Things don't always go as you would want them to go. I looked at the dead body of 26 year old Carol Fisher. She had been mutilated by someone. Stabbed a total of seven times and then shot once in the head. The local police knew who the killer was. The problem was finding him. They had a name. They had proof. They had physical evidence that linked him to the crime and witness evidence. It was enough evidence to put him a way for life.
I was worned that he is a master of disguises. He can disapper with the blink-of-an-eye.
Detective Thomas McDonald looked at me when I was finished examining the body. "I heard about your reputation around here."
"What about it?" I asked
"If you can catch our killer, Charles Craig, I can promise a handsome reward." he replied.
I thought about it. Money. I needed money real bad. I was behind on rent for both my apartment and my office. Money is good.
"Fine. I'll take it," I said and I left back for my office. I reviewed the background and case file of Mr. Craig. This wasn't going to be easy, that was for sure. I decided to make a phone call to a few friends of mine to see if they would be interested in making some decent money in helping to find a killer who could blend in to even the smaller crowds.
It was dark and there was nothing I could do for the night. I'd have to start in the morning. So I went home for the night to get some sleep. The next morning, went to my office to make a call to a few friends to see if they'd be interested in making a few dollars in helping to find this killer.
I lay in my bed, alone in my room. I was wating for Vulkie, or Charlie, or someone from the crew to come see me with what information they had. I hated being unable to move around. I knew I was going to have a hard time after I got out. But thankfully, the bullet hit no vital organs.
Downt the hall, I could hear some body screaming and swearing at the doctors and nurses. It was a woman and it made me laugh inside. I was starting to doze off when my door slammed open and in rushed an older man.
"Marc! Oh my.........what happend to you?"
I looked at the older man and then I realized who it was; Mr. Heimlich VonVictor. A friend whom I had not seen since I helped catch Mr. and Mrs. Louson.
"Heimlich. Boy am I glad to see you?" I said with a chuckle.
"What happend?!" He said.
"I got shot-"
"Couple of gangsters. With out Vulkie, I-"
"Vulkie? She's here?"
"Well, not exactly. She and another detective, Charlie Cain, went to go get some information on a case that we're working on."
Heimlich sat down in the chair and asked "Care to explain?"
I told him everything. About the murder of a woman, evidence pointing to Charles Craig, how he can blend into a crowd, the murder of his sister and mother, and my newest bit; his appartment here in the lower east side of Manhattan. I told him about my luck with Charles hiding in a crowd and me pulling the wrong guy down. Then Vulkie and Charlie Cain came up and I got shot.
"Where did the bullets hit? Are you going to be okay?" He said.
"I'll be fine. The first bullet hit me in the back, above the shoulder missing my spinal column and left lung by just a few short millimeters." I said
"You, my friend, are a lucky man." Heimlich responded.
I nodded. "I get out tomorrow morning ," I said.
"Yes. I yelled at the doc and told him to release me now or I'm walking out tonight." I said.
Heimlich chuckled. "Boy, oh boy. Any idea when Vulkie and Charlie will be back?"
"Not a clue."
"There, all done. I bet you feel embarassed, all that fuss for nothing!" a new nurse said, checking the sutures she had put on Molly's eye. Two male nurses hovered nearby, as if afraid Molly might clock the lady at any second.
"No, I don't feel embarassed at all." Molly muttered darkly, standing up slowly. "You lot should feel embarassed about hiring a witch like that in the first place."
The nurse simply patted Molly's shoulder absentmindedly. "Would you like a...er...eyepatch?" she asked kindly. Molly shook her head but wandered over to the mirror to assess the damage.
An angry red slash extended from just above her eyebrow down under her eye and curving a little in the general vicinity of her nose. Stiff black sutures held it together.
"Hey there, Pretty...ugly." she murmured to herself with a cynical grin. "Well, at least the swellings gone down."
"Are you SURE you dont want an eyepatch?" the nurse asked.
"Nope, two eyes are better than one in my line of work." she said, then picked up her belongings and clipped along towards M. Lacrimosa's room.
"If you comment on it I will shoot your helpless little self dead where you lay." Molly said matter-of-factly as she entered his room. "Oh, Vulkie and Charlie aren't here? And who is this?"
She raised her eyebrows at the man standing near Lacrimosa's bed, and then hissed as the movement pulled at her stitches.

Charlie pulled out his pocket watch. "Its 9:15 p.m" he said
"I'm getting out tomorrow. Let's get some sleep." I replied.
The next morning, everyone was back in my hospital room including Nellie and Heimlich.
The doctor had given and antibiotic to reduce the chance of infection, and pain medication to take when needed.
"I need to get a ride, either back to Luigi's bar, or home so I can change out of these bullet ridden clothes, and then to Luigi's so I can get my car." I said after I checked out.
Vulkie stepped up. "I'll talke you home. Molly will come with us. We'll make sure that she doesn't try to hurt her self again. Okay?
"Okay," I said. "Charlie? I want you and Nellie to search his appartment. We'll meet back at the Tricky Mister back in Sleuthville tonight at 10:00." I said.
"Where can I come into help?" Heimlich asked.
"Go with Charlie and Nellie." I said, "It will be two three people teams. Me, Vulkie and Molly will come back here after I get cleaned up and changed. I want you, Chalie, and Nellie to do some investigating in the northern area of this side of Manhattan. Meet back at the Tricky Mister bar. It's safer there than here."
Everyone split up. We got to my small apartment so I can change into new clothes. I came out of my room wearing my charcol gray double breasted suit. It was one of my favorite suits. I had my fedora on and cocked to a slant above my right eye. Vulkie and Molly laughed at me. It seemed as though Molly felt better than she did the previous day. That was good.
"Ready to go back and do some investigating?" I asked with a smile. We left to go back. The first stop was to go to Luigi's so I could get my car back. Hopefully after that, we could get a good lead to find Mr. Craig.
"Charlie? I want you and Nellie to search his appartment. We'll meet back at the Tricky Mister back in Sleuthville tonight at 10:00." Marc told me. Then Heimlich asked " Where can I come into help?" Marc told him to come with us.
We left the hospital through the main lobby and got into my car. Nellie and Heim were very talkative mostly stuff about Heim's exploits. You could really tell Nellie was a good journalist. I kept to myself mostly going over things that didnt make any sense to me.
1. Charles Craig not leaving the city
2. Both his mom and sister killed by none other than LCN
3. What did the victim know to get her killed?
We pulled up to the address of Craig's apartment. " I'm gonna let you two handle this part. I think I'm gonna pay a visit to Carol Fisher's place. See if I can find any evidence that may have been missed." I said.
" Charlie I think it would be best to stick together on this one we dont need you going off like a loose cannon again." Heim replied.
" Look, I know what I'm doing. You two just watch each other's back. I'll meet you guys at the bar." I stated harshly.
" Hey you two calm down were a team here. I agree with Mr. Von Victor we should stay together its dangerous out here. We into some serious stuff." Nellie said.
I lit a cigarette and got back in the car. I didnt even give time for a arguement. I just sped away.
" Wonderful, there goes Charlie Cain the most stubborn wild card detective I've ever heard of. " Heim said
" Do you think he's gonna get into trouble?" Nellie asked.
" No, I know he will." Heim replied. " Come on dear lets get to searching this apartment. Times awaisting." He said.
I saw them head into the building as I drove away. I knew they were right. But I had a hunch I was getting closer finding out the truth. Thats what this job is about the truth.
I pulled up outside Carol Fisher's apartment building. I saw her name on the mail boxes in the lobby.
Double sided as one person could be,I had to make a decision. Sticking with the LCN and getting a lot of money,or risking my life and getting justice.
I've always been on the good side. But the money that was offered to me... One million dollars to let Craig go and "stop" my friends from finding him... Tempting...
You know what happened, which decision I made? You'll know soon.
"Let's go" I said to Molly and Marc and I drove us towards Luigi's bar. It still was operative, after our "last" visit.
"I'll wait in the car. You two can go in and "interrogate" " I said and watched as Marc and Molly went in the bar. I started my engine and drove away, dreaming about my "future".
Knowing that I couldn't go back to the l0t of them,I decided to go to my house, only to see an impatient "Lucky" at the door.
"Hiya darling. I'm doing my work, sorry I've been late.." I said and Luciano slapped me in my face. "You IDIOT! You know what you've done?! You've let Lacrimosa live,he's getting nearer to Craig then we are at the moment. If you continue with this stupidness, you'll get no million dollars!" Luciano said and he fiercely kissed me on the mouth.
"Who needs money anyway,if I got the "largest" mob boss there ever was." I replied and kissed back.
The next morning,I received a phonecall from Marc. He wanted to speak with me.
"Strange..." I said and I went to see Marc, only to be waited up by the whole gang, with guns pointed at me.
"Guys,it's me,Vulkie. You can trust me.." I murmered and began to act a bit nervous,as Marc cocked his gun...
I went to the third floor and found the room easily enough still had the police tape up.
Upon entering the room I saw the complete mess that was left. Apparently Carol put up a huge fight. While sifting through the mess I came across a picture in a broken frame. It was a picture of Carol I believe and Charles Craig , his mother, and sister. I pulled the picture out of the frame and on the back was a number 117-A.
" Hmm?" I murmered aloud. " What could this be?" I asked into the nothingness.
I pocketed the picture and looked around some more. I must have been in there longer than I thought cause when I got back outside it was dark. I made my way to my car. Then out of the alley way I saw a shadow move.
It spoke ......
" Mr. Cain, I have a message for you." a mans voice said.
Just then I heard the sound of a tommy gun being charged.
My first instinct was to fire back but there was no way of getting a shot off in time. I jumped behind a car just as bullets peppered the spot I had just been standing in.
" Great, just great." I said to myself.
Vulkie dropped Molly and I off at Luigi's Bar. We walked in and as it was the day before, it was dimly lit crawling around with mobsters and thugs. There in the back sat the same creepy looking shady character I spoke with yesterday. I approached him from behind while Molly sat infront of him pretending to flirt with him for information. She asked him a question about Craig's connections with La Cosa Nostra. He laughed and said, "Now now missey, I can't tell you that."
She glanced at me and I made my move. I slammed his head against the table and he groaned aloud in pain. I picked him up and drug him out back into the alley, throwing him into a pile of trash.
"START TALKING!!" I spat in his face.
"You've got a lot of nerve comming in here-"
"Shut UP! AND TALK!" I screamed in his face. I wasn't joking. I threw him downd and pulled out my revolver and aimed it at his head. Then he told me he had been seeing someone that has been with me the whole time tipping off the Mafia..tipping of the Mob boss of all bosses...Luciano. It was Vulkie.
Molly and I went out side knowing that Vulkie had probably left and we were right. Thankfully, there was my car. Right in the same spot I had left it. We got in to go find Heimlich, Nellie, and Charlie.
It took the rest of the day to find Heimlich and Nellie. Unfortunatley they didn't find anything at Craig's appartment. But I told them about Vulkie. The next morning, Heimlich, Nellie, Molly, and I were in my office. I called Vulkie's office and she, herself, asnwered the phone.
"Vulkie? You and I need to have a little talk."
--15 minutes later--
Vulkie walked into my office. Nellie grabbed her and threw her into a chair accross from my desk. Heimlich stood in one corner and Molly in the other. I stood int he middle of the room. We had no idea where Charlie was but we here hoping he would get the idea to come by my office.
"A source tells me that you've been hanging around Luciano and tipping him off about us-"
"Guys, it's me, Vulkie. You can trust me-"
I cocked the hammer back on my revolver. I wasn't playing games with her. We were after a killer and she was betraying us.
Sweat started to pour down her face. She was nervous. We had her trapped.
"Start talking." Heimlich said from behind me. He slowly approached her.
Vulkie let out a laugh.
"Heim," she said short for Heimlich, "you don't honestly believe-"
"As a matter of fact, I do" he said with out a smile. He didn't have to pull out his gun.
"Start talking!" I yelled.
Vulkie new that the jig was up. She knew she had no other choice to start talking. Luciano wouldn't like it. But we didn't like her betraying us like this.
If there is one thing I hated, it was a traitor. Especially when the traitor was a detective too.
She new that there was no getting out of this and she opened her mouth to speak.
