"Brrrrrr, it's chilly outside", Makensie said to herself, as she shut the front door of her house.

It was the night before Halloween. Cody and her had carved pumpkins, and against her better judgement, listened to ghost stories on the local radio show. She knows she will be up half the night now, because Cody will be so spooked, he won't be able to sleep.

"When is Daddy coming, Mommy?", Cody asked, curled up beside her.

"He should be getting here soon. More pumpkins for YOU to carve", she said, smiling at her son.

Claudia, the housekeeper/nanny, walked in and said, "I'm retiring to my bedroom, Makensie. You have a nice night"

"You too, Claudia!", Makensie said.

Cody began coloring, as Makensie walked in the kitchen to fix them both some hot chocolate. In fact, she decided to make enough for Clift too.

As she was fixing that, she could hear Cody humming some song his Dad taught him.

She smiled, and put some water on to boil.

Georgio, her bodyguard/driver had left an hour earlier, something about a hot date. Men!, she thought.

Carlos was gone again, on one of his business trips. She was too scared to ask what he really did for work, but knew that she has to ask one day, if she is going to make a life with him.

She still had feelings for Clift, but she thinks she always would. Just right now, they just couldn't get it together. Cody always was wishing that his father and I would get together, so we could be one big happy family.

As she was lost in her own thoughts, she heard a creak sound, then a thump. Or was that a door slam?

She looked out into the living room, and noticed that Cody wasn't there.

He must've went upstairs to go bathroom, she thought.

The water came to a boil, so she grabbed some cups for her, Cody, and Clift.

She thought it odd that Cody would be taking this long. She didn't know why she found it odd. Any other time, she'd think nothing of it.

They didn't know where they were going, but, they thought they would start at the bar, even though they had no idea on what to ask, or who to look for.

"Theodore King", Makensie said.

Clift looked at her, as he was driving, and said, "What?"

"Theodore King. He was a sick, dangerous man. He stalked me for a long time. Was infatuated with me. In a sick way", Makensie said, remembering back.

Slamming the wheel with his hand, Clift said, "dDammit Makensie, why in the hell didnt you ever tell me this?"

"Well, I didnt think it was a big deal. I thought it was over with, Clift!:, Makensie said.

"I'd have never left you and Cody alone, had I known this", Clift said. He always feltguity because he knew that he's never been around much, due to his new career.

Makensie knew he always beat himself up over it, and she said, "Quit blaming yourself. I know that is what you are going to do. I didn't know that this slime ball was out, or Id have took precautions. God, I wish Id have been the one to answer that door"

"Do you know of anyone who would know anything about this idiot? I swear, Makensie, if he hurts our child...I will kill him!", Clift said, dead serious.

Makensie knew that he would, and if he didn't, she would do it herself.

"Go to the Tricky Mister. I'm sure Cyrus could tell us where he's been staying at", makensie said.

Speeding up, Clift said, "Lets do it"

Makensie also thought of a detective who knew all the places where scum bags hung at. He was a professional detective but that was his tactic he used to get what he wanted....the shady look.

Joey Bane. He has helped her more than once, and she knew he would help her again, especially when it involved a child. HER child.

"Weel, why do you think I'D know where this Teddy King, or whoever he is, would be? Gee Mak, I thought you liked me better than that, doll", Joey was saying, as he sat at the same table in the corner, smoking a cigarette, and having a drink.

Makensie knew that Joey knew of Theodore, she could tell by the change of expression when she mentioned the name.

Sitting down across from him, Joey could see the bloodshot eyes from her crying, and the stress and worry that was behind them, as she said, "Joey. Please. I'm begging you for your help. I know that you atleast know OF him. Point us in the right direction. Please"

Clift was growing impatient, and really, he never cared for Joey Bane, and that feeling was mutual.

"Come on, Makensie, we are wasting time here. We need answers", Clift was saying, as he grabbed her arm to lead her out.

Joey held his hand up, and said, "Ok ok ok. Hold up a minute. About 4 days ago, I was in here, and I THOUGHT I saw the guy in here, but, I was assuming he was still locked up so, I just figured it was someone who looked like him. If Id have known it was him, I'd have gave you a shout"

"How would you know....", Makensie was saying, as JOey, again, held his hand up.

"Sorry, was just being a wise guy. Look, I can't say for SURE but, I do believe he is staying, or was staying anyway, in those cruddy apartments above the shoe shop. That's all I can tell you. Maybe you can ask around there, and see if any of the neighbors can help you. Good luck with THAT though", Joey said, shrugging.

Makensie thanked him, as Clift just gave him a look. Joey looked at him, and said, dryly, "Break a leg"

Joey took a long sip of his drink, knowing that he would help Makensie, but it would be for her only. Not Clift Garret.

Walking outside, Clift said, "You actually trust that guy? I've never trusted him ever since I met him on that cruise"

"Joey is alright, Clift. Quit being so paranoid. I get along with him just fine", she said.

Clift grumbled, saying, "Yeah, there is no doubt"

They headed in the direction of the shoe shop.

Across the street, in a rusty old beat up truck, he watched them.

Laughing quietly, he said, "Look at them go. Rats in a maze"

The boy was in the back seat, still tied, and still taped over the mouth.

Watching toward the bar, he growled lowly. Joey Bane. He despised him. He forgot that he was a detective friend of Makensie. Before Joey could notice, he started his truck, and slowly drove off.

Spotting Makensie, and that Clift Garret, he pulled over again. Watching. Thinking of what his next step will be.

"This is so fun", he said, with a crazed look in his eye, and a thirst like he's never had before, for the lovely Makensie Brewer.
