Heimlich VonVictor

October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

How do these things keep happening? That was the thought on Eric's mind as the car lurched to a stop outside of the docks. Abby jumped out of the driver's seat, and Eric followed her.

"Where did you hide this thing that you didn't think they would find it?" Eric asked.

"Over here!" Abby said quickly as she walked towards the end of a dock. She came to an abrupt stop and pointed into the bay. "It's at the bottom. Marked by a Coca-Cola bottle. When you find it, dig under."

Eric sighed. He didn't suppose it paid to ask; it was clear he was going in. He unbuttoned his shirt and dove in. The water wasn't too deep, and it wasn't long before he felt the soft sand in his fingers. He felt around for the bottle, among the bed of shells, cans, and just about every other order of foul refuse. Finally his hand clasped around a cold glass cylinder.

He pushed it out of the way and began to dig frantically. He swore as his nail bent back against something solid. He grasped his hands around it and pulled with all his might. The buried object came loose with a sickening sucking sound. Eric felt his lungs burn as they screamed for oxygen. He kicked of the ground, flapping frantically with one arm, and clutching the heavy object under the other. The light grew closer and still Eric felt his heart pounding against his empty lungs. He gave one last powerful kick as his head broke the surface and the lifegiving oxygen flowed into his lungs.

He paddled himself over to the dock and threw the heavy object onto it. "A conch shell?" Eric asked as he pulled himself out of the water, "The catalyst is a conch shell?"

Abby laughed as she picked it up, "Of course not!" she reached inside and removed what appeared to be a golden eye socket with long lashes. "This is the catalyst. It was kept at a museum in London, and I managed to secure it for their mission." she said.

Eric shook his head. "Absolutely amazing Abby." he said, while trying to catch his breath.

Eric kept his hand on his weapon as he and Abby walked down the long hallway underneath City Hall.

"Whatever happens," Abby whispered, "do not let them get the catalyst. If they do, then they have no need for us."

They came to a large stone door with ancient carvings. Heavy whispering could be heard from beyond the door. Abby reached out and took hold of a large bone carved handle. With all her might she swung and delivered a loud knock. The room beyond fell silent. A heavy thundering came as the door lurched open and a brown hooded figure stood before them.

"Have you brought the catalyst?" the figure asked in a deep gravely voice.

"Yes," Abby responded, "and it will be presented in good time." The figure stared blankly at them for a moment before stepping aside and beckoning for the pair to enter.

As they stepped through, an immediate chill was felt, and the large stone door slammed shut behind them. The room was surrounded by hooded figures, each holding a single lit candle, each standing stoically in a circle. In the center were two young girls that he had never seen before and an older man. Sergei! The two men locked eyes, he had seen him! No! He couldn't say anything now. This was their only chance.

It was only then that he noticed a large stone throne, covered by a sheet, with a figure underneath. His eyes locked to it and he felt the breath drain out of him.

"Whooooooo haaaaassssss eeeeeennnnteeeeereeed?" a deep throaty voice hissed from under the sheet.

A hooded figured stepped forward, bent down on one knee and spoke, "My lord, the catalyst bearer, a member of the Order, has arrived."

"Noooo!" The figure hissed as it made a jerking motion, "Theeeereee iiiiiissss aaaaanooothhhher."

The hooded figure glanced at Eric, and then back towards the figure. "My lord, a man by the name of Eric Marvington. A detective of sorts. He bears no threat."

"Eriiiiic Maarrrvington! Come closer!" came the voice from under the sheet as the figure made a beckoning movement. As if hypnotized by the words, Eric felt himself floating towards the mysterious figure. His heart beat heavily against his chest. The heavy breathing from beneath the sheet grew louder as he drew closer. He was mere feet away when he felt his body stop.

"Teeeeellll meeee Eriiiiic Maaarvington... dooo yooouu wiiish tooo ennnnriiiiccch yoooouuurrr miiiinnnd?" the hissing voice beckoned to him.

Eric wanted to answer, but his voice was caught in his throat. It felt as if a hand was clasped across his neck, preventing him from talking. Beads of sweat poured down his face.

"Yooouu wiiilll neeeveeerr leaaarn uuuunnnnleeessssss yoooouuuuu aaassk!" the hissing voice commanded at him as it threw off the sheet. Eric gazed at the face in horror as the Order fell to their knees. He felt his knees go weak as he turned his head and vomited with full force. He stared into the eyes of the figure before him and felt his very soul burned. He turned and ran back towards Abby, who was kneeling near the door. He dropped to his knee next to her as tears flowed down his face.

"Now you see why I need you Eric." she whispered to him.

Mrs. Kobetz brewed Anais and Zeo some strong coffee which they badly needed. It was early morning, and no one had any idea where Sergei or the girls were located.

"Can you tell me again what the person on the phone said?" Zeo repeated.

"It was a man. He said, 'if Barnes is not found guilty, we will kill your husband!'" The plump Russian woman's voice was shaking. "We not weak of heart, we Russians, but something in his voice told me that he wouldn't blink before stabbing my husband in the heart." Anais tried to calm Katia, but she was charged with anxiety herself.

"Could you make out any noise in the background? Cars, trains, birds... anything?" Katia shook her head. Zeo lit another cigarette, noticing that he had already gone through a whole pack. "What about his voice? Was it deep? Baritone? Any accent?"

The kettle whistled and Katia went to fetch the hot water.

"PLEASE, I NEED YOU TO FOCUS ON THIS !!!!!" Zeo howled. Both ladies stared at the thin detective as if they met him for the first time. Zeo snuffed out his cigarette. "I'm sorry. I can't sit around waiting. I'm heading for the bureau, see if i can get any lead to who called this house last night. Stay with the phone!" Zeo ordered Anais and Katia and stormed out of the house. Both ladies were left speechless.

"Is this man always been like this?" Katia finally asked.

Anais shook her head. "No, never. Joseph is one of the most quiet person I'd ever known."

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CANNOT TRACE THE CALL?" Zeo's voice was hoarse from all the shouting he's done all morning.

The operators behind the rows of cables stole glances at the detective and supervisor. "Sir, I've told you three times already, the phone call comes in, we make the connections, but if we do not record the conversation at the time it was taking place, it is gone forever, and we can do nothing about it."

"Do something. Put recording devices on..."

"But detective, this is a civilian telephone operation, in no way can we tab EVERY conversation being made... You are being unreasonable."

"I DON'T CARE ABOUT UNREASONABLE, JUST DO IT!"

"Sir you have no right to order that, you're simply being insane --"

SMACK. Zeo punched the supervisor in the face and walked away. Everyone around could feel the fire burning inside him.

Zeo returned to his car and drove away quickly. In no way would he allow any harm to come upon his and Heimlich's daughters. He knew exactly where he must go next. If there was no way to find out where the kidnappers were, then only one solution was left. He would make sure Barnes will be found guilty for the crime.

"Nothing yet... Heim was in a rush, something about his brother and so... He just popped in after being out all day, ignored us, changed into a suit and scooped you up... And now we're here..." Vulkie said.

Marc and Charlie sat in a chair, across from eachother, as Marc twisted his pipe with his lips.

"We don't have a lead for now Molly..." Charlie mused and looked to Vulkie. Charlie gave a small wink and Vulkie winked back.

"Well, anyways... Charlie, let's go for a drive. I'm sure you would love to have a drive... We can go for a bit of shopping..." Vulkie said and Charlie smiled and got up.

"I'll drive..." Vulkie said, as Charlie tossed his carkeys to Vulkie.

***The Tailor Shop***

"Hmm... No... Oh, that would suit me definitely.." Vulkie said, as she looked at a royal fuchsia dress (haha Joseph. Nice reference huh? xD. See The Politician's Daughter for reference to the dress)

"500 dollars?!" Charlie almost shouted and Vulkie shushed him. "Don't worry, I can afford it. My dad, god rest his soul, left me a certain amount of money..." Vulkie said and she took the dress and went to a clothing booth.

Charlie waited outside the clothing booth, litting a cigarette. "We have no leads... This doesn't please me at all.... There's always a lead..." Charlie said and Vulkie replied with : "Yes".

Just then, Vulkie stepped out and admired the dress. Charlie whistled and Vulkie blushed.

"Astonishing" Charlie replied and Vulkie replied with a small "thank you".

And so, Vulkie paid for the dress, while she still had it on. The Tailor "cut" the price card off and Vulkie left with her old dress. And so, Charlie and Vulkie went back to Heimlich's house.

"Thank god you're back..." Molly said. "Heim's been held in custody". Vulkie and Charlie gave an astonished look and Vulkie shouted : 'WHAT?"

Molly said that Heim only had one phonecall. "Right, that's it. I'm going to try and get him out... Maybe Joseph can help a bit when he returns... (cont)

"Right, that's it. I'm going to try and get him out... Maybe Joseph can help a bit when he returns... " Vulkie said and left for the courthouse...

***Courthouse***

Vulkie entered the courthouse and slammed on the desk. "I demand to see Detective Heimlich VonVictor. He has asked me for a counselling." Vulkie replied and the bailiff brought Vulkie to Heimlich.

First, the bailiff went into the room and asked if this was all true. Heimlich nodded and the bailiff let Vulkie in.

"5 minutes. That's all you got" the bailiff said and closed the door.

"Heim... What happened?" Vulkie said and Heimlich let a tear flow.

"My own brother... he hates me... I wished to help him... He was drunk when I found him... Joseph and Anais went to Mrs. Kobetz and Anais told me to go to my brother... For I told her about Valerie, that she is my daughter... You know that story, about my wife and my son... But Valerie... She's my daughter..." Heimlich said and Vulkie gave a shocked face.

"Heim.... you... I didn't know that.... When I get my hands on Albert..." Vulkie said and slammed her fist on the table. Heim "shook" up a bit.

"Don't worry, I'm getting you out of here Heimlich... Don't you worry... Joseph'll help me..." Vulkie said and Heimlich replied with "I doubt it.."

Then, Heimlich quickly told the story, about how he entered the Hall of Records and found an adoption form filled in for Valerie, by Albert.

"As I said Heim, when I get my hands on Albert... He wished that he was never alive..." Vulkie replied. "But don't worry. Joseph isn't that kind of guy that get's really mad about this... Just be glad that Hoover didn't discover this..." Vulkie replied and Heimlich nodded.

Just then, the door opened and the bailiff entered. "Time's up." he said and Vulkie left Heimlich, going back to Heimlich's house.. "Try to call Joseph..." Vulkie said to Marc and Marc nodded and began to dial...

Molly sighed as Vulkie hurled herself out the door, narrowing her eyes.

"Well that's alright, just gallop of like a lone ranger." she called after her. "I expect a tumbleweed will fly by the window theatrically any minute now."

Rather disgruntled, she cast a glance at Marc, who wasn't paying attention, and poked at her midsection gingerly.

Yep, that confirmed it. Broken rib.

"Marc, you're sort of levelheaded, aren't you?" Molly asked, and he fixed her with a curious expression. "If I tell you something in complete confidence, you must swear to me now that you will make no mention of it to the others."

Marc seemed hesitant, but agreed.

"Last night, a thug was sent to my apartment. He had the gold statuette, the one from before...but anyway he was trying to warn me off the case. Well, warn everyone."

At this Marc realized the implications of what this meant, and demanded to know how badly she was hurt.

"Oh, me, I'm fine." she said, waving her conspicuously bandaged hand. "I was only wondering if their methods might give a clue as to the party involved. Oh well, I suppose thats sort of farfetched."

She shifted in her seat and gave a little grimace as pain shot through almost every conceivable part of her body.

"Things are getting more heated." she said glumly. "If they're this bad, this early on, I shudder to think what could happen when we near the Eye of God."

They lapsed into an uneasy silence, as they waited for Vulkie to return. She did, ordering Marc to call Joseph nearly as soon as she walked in. Molly used the excuse to get up and hobble stiffly into the kitchen, pouring herself one blessed cup of coffee.

~Earlier~

"Josèe?" Valerie whispered, "Do you think anyone is looking for us?"

Josèe twisted her head to look at Valerie. "Of course! Mummy and Daddy and Uncle Heimie and everybody will be!" came the forceful, whispered response. "Your dad, too," was said as an after thought.

"No, not my father. He doesn't love me," Valerie started to cry.

"Well, I love you. You're my big sister! I hafta love you. Maybe my daddy can love you, too. And my mummy will love you. Maybe you can live with Mummy and me!" Josèe rattled on.

"Don't you mean your Mummy and Daddy?" Valerie asked.

"Nope. I just met my daddy. My Mummy isn't really my mummy. She's my aunt! But her sister died when I was a baby and Mummy became my mummy! But I wish Mummy and Daddy would live together. Then it would be like a real family. The kind you read about in books!" Josèe explained.

"Your Mom died, too? I think that makes us double sisters. I miss my mom. She died a few years ago, and I miss her so so so much," fresh tears tracked down Valerie's face.

The girls sat in silence for a few minutes, cuddled together for warmth.

"Maybe we can help ourselves be found," Josèe broke the silence. "I think I might be able to undo those knots on you, if you can on me."

"Really?!" Valerie whispered excitedly.

"You try to undo mine first, ok?" Josèe half asked, half ordered Valerie.

"Ok," Valerie said and set to work. Ten minutes later, Josèe's hands were free.

"YES!" Josèe murrmered before quickly untieing her feet and then helping Valerie out of her bonds.

Together, the girls tiptoed to the door and listened.

"We have to give them something to eat, soon. They won't be any use starving, and you know it! Let me by!" a man spoke angrily voice growing louder as he neared the door.

The door slammed open, hitting Josèe and Valerie hard on the head and sentthem flying backward. "SMITH!" a voice yelled, "THEY UNTIED THEMSELVES!"

~Later~

Josèe and Valerie sat bound together with rope and heavy metal shackles on their wrists and ankles and dirty old socks stuffed into their mouths in the dark. Red handprints still stung their cheeks as tears ran silently down their faces. Someone removed the blindfold that had been placed on them for the transport to the new room.

Adults in heavy hooded garments walked in single file with candles as another adult was dragged in and thrown to the ground next to the girls.
