It was the curtain call and Clift Garrett had to put on a smile.

It was not genuine…

It was not even convincing...

It was rather a smile of disbelief…

"Well.. that much is expected, Mak..." Clift could not explain Victoria's or Vulkie's actions even to himself and what will always be confusing to him. "I got Cody this."

He took out a huge toy car, knowing how much Cody loved car models.

That made Makensie smile. She always loved it when someone did something nice for Cody, and she knew that Clift compensated not spending enough time with his son with gifts.

Makensie spoke. "Well that is sweet."

"...and these are for you..." Clift gave her a bouqet of red roses.

"Thank you." Makensie said but did not comment further. Claudia came and took the flowers from Mak. Clift noticed Georgio standing there eyeing him. Georgio always made him uncomfortable, but Mak liked him well enough and so did Cody, and that was enough for Clift.

"Violet is in town." Clift spoke.

"I know, I just met her and it was wonderful..." Mak smiled. "Did you see her?"

"Yes. I went to meet her in the hotel she is staying at, The Broadway Plaza. I wanted to talk about Isabella... if I see Cody so very little, I see Isabella even less..."

"Oh? and did you tell her of your little proposition?"

"No... I'm rethinking that a little... I don't want that to end in disaster. Anyways I just stopped by to give you this and tell you I am sorry again for having involved you so deeply in my... personal life."

Mak wasn't too happy about hearing that Clift had a personal life separate from her. She longed to be his personal life.

"Anyhow, I gotta go. I'm meeting an old friend for dinner. Charlie Cain."

Mak wondered, does everyone know everyone else in this town. "Charlie? He's an old friend of mine too..."

"Well, you can join us for dinner this case."

Georgio finally spoke. "I'll escort you Mak, just to make sure your safe."

Clift raised an eyebrow. "Well, she's perfectly safe with me, I am a detective don't you remember?"

"Detective turned actor. But she wasn't safe the last time was she?"

"I see your point Georgio... Fine you can come." Clift said as he walked to the door and then he said over his shoulders. "... and by the way, I am an actor turned detective turned actor... an actor originally."

He nodded to Mak. "I'll see you at dinner with Charlie. We're meeting at the 21 Club."

Mak spoke weakly as she was very tired. "I will try to make it but can't promise anything."

With that Clift left deep in thought.

Clift and Charlie met at the 21 Club, and as they both greeted one another and took their seat, they saw Georgio come in.

Clift looked at him, wondering where Mak was at. Remembering how she always had to go to the restroom before they sat down, he decided that was probably where she was at.

"Good evening, Georgio. So glad you could make it", Clift said, dryly.

Georgio smiled, with no friendliness in at all, and said, "I know how excited you were to have me in your presence, while eating but, I only came here to give you some unfortunate news. Fortunate to some, though, ofcourse" He added a cocky smile.

Clift frowned, then said, "What is it? Makensie get a run in her nylons?"

Charlie grinned, and said, "Oh, Makensie is joining us, is she? How wonderful!"

Georgio nods, then says, "She WAS going to join you. She wasn't feeling well, as shewas getting ready, and decided to just go to bed and get some rest. She asked if she could take a rain check"

"Well, of course! I DO hope she is ok. I will check in on her on the way home", Clift said, with concern.

Georgio replied, "That won't be necessary, Mr Garret. I'm sleeping in the Guest House, but Im sure she will be quite alright, with a good nights rest"

Charlie didn't know what was going on, with the latest events concerning Makensie and the shooting, so he said, "Why such concern? I mean, we all get exhausted running up and down the streets looking for bad guys"

Clift looked at Charlie, then said, "I will fill you in later"

Looking to Georgio, he said, in an adament tone, "I will stop by on the way home"

"...and interrupt Makensie's sleep? ...and here I thought you were a compassionate man, Mr Garret", Georgio said, with a slight smirk.

Sighing, Clift said, "Very well, then. YOU win. THIS time, but if anything goes on with Makensie, that needs medical attention, you CALL me. Immediately"

"Oh of course. Who else would I call?", Georgio said, rolling his eyes.

Georgio nodded toward Chrlie, then looked at Clift, and said, "I will leave you to your dinner. I'd love to stay and chat, but, I must get back. Have a good evening gentleman"

Charlie looked at Clift, then said, "You two seem to just love each other"

Clift chuckled, then said, "That obvious? He makes me uncomfortable, but, Makensie likes him, and he actualy likes her , and she IS in good hands. I mean, I sure wouldn't mess with him, but, he still gets under my skin"

Charlie laughed, and they resumed their dinner, and conversation.

As the time and conversation flew by Charlie realized that he had never known Mak and Clift were aquainted. "My how I've let things go" Charlie thought to himself. " I should have stayed in contact with my friends...their lives are so different now...." Charlie chided himself.

"So Clift tell me, how is it that you came to know Mak?" Charlie asked.

" Ok, ok, I will but first I wanna know where you have been. And why didnt you let anyone know you where leaving?" Clift said finishing a bite of lobster.

" Deal..... I went to London and a few other places. Doing work or whatnot. I just couldnt stay here anymore. Everywhere I saw the corruption. And I knew that Garrison was out there somewhere. Not a day goes by that I dont think of the things that lunatic has done." Charlie replied feeling anger rising up from the depths.

" And I am deeply sorry I didnt stay in contact more... but with all the horrible things in my past I had thought it would be better to just leave." Charlie said.

" Charlie I'm sorry I never knew. If I had only...." Clift was saying

"Its ok Clift. No one knows.... That man framed me for murder. He ruined my career my life. And people around here still blame me. Like I'm a animal." Charlie said

" Ok enough about me..........tell me the story. How'd you meet Mak?" Charlie asked smiling for the first time in a few minutes.
