The legendary detective/prosecutor Heimlich Von Victor was forced to retire from his agency, when he snapped during an investigation into an opium smuggling operation, killing everyone involved, including an undercover officer along the way. Just as he was about to start writing his memoir, an anonymous phone call threatening to expose him forced the detective into defending Sergei Kobetz, a rouge alleged for the murder of two Russian refugees. Along with the help from his friends Vulkie and Joseph Zeo, as well as his former partner Eric Marvington, they managed to break Sergei out of jail and slowly reveal the conspiracy behind the frame up.

It turned out that Sergei's brother Leon Kobetz was the killer behind the deaths, and the puppeteer behind the Russian secret police, NKVD. Their aim was to cause havoc on American soil, and their last mission was the assassination of President Roosevelt. Heimlich along with his friends saved the president at the eleventh hour, and Sergei Kobetz was exonerated by President Roosevelt himself.

It should have been good enough for anyone else, but not Eric Marvington. Vladmir Bjarkhov, a witness he had interrogated, had confessed that he was in on the conspiracy due to his daughter being kidnapped. Eric promised Vladmir that he would protect him and return his daughter to safety, but six minutes later, Vladmir was killed by a car bomb meant for Eric. He had focused on the investigation, but Yelena Bjarkhov was always on his mind. Now that the President was safe, Leon Kobetz and Natasha Kozerskaia were in jail, and everything was resolved, except for one loose thread.

“Detectives,” Eric began to the room full of people, “I have asked you here because we are attempting to track down a missing person by the name of Yelena Bjarkhov. She was kidnapped and held as collateral in a recent murder investigation. My theory is that there is a still an NKVD agent trapped in the United States and may wish to use her as a bargaining chip to get out. She may be with her mother, Svetlana, but we don’t have any hard evidence of that. Her father was approximately forty years old, which wouldn’t be much to go on, but sources around the neighborhood place her between eight and ten years of age.”

He produced a photograph of her parents and hung it up on the board behind him. “This is the only photo recovered from the Bjarkhov’s apartment. There are no photographs of Yelena. I’ve called you all here, because I’ve heard good things about you, some of you are seasoned detectives, others are just starting out, but you all have skills that will be vital to this investigation. I’m counting on you to find her. Do we have any questions?” Eric asked.

"Yes, I have a couple as well. Obviously this Yelena doesn't have ties to the NKVD herself, so is it her father or her mother that might be associated in some way with the kidnapper?"

Molly consulted the notes she had furiously taken while Eric Marvington was speaking.

"Either it was a completely random occurence...unlikely," Molly said dryly, brushing a strand of copper hair from a still-healing slash over her eye, "or either Mr. or Mrs. Bjarkhov are big enough fish that a statement like this would matter to the people in charge. I think we need to find out more about these two, and the people they rubbed elbows with."

Eric nodded. "Indeed Ms... Maltese?" he said looking at his sheet, "The Bjarkhovs were Soviet refugees. A man by the name of Leon Kobetz, the head of the NKVD, tracked them down and informed them that they would spare them if they would give statements against his brother, Sergei Kobetz. I think it's an excellent idea to canvas the building and speak with the other residents. It's a very Russian are and we're bound to turn up something."

Then shifting his eyes to the young man with his hand held sheepishly in the air, Eric smiled. "Yes Kyle? What is your question?"

"Are there any other questions?" Eric asked.

Marc stood up from his chair in the shadows. "I have some questions. Who exactly is the NKVD agent that may be trapped here in the U.S? And why is Yelena Bjarkhov so important to this agent? It's not making any since to me."

He looked down at the notes he had written down when the meeting started. Eric looked at Marc and opened his mouth reply when he was cut off by Marc again, asking another question.

"Even though thre are no photos of Yelena, is there other evidence that was found that could give us some kind of lead?" Marc asked.
