hot "ouch".

5) carefully feel the two lights that are turned off. The warm one is controlled by switch (B) and the coll one by switch (C).

This is a really cool thread guys! A missionary I stayed with once had many fun riddles that we spent hours trying to solve. Alas I cannot remember any in their entirety to share! *sniff* So I shall keep trying to solve these before I read the answers. :-D
