Heimlich VonVictor

October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

Earlier...

Brrrrring! Brrrrring! Brrrrring!

Heimlich's head pounded in time to the ringing of the phone. Groaning, he reached out for it. He didn't want to talk to anyone or do anything. Except get the damn phone to stop ringing. He picked it up, and dropped it back in the cradle.

"Ah, peace and quite," he muttered, wincing at the sound of his own voice.

A minute later, the phone started ringing again.

Brrrrring! Brrrrring! Brrrrring! Brrrrring! Brrrrring! Brrrr-

Heimlich muttered a curse before he grabbed the phone up, and mumbled "Heimlich VonVictor here. You better have a good reason for calling."

There was a pause on the other end. Then, a quite, feminine voice, drifted through the phone. "Heimlich? Are you ok?"

The voice sounded familiar. Distantly familiar, but he couldn't place it. "Who is this?" he inquired, wincing as he sat all the way up and the setting sun shone directly into his eyes.

"I'm not surprised you don't remember, Heimlich. Maybe this will help jog your memory," the voice held a gentle humor, and Heim could hear the phone being passed to someone, and the same woman whispering something to some one else.

"Uncle Heimie? Hi! Guess what? Mummy and I are back in New York! And I met my daddy! But he's off doing work for awhile, so he can't spend time with me. He looked so funny when he saw me! And he was mad at Mum. But he was happy to see her too! Of course, I know that Mummy isn't really my mum," Josèe Nin rattled off, speaking a mile a minute, much too fast for Heimlich to process.

There was more noise at the receiver again changed hands. Heimlich spoke before either of the women could. "Anais? Is it really you? And Josèe? Back in New York?"

"Yes, it is! I figured I couldn't put off Josèe meeting her father any longer. Plus, she is old enough to know some stuff now, and she will be going off to boarding school soon enough. Miss Parr has given me some good recommendations." Anais leaned against the counter, smoothing Josèe's hair back as she chatted. "We wou

"We would both like to see you while we are here, Heim. I would say that I would see you tomorrow at Vulkie's party, but, I don't trust anyone here in New York to babysit except for people who are going to be at the party. And, well... an eight year-old at a birthday party where everyone will be getting drunk and smoking and talking about the past? I don't think that would be the best idea."

There was silence on Heimlich's end.

"Heimlich? You there?"

"Yeah, sorry, Anais. I'm a bit out of it right now. Would you like to meet at the Boardwalk the day after tomorrow?" He asked, still not thinking entirely straight.

"Sure! We can catch up then. I'll let you go now, Heimlich. But first Josèe wants to say something," Anais smiled down at her little girl, who imperiously held her hand out for the phone.

"Bye-bye Uncle Heimie! I can't wait to see you!" the little girl exclaimed.

Heimlich winced, holding the phone well away fro his ear, before gingerly speaking into it to Josèe, "It was wonderful to hear from you and your mom tonight, Josèe. I've missed bouncing you on my knee!"

"Uncle Heimie, you are a silly goose," she informed him, with all the confidence of being eight years old. "Bye!"

The receiver clicked as Josèe hung up, and Heimlich lay back down to finish sleeping off the effects of the alcohol on his body.

"Heimlich, you lied to me. You lied against me! And I'm supposed to be your friend?" Vulkie said,as the conversation started and heated up.

"Well, look for yourself, traitor!" Heimlich replied. "Don't you think that I already "forgot" your betrayal at the Craig-Case... I still don't understand why you eventually went with those mobsters.." Heimlich added and he sighed.

"That's my bloody business. But you lied to me,about Albert. He's your..." Vulkie said,as Molly stumbled in and dropped her glass of champagne on Vulkie's dress.

"Sorry dear, you know, you really shouldn't stand that close to a door.." Molly said and Vulkie took a towel and began to "dry " her dress a bit up.

Just then,Charlie and Marc came in. "It's rude to leave your guests there, you know that?" Charlie said.

"Just tell them Heim!" Vulkie said.

"Sorry" Heimlich said. "Vulkie and I were discussing a fib... and a possible case..." Heimlich said.

"A case? Sounds interesting,I'm in.." Marc said and the conversation developed, but Heimlich refused to explain.

"I... I can't do this.. I need some fresh air,please..." Heimlich said. "I also have a meeting today. I... I've got to go. Goodbye guys..." Heimlich said and he rushed out of Vulkie's apartment.

"Strange..." Vulkie said and everyone nodded. "It's nothing for Heimlich to act like that. Well, the party must go on eh? Let's go to the living room people!" Vulkie said cheerful and pushed everyone out of the kitchen.

"Where did VonVictor go?' Sergei asked. "Business appointment I presume..." Charlie said and Sergei smiled. "Good. Business has been slow for VonVictor. He don't have that much cases,as Eric and I are doing most of them.." Sergei said.

"Why did Sergei had to bring up Eric Marvington?" Vulkie thought and she sighed. "What's wrong?" Marc asked.

"Nothing.." Vulkie said and faked a smile,as the party went on...

Molly flitted around the room easily, joking around and sometimes flirting with the various party-goers. She had been quite the socialite in her "past life", and she knew how to work a room. But her mind kept returning to Heimlich. Although they had worked well together in a team, she didn't know much about his background. It was not something he seemed eager to discuss.

One of the detectives she did not recognize asked her to dance, and so she did, whirling and laughing at the smart quips the detective made. But in her mind, she was still dissecting the Heimlich problem; was it best handled by letting him work it out on his own, or should she step in? At the very least let him know that she was willing to help him out with anything he needed...

The detective spun her out and she was promptly caught up by Marc. She grinned.

"I didn't take you for a dancing man." she said playfully, then lowered her voice. "What's your take on Heimlich? Does it seem like something he needs our help with or not?"

Marc opened his mouth to answer but was interrupted as Vulkie, seeming at least slightly intoxicated, cut in to have a dance with her detective friend. Noticing the eyes of the party on the little scene, Molly clasped a hand over her heart and made a sad expression, and another friend of Vulkie's immediately appeared to to swoop her up in a lively number. She laughed gaily, but was making lists of the possible ways she could get in contact with Heim, and in turn get to the root of the problem.

"Mummy? Is today when we see Uncle Heimie? And when do we see Aunt Vulkie? And when can I see my daddy? Can we go to Central Park later? And the
Natural History Museum? Ooooh! And can we go to a baseball game?" Josèe pelted questions at Anais, excited about life, a happy child.

Anais lowered her book to peer at Josèe. "No, we see Uncle Heimie tomorrow, and Aunt Vulkie the day after. Daddy is busy with work, and I'm not sure when we will see him. Yes, we can go to Central Park, and the museum, and I'm not sure about a baseball game, dear."

Josèe hopped up onto the couch to settle in next to her mum. "Wha'ca reading?"

"A mystery book, dear. Where is your book that you are supposed to be reading for your report?"

Josèe pouted. "In my room. But I don't like it! I don't care about Rome!"

"Do you want to read Little Women together then?" Anais asked, patiently setting down the newest Agatha Christie novel she had grabbed before they left London.

"You'll read and then I'll read?" Josèe's eyes lit up.

"Yes, that is what I mean. Let me go get it."

Just as Anais stood, someone knocked at the door.

Anais, instantly alert, spoke softly. "Josèe? Get ba-"

"Go to the bedroom and hide, I know, mum," Josèe finished, not as quietly as Anais would have like, but quite nonetheless as she darted to give Anais a big hug and then to the back bedroom.

Anais made her way slowly to the door, and peered through the peephole. Seeing who it was, she un bolted the door and removed the chain. Opening the door a little, she exclaimed softly, "What in the world are you doing here?!" as she pulled the visitor inside, before locking up again.

"What? No hello?"

Anais turned with a grin. "Of course you get a hello. Hello! I just wasn't expecting you!" and with that, she gave her friend a big hug.

Something didn't seem right to Marc after Heimlich left. He pulled out his pocket watch and looked at the time. It was getting late. So he announced to everyone that he should get going and he left after saying good bye to everyone.

He made his way back to his appartment and took a shower. After cleaning up, he went into his study where he often felt safe and secure. He knew something was troubling his old friend Heimlich. But what was it?

He didn't know. Marc reached into his cabinet and pulled out a bottle of scotch and poured a about three fingers and downed it. The alcohol burned his throat as it was swallowed.

Marc fell asleep. It was the best sleep he had in a long time. Then he was awoken by a knock on his door.

Molly sailed away unseen from Le Petit Jardin, a small smirk on her face. She had slipped away from Vulkie's party after securing some names she needed to know from casual conversation. Then she had instructed Pierce, the new "butler" (he was really a bodyguard) she had hired to get ahold of Mr. Joe Derringer and arrange a meeting. Molly was fond of Pierce, he was very intelligent and seemed to like her well enough. He was also quite the expert gunman, and as Molly had learned when she encountered Billings and the entire organization behind him, she needed a trusted friend and a true shot at her back.

Accordingly, she had placed a note inside an envelope, which read "Heimlich Von Victor, Albert Von Victor. Find me all pertinent information connecting them, it'll be an extra $100 if you keep this all extremely hush-hush."

Joe Derringer was harmless, she had thought to herself as she had stealthily walked in and deposited the envelope, her favorite perfume scenting the air as she slipped away. He had a reputation for knowing people, and he had no connection to her whatsoever. He could find her the information, and Molly could assess if it was a good idea for her to intercede without anyone being the wiser.

"Come on, Pierce. Would you refuse a sandwich? Its a lovely afternoon; I have the perfect cafe in mind." she asked, and he smiled at her before his dark eyes slid seamlessly over the street, doors and windows. Molly smiled and led the way, confident at this new addition.

((sorry ahead of time on the long post. need to get myself back into the current story))

Zeo spent another evening staring at an empty warehouse, missing Vulkie's birthday party, and wondered when this would all end. Trapped in their nondescript stake out van, he cursed his director loudly, seeing that his other two partners Stein and Greenberg were asleep and couldn't hear him. Everyone knew that this stake out was a joke, and was taking it lightly.

Zeo's thoughts drifted to Josèe, whom he just discovered was his daughter the day before Hoover assigned him to this case-- A daughter, by his deceased girlfriend Lizette, who was also Anais' sister. How dare the women to hide the fact from him all these years? Zeo never wanted a child, given he never had a good childhood himself. Nevertheless, Josèe was real, and he just had to live with the fact that he was now a father.

The stake out was the perfect excuse for Zeo to not face his little girl, but the more he was apart from her, the more he wanted to get to know her. Already, he knew that Josèe took after her mother and aunt in terms of character"all three ladies could TALK, non-stop. What else? Was she as curious as he was as a child? What did she like to eat? Did she like sports? Zeo would love to take Josèe out to a Yankees game. As a little boy his only wish was to have his father take him to a baseball match; of course it never materialized. Zeo didn't want the same regret for his daughter. May he could take her to see the Yankees. Perhaps with the strong line up this year, the Yank would finally have their big break…

Suddenly there was a dim blue glow in one of the warehouse window. Zeo rubbed his eyes and looked again. "Wake up!" Zeo hissed. Stein and Greenberg stirred.

"Is it morning already?" Greenberg replied lazily.

"No, look!" Zeo pointed at the warehouse window, but the blue glow was already gone. "I was certain there was a light over there a moment ago. A blue one." Stein laughed.

"Zeo, you're staring at the warehouse for too long. We all know Hoover's got the wrong source this time…" the agent trailed off and starred at the warehouse dumbly. Zeo could see an orange glow reflected off Stein's face. He turned around to look at the building, only to see it lighting up in flames.

The agents got out of the van. The warehouse was burning bright, but they saw no one coming out of it. Something was wrong. Warehouses just don't burn by themselves… but who set it on fire? For days they had surveyed the surroundings, and no one had ever come in or out of the building…

Zeo ran for the entrance.

"Joseph, what the heck you think you're doing? It's a burning building for crying out loud!" Stein yelled. Zeo ignored him, kicked open the door and entered.

In the orange glow, Zeo could see that the warehouse in fact wasn't empty as it appeared from the outside. There were furniture away from the view of the windows, and empty crates lying all over the place as if someone had cleared it out in a hurry. The fire was gobbling up the wooden boxes like a starving wrestler. Zeo didn't have much time.

The flames were hissing loudly as he ran around the stairways and found a half closed door. He opened it. Yes, a passage leading DOWN. What if it was a mere basement and led nowhere? He would be trapped in this building for good and probably burn to death. Josèe's face suddenly appeared in his mind, but he tried to wipe it out. Before he knew it, Zeo was striding down the steps two at a time. He didn't even have time to call himself crazy.

The dimly lit hallway stretched on for over 30 yards. The sound of the burning building above was getting dimmer by each stride. Zeo knew that he had hit the jackpot. No wonder why there had seen no activities outside the warehouse. The crooks had been using this passageway to get in and out of their lair. Zeo ran on, wondering where this passage would lead him…

He took a turn and suddenly heard a gunshot;
