"Brrrrrr, it's chilly outside", Makensie said to herself, as she shut the front door of her house.

It was the night before Halloween. Cody and her had carved pumpkins, and against her better judgement, listened to ghost stories on the local radio show. She knows she will be up half the night now, because Cody will be so spooked, he won't be able to sleep.

"When is Daddy coming, Mommy?", Cody asked, curled up beside her.

"He should be getting here soon. More pumpkins for YOU to carve", she said, smiling at her son.

Claudia, the housekeeper/nanny, walked in and said, "I'm retiring to my bedroom, Makensie. You have a nice night"

"You too, Claudia!", Makensie said.

Cody began coloring, as Makensie walked in the kitchen to fix them both some hot chocolate. In fact, she decided to make enough for Clift too.

As she was fixing that, she could hear Cody humming some song his Dad taught him.

She smiled, and put some water on to boil.

Georgio, her bodyguard/driver had left an hour earlier, something about a hot date. Men!, she thought.

Carlos was gone again, on one of his business trips. She was too scared to ask what he really did for work, but knew that she has to ask one day, if she is going to make a life with him.

She still had feelings for Clift, but she thinks she always would. Just right now, they just couldn't get it together. Cody always was wishing that his father and I would get together, so we could be one big happy family.

As she was lost in her own thoughts, she heard a creak sound, then a thump. Or was that a door slam?

She looked out into the living room, and noticed that Cody wasn't there.

He must've went upstairs to go bathroom, she thought.

The water came to a boil, so she grabbed some cups for her, Cody, and Clift.

She thought it odd that Cody would be taking this long. She didn't know why she found it odd. Any other time, she'd think nothing of it.

Those stupid ghost stories, she thought, and she chuckled.

Walking into the living room, she looked toward the stairs, and yelled, "Cody!"

When she received no answer, she yelled a little louder, "CODY!"

Claudia comes walking down, throwing her robe on, saying, "What on EARTH?"

Makensie put her hands on her hips, and said, "What is Cody James doing? He's been up there forever, and he isn't answering me when I call for him"

Claudia looked confused, saying, "Cody? Makensie, he didn't come up here. He has to pass my bedroom to get to his bedroom, and the bathroom, and my door has been opened the whole time. He didnt come up here"

"...but....but...he has to be Claudia! Maybe you just weren't paying attention!", Makensie said, getting a little scared.

Claudia could hear the panic in Makensie's voice, and said, "Now just calm down. Maybe you're right. I might not have been paying attention. Let me go back up and look"

As she did that, Makensie walked to where Cody had been coloring, and saw the paper he had been coloring on was missing.

She looked to the front door, then saw it laying on the floor. Walking toward it, she also noticed the door slightly ajar.

She opened the door, letting the cold air come in, but Makensie was going into a state of shock, when she realized that her son was actually missing. That someone must've thumped on the door, which is what she heard, Cody went to the door, and that is when he was snatched.

At the same time she was realizing this, Claudia was running down the stairs saying, "He isn't up here"

Any other time, Makensie Brewer would've stayed cool, calm and collected because that is what she did, and that is whats made her a good detective...but this wasn't any other time. This was happening to HER son...HER blood.

She walked out in the cold, with nothing but a thin nightgown on, looked around in the darkened yard, through the trees, as they blew in the wind, and as it began to rain, she just fell to the ground, on her knees, and screamed at the top of her lungs, "COOOODDDDDYYYYYYYYYY!!!"

Meanwhile, Clift was pulling up, and was excited about spending the evening with his son, and even Makensie.

He noticed the front door open, and Makensie kneeled on the ground, as Claudia was running up behind her.

"What is going on?", he thought out loud.

He got out of the car, and ran to Makensie.

Grabbing her by the shoulders, and lifting her to her feet, he looked at her tear covered face, and said, "What is wrong?"

"Cody....", was all she could get out, before busting out in a fit of sobs.

Getting nervous, Clift shook Makensie a bit, to try to get her to calm down, as he said, WHAT ABOUT CODY??"

Claudia knew that Makensie could never explain it, so she decided to tell him all that happened.

Clift had walked Makensie inside in the meantime, saying, "I can't believe this is happening. My own son! Where in the hell were you at, for this to happen!!"

"I was HERE! IN the house, Clift! Making hot chocolate for US! Cody was coloring. I didnt realize that someone would come knocking on the door, and take our son! If only I'd have realized that the thump I heard was someone at the door. It should've been me who answered that door", Makensie said, shivering from her wet gown.

"Claudia, take her upstairs, and get her some fresh clothes on. She has to get focused. This is our son, and he needs us", Clift said, brushing his hand through his hair.

Makensie was saying, "I'm so scared"

Clift gave her a close, quick hug, and said, "I am too...but, we have to hold it together"

For the first time, she saw fear in Clift's eyes, and for the first time, neither one knew where to go first, or what to do.

In the meantime, outside the house, in the cold evening of Halloween Eve, in the dead of night, he watched them all running around frantically. He watched, especially, Makensie Brewer. He smiled, with evil. He loved seeing the panic in people, the confusion of not knowing what to do. Makensie was so pretty when she was scared. So vulnerable. He never knew how vulnerable she really could be. His breathing was unsteady, sounding like a wild animal, his heart racing at just the thought of what he was going to do when he got is hands on her.

Then he looked Clift Garret. He wasn't intending on HIM showing up. "I could've had her tonight, if HE wouldn't have come along", he said, to the wind. "You always have to mess things up, dont you?", he said, with a growl. Then, he smiled, and thought, "That's ok. I will take care of you. Then your precious Makensie, will be all mine"

He looked at the scared little boy, all tied up with tape across his mouth. He had no intentions of hurting the child, he was just using him as bait, but, if he had to....he wasn't scared to kill anything or anyone"

"Hopefully, your Mommy is very cooperative. Your life depends on it", he said, laughing.

Back inside the house, Makensie was changed into warm clothes, and both Clift, and her rushed out into his car, to try to get help in this, as this was hitting too close for comfort, and they needed an outside person to help with the details. Clift kn ew that Makensie wasn't going to be real sharp, and rightfully so, since it was her son, and he wasn't going to be much better but, he knew that if anything happened to Cody...Makensie Brewer would never be the same.

"Where are we going?", Makensie said.

"I have an idea. Just be quiet right now, and let me think", Clift said, in deep, deep thought, as he sped down the road.

Claudia had phoned Georgio, and he came there, to look around the premises, while Makensie and Clift were away.

They didn't know where they were going, but, they thought they would start at the bar, even though they had no idea on what to ask, or who to look for.

"Theodore King", Makensie said.

Clift looked at her, as he was driving, and said, "What?"

"Theodore King. He was a sick, dangerous man. He stalked me for a long time. Was infatuated with me. In a sick way", Makensie said, remembering back.

Slamming the wheel with his hand, Clift said, "dDammit Makensie, why in the hell didnt you ever tell me this?"

"Well, I didnt think it was a big deal. I thought it was over with, Clift!:, Makensie said.

"I'd have never left you and Cody alone, had I known this", Clift said. He always feltguity because he knew that he's never been around much, due to his new career.

Makensie knew he always beat himself up over it, and she said, "Quit blaming yourself. I know that is what you are going to do. I didn't know that this slime ball was out, or Id have took precautions. God, I wish Id have been the one to answer that door"

"Do you know of anyone who would know anything about this idiot? I swear, Makensie, if he hurts our child...I will kill him!", Clift said, dead serious.

Makensie knew that he would, and if he didn't, she would do it herself.

"Go to the Tricky Mister. I'm sure Cyrus could tell us where he's been staying at", makensie said.

Speeding up, Clift said, "Lets do it"

Makensie also thought of a detective who knew all the places where scum bags hung at. He was a professional detective but that was his tactic he used to get what he wanted....the shady look.

Joey Bane. He has helped her more than once, and she knew he would help her again, especially when it involved a child. HER child.

"Weel, why do you think I'D know where this Teddy King, or whoever he is, would be? Gee Mak, I thought you liked me better than that, doll", Joey was saying, as he sat at the same table in the corner, smoking a cigarette, and having a drink.

Makensie knew that Joey knew of Theodore, she could tell by the change of expression when she mentioned the name.

Sitting down across from him, Joey could see the bloodshot eyes from her crying, and the stress and worry that was behind them, as she said, "Joey. Please. I'm begging you for your help. I know that you atleast know OF him. Point us in the right direction. Please"

Clift was growing impatient, and really, he never cared for Joey Bane, and that feeling was mutual.

"Come on, Makensie, we are wasting time here. We need answers", Clift was saying, as he grabbed her arm to lead her out.

Joey held his hand up, and said, "Ok ok ok. Hold up a minute. About 4 days ago, I was in here, and I THOUGHT I saw the guy in here, but, I was assuming he was still locked up so, I just figured it was someone who looked like him. If Id have known it was him, I'd have gave you a shout"

"How would you know....", Makensie was saying, as JOey, again, held his hand up.

"Sorry, was just being a wise guy. Look, I can't say for SURE but, I do believe he is staying, or was staying anyway, in those cruddy apartments above the shoe shop. That's all I can tell you. Maybe you can ask around there, and see if any of the neighbors can help you. Good luck with THAT though", Joey said, shrugging.

Makensie thanked him, as Clift just gave him a look. Joey looked at him, and said, dryly, "Break a leg"

Joey took a long sip of his drink, knowing that he would help Makensie, but it would be for her only. Not Clift Garret.

Walking outside, Clift said, "You actually trust that guy? I've never trusted him ever since I met him on that cruise"

"Joey is alright, Clift. Quit being so paranoid. I get along with him just fine", she said.

Clift grumbled, saying, "Yeah, there is no doubt"

They headed in the direction of the shoe shop.

Across the street, in a rusty old beat up truck, he watched them.

Laughing quietly, he said, "Look at them go. Rats in a maze"

The boy was in the back seat, still tied, and still taped over the mouth.

Watching toward the bar, he growled lowly. Joey Bane. He despised him. He forgot that he was a detective friend of Makensie. Before Joey could notice, he started his truck, and slowly drove off.

Spotting Makensie, and that Clift Garret, he pulled over again. Watching. Thinking of what his next step will be.

"This is so fun", he said, with a crazed look in his eye, and a thirst like he's never had before, for the lovely Makensie Brewer.
