Hello all.
I'm fairly new to Sleuth and I thought I might share a little hobby of mine with you all. Here's something for that sad moment when the mysteries of the day are all done.

Thousands lay up gold within this house,
but no man made it.
Spears past counting guard this house,
but no man wards it.
What is it?

Alright, here's yet another Dr. H. adaptation:

It had been a rainy week, with sharp winds whipping the water into icy bullets. Lady May invited Dr. March to her house for dinner and a game. When he arrived, he found her bound and gagged on her bed, her jewelry box upended and her safe broken open. He untied her, and she pointed to the open balcony doors, sobbing that the thief had left five hours earlier, leaving her in the cold for all that time.

He checked her belongings, finding two particularly expensive furs and several small gems missing. He examined the room, finding that the roses by the balcony had scattered petals across the carpet at its threshold. He spoke to the butler, who said he had been given the night off.

Then he laughed and said "I didn't know the game would happen before dinner."

What gave the game away?

The rose petals would have blown away with the wind, the carpet would have been soaked. It supposedly had been 5 hours since the the theif left with the balcony doors open.

Spotted a great site for riddles like these: look for "The Two-Minute Mystery Solve-It Club."

And yes, cfmdec, you are right. (Are mine too easy?)

I don't think yours are easy, Majandra. They just go with this site theme well. Information gathering and spotting out of place items are probably things we are all good at, that's part of what draws us to the game. These word play riddles I'll likely never solve. :)

(Phew.) Thus reassured, I present to y'all another riddle.

Dr. March was called to eminent numismatist Lord August's mansion by his nephew. He arrived to find the older man, who apparently had just returned from a dinner party, dead on the floor. A bullet hole spoiled the lapel of his formal tailcoat.

Dr. March bent carefully to examine the body. The blood had only just begun to soak through, almost obscuring the tiny gold glint showing just behind the rose boutonniere. He stood back up and put a hand on the distraught young man's shoulder, leading him into the kitchen for some tea.

As he rummaged in cupboards, shaking several unmarked canisters in the search of Earl Grey, Dr. March asked if the old man had a will. The nephew said yes, describing a few items of note, including an invaluable gold Croesus that his uncle kept hidden somewhere.

Suddenly, Dr. March paused. He had just finished juggling a particularly large canister off a shelf, which he opened and set on the counter. "Check the flower, would you?"

The nephew gasped suddenly and ran out of the room, returning a few minutes later with the tiny gold coin.

Dr. March punched the murderer in the face.

What gave the nephew away?

Jstkdn-

A: If you add 2 hours to 11 o'clock, you you get 1 o'clock.

Alternate answer, if you add 2 to 11 you get 1 baker's dozen.
