Heimlich VonVictor
Heimlich VonVictor
Vigilante

October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

"It sounds risky Vulkie, but I'll help you, for old times sake. You've done a lot for me and I've done a lot for you. But you'll owe me a bottle or 2 of some fine scotch!' Charlie said and I nodded.

"Right. As I said, the meeting is taking place at the docks. You both better not be late. As I said, noon tomorrow. Be at the docks and take some cover or stay in a car, I don't care. Just... Just help me out on this..." Vulkie said and Sergei and Charlie both nodded.

***The Meeting***

As Vulkie watched at her dad's pocket watch, it said she still had 5 minutes left. Vulkie was standing at the docks, smoking a cigarette and a briefcase next to her, with 100.000 dollars. Charlie stayed in a car, his gun ready and aiming at Vulkie,in case she was attacked. Sergei was hiding behind some boxes, just in case he could rush towards her.

"Where the hell he's staying..." Vulkie murmered and blowed some smoke away.

Just then, a small figure walked up to her and whispered : "Let's take a walk..."

Vulkie nodded, picked up the briefcase and she walked with the figure.

"Where's Eric? Is he alright? Is he still alive?' Vulkie asked, but the man didn't reply.

"I know what you're up to Vulkie. Your friends are here,I can smell them from a mile. But that's good, I don't care. I just want the money, that's all. Is it all there?" the figure said and asked, as he stopped and pointed to the briefcase.

"Yes" Vulkie replied and she opened the briefcase. It showed 100 dollar bills, all packed up nicely.

"Good. You can find your friend, Mr. Marvington, at the warehouse next to you." the man said and he picked up the briefcase.

"SERGEI, NOW!' Vulkie shouted and Sergei rushed towards her and the man. The man made a run for it, but Vulkie aimed her gun and shot him in his leg, making him fall down in the water. "Fish the basterd up. If he's lying about Eric, I'll torture him for eternity!" Vulkie shouted to Sergei and Sergei picked up a "fishing" pole and pulled...

The kidnapper was pulled up and Vulkie shouted to Charlie : "Look in the warehouse! Eric may be in life danger!"

Then, she looked at the kidnapper. "I hope for god's sake that he's in there, or else..." Vulkie said and the kidnapper laughed manically.

"You really don't know what's going on here, dont'cha?" the kidnapper taunted.

Vulkie looked,as Charlie got out of the warehouse with Eric. Eric was bleeding, heavily, and he was unconscious.

"My god..." Vulkie murmered and she rushed to Eric. "Eric,Eric! Can you hear me? Oh god... I'm.... I'm so sorry...." Vulkie said, but Eric didn't reply. He lost too many blood to be still conscious.

"Charlie, get him to a hospital, now!' Vulkie yelled and Charlie went off with Eric to the hospital.

As anger filled her body, she looked at the kidnapper, who looked terrified back.

"You have crossed a line too much. Kidnapping my ex-boyfriend is one thing, but torturing him and almost killing him is a line too far. He's still a friend..." Vulkie said and she aimed her gun.

"So, who are you working for?' Vulkie asked and the kidnapper laughed back at her and spat at her feet. "Not telling ya girl. But I can tell you this. City.." The kidnapper said and Vulkie shot the kidnapper, in the head.

"Why you do that for Vulkie. He was telling truth..." Sergei said.

"Hall..." Vulkie finished the kidnapper's sentence and then it struck to her.

Barnes, the "lost jewel", the Order of Socrates. They probably needed it badly. And Eric was connected to Barnes in one way or another. He could tell them anything about him.

"Sergei, I know who is behind this all, which faction. But still,I have to wait for..." Vulkie said and she sighed.

"I know Vulkie. But VonVictor,he's busy and something's troubling him. I could feel it,in here.." Sergei said, pointing at his own heart.

"Be a darling Sergei and pick up the kidnapper. I'll get the briefcase.." Vulkie said,as she 'scooped' the briefcase back in her hand...

***City Hall***

As Vulkie drove up towards the stairs leading to City Hall, Sergei sat in the back seat with the dead kidnapper.

"What we're doing here?' Sergei asked. Vulkie grinned. "We're going to deliver a message to our dearly beloved mayor Hollis, Sergei..." Vulkie said,as she smiled in the rear mirror, looking at Sergei.

The two detectives waited.... and waited.... and waited....

"There he is!" Sergei said and Vulkie looked out her window. "Indeed, there he is!" Vulkie shouted and ordered Sergei to "push" the body out of the car.

"Do it,now!" Vulkie said, as she started the engine of the car. The engine "roared", as Vulkie had her feet at the brake pedal and the gas pedal. It got Hollis's attention.

Vulkie lowered her car window, shouting to Hollis : "A message. Don't harm my friends, you bastard!"

Sergei opened the door, pushed the dead kidnapper out of the car and they drove of, speeding away.

"Get them, now!" Hollis shouted, as he looked astonished at the dead body.

And the chase began. From City Hall, past the Music teacher, past the Shoemaker, Vulkie and Sergei were being chased by "officials" from the Mayor.

"Damn, they're tough!" Vulkie said and she 'pushed' the pedal to the metal. The engine roared happily and it looked as if nothing came to her way. A car came from the right and Vulkie's car was spinning on the street, hitting a lantern pole.

"Sergei, you're alright?' Vulkie asked, but as she looked in the rear mirror, she saw Sergei lying unconscious.

"Damn!" Vulkie said and she started to "start" the engine again.

One time... second time.... third time... It wouldn't start. The officials came closer and closer, walking towards her.

Fourth time.... fifth time.... sixth.... seventh.....

At the eight time, the car started again and she sped off, leaving the officials far behind. But not did she know that they would catch up that soon...

****5th Avenue****

Vulkie yelled angrily at her steering wheel, as she manoeuvred her way through the traffic. The officials were gaining miles and miles, as she was carefully driving.

Just when she saw some free space, Vulkie decided to step on the gas. The engine roared and she steered swiftly through the traffic.

"You're not getting me, at least alive!' Vulkie yelled and she made her way past the DAB. "No,they won't help me. Neither won't LCN" Vulkie thought and she went towards a bridge, that was already opening.

Going 70 miles per hour, she was driving over the bridge, and nearly made the jump, leaving the officials behind.

"YAHOO!" Vulkie yelled and that seemed to wake Sergei up. "What happened? Last time I was conscious,we were spinning.." Sergei said and asked.

"Not now Sergei, I'll explain later" Vulkie said, as she drove towards her home. 3 blocks before her home, Sergei and Vulkie got out of the car and Vulkie "torched' it.

"Evidence, you know?" Vulkie said and Sergei nodded. "I understand" Sergei said. "Just ask Joseph for more info about my habit about cars. He can tell" Vulkie said, grinning as she reheard what she said.

"I'll phone you later Sergei. For now, I need to rest..." Vulkie said and Sergei nodded.

"I understand. It's been busy day" Sergei said and he went the other way, back towards his agency office.

Vulkie walked to her apartment, with the briefcase in her hand. As she opened the door, everything seemed alright. She placed the briefcase next to her bed, jumped on her bed and closed her eyes, only to be woken up by a phonecall...

"Mr. O' Leary, isn't it?" Molly asked politely, approaching the man. "We're dreadfully sorry for tying you up but it is something of a necessity. You see, we have a few questions that only YOU can answer."

Marc advanced threateningly. "And you better answer them, or else!"

"Quiet!" Molly snapped, and then smiled winningly at O' Leary. "Look, we're aware you have a friend, a Mr. Milton Kinsella."

Tim O'Leary immediately assumed a blank expression. "If you have questions for a Milton Kinsella, then why am I tied up to a chair?! Go find him instead!"

"As if we hadn't thought of that." Molly said irritably. "Your Mr. Kinsella is dead."

"Dead?" Tim O' Leary repeated, his mouth a perfect o.

"Oh, you didn't know? Yes, he fired upon a federal agent, a dear friend of Marc's over here. So I suggest you tell us all you know about the activities in that warehouse and just how you know Kinsella, and I'll keep him away from you." she said with another vulpine smirk.

***Vulkie's apartment***

"RIIIIIINNNNNG,RIIIIIINNNNG" the phone "said". Vulkie woke up slowly and looked around her. Everything was a bit woozy, but she managed to get to the living room and pick up the phone

"Vulkie here..." Vulkie said and waited for a reply

A few sniffs and a few sighs later, she heard Anais's voice.

"Vulkie... It's me,Anais... We haven't talked much lately..." Anais began and Vulkie sighed.

"4 years it has been, right?' Vulkie said and Anais grunted. "I was "away",yes... But now I'm back... Anyhow,I need your help..." Anais said and Vulkie sighed again.

"Anais, this day has been a hard day. I need some rest.. Goodbye..." Vulkie said, but Anais yelled : "Wait!"

"What's that imporant that I would want to wait. I've waited 4 years for a letter or a reply and now I need to wait..." Vulkie said, with arrogance in her voice.

"I... I made a phonecall to Joseph. But I got someone else on the line. He said that I had to meet "him" at Central Park. What do I do now?" Anais asked and waited for a reply.

"Try Joseph's again. I need my rest now Anais. Goodbye..." Vulkie said, but she felt terrible after what she had done when she hung up the phone.

Anais was her "best friend", together with Joseph and Heimlich.

Vulkie reminded her what the word "friend" meant. Partnership, support, helping eachother, trying to get situations solved out...

"I'll make it up to her tomorrow... If I have some free time..." Vulkie said. The next day (the 28th btw...), Vulkie would visit Eric. She "owed" him that... To protect him, no matter what happened...

"Dead?" Tim O' Leary repeated, his mouth a perfect o.

By now sweat was glistening on O'Leary's forehead. Marc and Molly could see it plainly.

"O'Leary.." Marc said then paused, "A source has informed me that you are a member of the Green Hand...a "big wig" if I do say so myself, now, tell me..what was your relation ship with Kinsella?"

"What's it ya?" He spat

"Kinsella was a Consiglier for The Order of Socrates. I know that you were placed in his faction while he was placed in there. Both of you unaware of each other at the time were spying on each other's factions. You both knew that you were going to die when you finished your job. I know that you two met each other and built a friendship-"

"If you know about our friendship then why did you ask about my relationship?!"

"Does it really matter?" Molly asked.

Marc circled around the chair in the dark.

"We know you were on to something big. What was it?" Marc asked.

"How should I know?"

"Oh I know that you know. And you're going to tell me. And If you don't, then you're not going to like me." Marc said.

"I already don't like you!"

"Then you're really going to hate me," Marc said with a chuckle.

"Okay look, I'll tell you what I know. Just...don't...hurt me. Kinsella and I became friends as you said. I was there the night he was shot. I saw the feds pull up in their vehicle. So I booked. Kinsella was on to something. There were about two or three other people there. We were hired by someone."

"Who hired you?" Molly asked.

"I don't know. I never met them."

"I didn't hear the gun shots. I was hoping Kinsella was going to get out alive."

"Who were the other two or three people?"

(Contin...)

"What's in it for me if I tell you?"

"You get to keep your head." Marc snapped, "Now tell me who they were!"

"There was an Irish man by the name of Tim Sullivan, an Italian named Leo Ataviano, and an American by the name of Joe Davis. Talk to them, they'll know who it was that hired them."

"Now see? That wasn't so hard now was it?" Molly said with a smile.

The two detectives left. Pierce was waiting for them at the car. They got in and left.

Two miles down the road Marc said, "Pierce pull over here. I need to use the pay phone."

Pierce pulled over and Marc got out and walked up to the phone booth and dialed Joseph's number.

After four rings, Joseph answered. "Hello?" he greeted sounding as though he was awoken from a good night's sleep.

"Joseph, it's Marc-"

"Marc, I can't talk on this line! Meet me in town at the barber's. I'll be there in about five mintues."

There was a click as he hung up.

Marc got back in the car. "Pierce. I got to get to the barber. Can you take me there?"

Pierce nodded and drove them in to town. He pulled up at the barber shop. Marc got out and was followed by Molly. They walked into the alley way where Joseph was waiting.

"What'd you find out.?" He asked.

"There were more people there the night Kinsella was shot. Three. Tim Sullivan; and Irish man, Leo Ataviano; an Italian, and Joe Davis; an American. If you go after Tim Sullivan, I can get Ataviano. We can go get Davis together."

Joseph nodded. As they were about to leave, a figure stepped around the corner. The three detectives pulled out their pistols and aimed them at the figure.

"Don't move! Hand's in the air!" Joseph yelled.

"Put you're hands up!" Marc said after the mand didn't reply.

All they could see was his outline. The man was too large to be Pierce, their driver.

The man lauged even louder and stopped.

He stepped into the street light with his back facing everyone. He spun around pulling his own gun out.

"Oh joy." Molly said under her breath when Marc announced they would be meeting Joseph. She followed him into the alleyway, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up as she assessed the dim location. Nervously she paced in a tight half-circle as Marc explained all the events of the evening, drawing closer to the alleymouth as she did so.

"Don't move! Put your hands in the air!" Joseph started, and Molly frowned, wondering what in the hell he was yelling at her for, before she turned her head and realized there was a giant monolith of a man only a few feet away from her.

"Oh, hellfire." she said, reaching for her weapon as he pulled a gun out and spun around.

Reflexively she leaped to the side, just as a brick where her head had been exploded in a cloud of red dust.

"Ack!" she squawked, narrowly avoiding another.

"Would someone please just shoot him?!" she shrieked, hurling herself across the alleymouth as another clipped her sleeve. She was moving to quickly to be able to use her gun effectively.

*Half an hour before the meeting in the alley*

Zeo called Vulkie after talking to Heimlich over his new phone line. Vulkie sound exhausted and informed Zeo that she just got home from her visit at the hospital. "Hospital? What's wrong?" Zeo inquired. Vulkie then went on to tell him everything. Zeo listen intently to Vulkie's description of the previous day's event, about the kidnapping, the money and the chase by the OS group.

"This is very peculiar." Zeo said as he lit up a Chesterfield, "The Order, again. They're up to something, definitely... but the Order is not short of money, why would they want a ransom, from you of all people, and did they kidnapped Eric just for a ransom?"

Vulkie was on the verge of tears. "Eric is still unconscious right now, so I didn't know what they were asking him. They really beat him to a pulp!"

Zeo could hear sobbing over the phone. The man tried to comfort his friend but his consolation vocabulary was worse than poor. Just then, his other phone rang. The one that was tabbed and sometimes taken over. "Vulkie. I must go now. You rest well tonight. Let's meet up tomorrow. Either Heimlich or myself will call you." He hung up immediately and stared at his other phone.

After four rings, Joseph picked up, "Hello?" he fringed tiredness as if he was being awoken.

"Joseph, it's Marc-"

"Marc, I can't talk right now. Meet me in town at the barber's. I'll be there in about five mintues."
((Note: Zeo would never say 'I cannot talk on this line' knowing full well the line was tabbed. He would not call right out the location of their meeting either (probably 'the place where we last met' would've been more appropriate), but i'll have to let that one slip this time since the story was well underway))

Zeo hung up immediately and drove to the barber. He just hoped no one was listening in.
