It was the curtain call and Clift Garrett had to put on a smile.

It was not genuine…

It was not even convincing...

It was rather a smile of disbelief…

Standing next to his heroine on the stage of the Marquee Theatre as the crowds wildly cheered and applauded, Clift could not believe that he was doing this all over again.

He thought he has said his final goodbyes to his days on the stage when he left his acting career on the opening night of “Anna Christie” to investigate his first crime -not officially at first, but then turning into a fully fledged detective.

Now... he has now left detection to once again pursue acting.

His last three-dozen cases did not pay him much, if anything at all. All his clients had turned out to be the real criminals, and with two children carrying his name and looking to him for financial support from time to time, Clift Garrett had to go back to his old agent and hope for any role to come his way.

Of course, he would not accept anything less than Broadway. He had not reached a level of desperation that would force him to compromise his previous acting career and portfolio.

However, something was wrong this time around. His acting skills and even his onstage voice have been compromised by his life of intense detection and vigorous seeking of answers.

Not everyone was a fan anymore, and not everyone was a friend. Yet only through acting did he begin to shake off the residues of his very eventful days as a detective… His many encounters and romantic liaisons… The births of his two children… Rise and fall...

Clift finally awoke from his stage daze to realize he was already somehow in his changing room. He started wiping off the stage make-up he had on. He could not believe he was back to applying stage make-up after years of enjoying the liberty of a wash-and-go fresh face.

He was finally combing his hair, in his three-piece suit, ready to leave his changing room when a knock came to the door…

Knowing Clift Garrett only from his famous plays,Vulkie decided to visit his last play. "The lonely dancer with the wolves". Vulkie heard from a good of hers that the roleplay was good. But Clift was getting old. His voice was getting bad,his acting skills were slightly "wrong" and the audience sometimes yelled "boo".

But Vulkie was a diehard fan of Clift. She had seen every play of him,she had a few posters of him and even a small cap.

Vulkie's ideal dream was to meet Clift, private. So she could ask him about all his plays and how he "acts" and if she could get a signed "note" from him.

Vulkie bought a small bouquet of roses, went to the theater where Clift played and asked to the lobby attendant where she could find Mr. Garrett.

Just as she was about to knock the door,Vulkie was interrupted by a guard. "What are you doing here?" the guard said to Vulkie.

"I'm here to meet Mr. Garrett. I have permission to do so" Vulkie said, bluffing. The guard saw through it,but Vulkie didn't give up. She heavily knocked on the door, hoping Clift would open the door for her and invite her in...

She heard three steps and suddenly, the door was opened,to reveal the beautiful sight of Clift Garrett.

"How can I be of assistance Miss...?" Clift asked and Vulkie was a bit blinded by the sight of him, almost passing out..

"Vulkie..." the young lady replied shyly.

Clift Garrett was used to dealing with fans in his capacity as a stage actor. He instantly felt that this young woman was different -not your regular fan. He felt that they almost certainly had more in common than meets the eye. "Well, Miss Vulkie, I would invite you to come but I was on my way out of the Marquee."

"Heard that Miss?" the guard addressed Vulkie harshly. "Mr. Garrett needs to leave and has no time to speak with fans or sign-"

"That's okay I'll handle this, Mitch." Clift cut the bodyguard mid-sentence. He then notcied the beautiful roses Vulkie held. "Would it be pretentious of me to think that these are for me?"

"Not at all Mr. Garrett," Vulkie laughed handing him the bouquet. "I really enjoyed the show tonight."

"Ah well... some critics would beg to differ... thanks for your kindness though..." A thought hit Clift just then. "Say, I was planning on having dinner at '21'... alone... wouldn't mind the company of an adoring fan..." Clift laughed.

Vulkie could not speak due to her shock. She managed a nod.

Clift smiled and asked to make sure. "So is that a yes?"

(Earlier in the evening)

Makensie was excited to be spending an evening with her very good friend, and possible romantic interest, Carlos Luciano. He was a charming man, and very very handsome. There was a mystery about this man, but, it's also what drew her to him. After all, she IS a detective, right? We all love a good mystery. Carlos treats her like a queen, and he also is kind to her son, Cody. In fact, he wanted us to bring Cody tonight but, I had told him no, that I wanted an adult night out.

When they sat down, and as the show started she was much paying attention to who was who on stage. She was in dream land sitting beside her new mr wonderful.

As she leaned into him, as he put his arm around her, over her chair, her face dropped.

Carlos must've noticed, because he said, in his heavy New York accent, "What's wrong, doll? You looked like you've seen a ghost!"

Makensie mumbles, "I think I have"

She brushed that statement off, and watched the show, impressed with Clift's acting skills.

Watching him, she could see so much of their son in him. Yes, Clift Garrett is the father of her beautiful son, Cody James. Cody James Garrett.

When the show ended, and he went off stage, she had excused herself from Carlos, and was going to say hi to her old friend, and lover.

She got stopped by a guard along the way, but, after her telling him who she was, he had let her by.

As she got closer down the hall, she saw him.

To herself, she said, "Still as handsome as ever"

Then she saw him talking to a young woman.

Shaking her head, chuckling, she says, "He hasn't changed"

Carlos appeared behind her, standing a bit away from her, as he hollered loudly, over the crowd noise, "Makensie, darling, we really need to be going. We have a dinner date with Mr and Mrs Robertson, and we can't be late. My career depends on this dinner date"

Turning, she said, with a smile, "Coming dear"

Looking at Clift one more time, she smiled softly, then turned toward Carlos, walked to him, grabbing his hand as they walked off.

Clift was waiting for the young lady's reply when he heard someone mention a familiar name.

"Makensie", he said.

The young woman said, "Excuse me?"

Clift looked startled , and said, with a smile, "Oh, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I have to go check on something. Dinner though, in an hour"

She nodded, smiling, as he quickly walked off.

As he walked to the auditorium, he was talking out loud, saying, "Makensie? Of course it can't be MY Makensie...or, I mean, my son's Makensie. Could it?"

He quickly looked all over the place, when he saw her.

Her back was to him, but he would recognize her anywhere. That laugh, and how she throws her head back when she does.

Clift did see Makensie often, or often enough, because they shared a son together....Cody James Garrett.

True, he hasnt been around in awhile, due to his busy schedule but, after seeing Makensie here, he thought it be best that he planned a visit to spend time with his son.

Walking back to his date for the evening, he chuckled to himself, thinking, "I bet Makensie didn't even know that I was acting again. The look on her face had to be priceless"

"Yes" Vulkie replied, almost falling down on the ground.

"My god" Vulkie thought,"a date with THE Clift Garrett. I've got to tell my friends when it's over!" Vulkie also thought.

"Great.I'll see you 21st street,at the Italian place, right?" Vulkie asked Clift and he nodded.

****A few hours later****

It was getting late, about 8 pm. Vulkie entered the small bistro and noticed that it was deserted. No guests, only the waiter and the "chef" were standing in the room, talking.

"Wonder where Clift is now..." Vulkie thought.

Just then,Clift entered the bistro with the bodyguard.

"Good evening Miss Vulkie, please, take a seat" Clift said, pointing to a table. As Vulkie was about to take the chair,Clift shoved it away from the table and shoved it back when Vulkie took place.

"You're a true gentleman" Vulkie said,flattering Clift.

"Why,thank you. You look lovely in that dress." Clift said, flattering back.

Vulkie blushed and the waiter came, asking what they wanted. Clift ordered the veal steak and Vulkie also ordered the veal steak. Also,a small bottle of red wine made the evening perfect. Clift talked about his acting career and Vulkie about her detective career.

"Wow,you've been through a lot.." Clift said. "Yeah..." Vulkie said absently.

Suddenly, two females entered the bistro, shot the bodyguard, the waiter and the chef down and noticed Clift and Vulkie sitting there.

"Well well, who do we have here..." the blonde female said, pointing her gun at Vulkie...

It only took Clift's bodyguard a second to disarm the blonde female. Whilst Clift rose quickly and managed to swiftly disarm the redhead. The police arrived some minutes later having been contacted by the manager of the restaurant.

It was a couple hours later that Clift was driving Vulkie home when they spoke.

"You yourself seem to have been through a lot Mr. Garrett. Would not have expected an actor to think as fast as you did or act as quickly." Vulkie smiled.

Clift looked to her. "Well, I was a detective myself for some time before deciding to resume my acting career... and you Miss Vulkie, you better watch it, seems like you have more people after you than you care to reveal. You must've been involved in some pretty ugly business."

"Well..." Vulkie began but decide to change the subject. "So why did you stop being a detective? Why back to being an actor when you can actually live the thrill... the real life thrill?"

"Well..." It was Clift's time to hesitate. "The money dried out. I was not part of an agency any longer and I had two kids. Rich mothers. The boy is living like a Crown Prince and the girl like a Princess Royal. Acting is the only sure way to make money for me fast."

Vulkie nodded.

"Plus," Clift added. "I thought I better invest in my looks while they last. Not sure I have enough acting talent to make the transition and make money as a older actor."

By then they reached Vulkie's apartment.

"Thank you for a lovely evening Mr. Garrett." Vulkie said softly.

Clift smiled to her. "You're alright kid. Take care and I should like to meet up with you soon and hopefully have a more peaceful dinner this time."

Clift gave Vulkie a kiss on the cheek and then left.

** Later in the Night **

Clift arrived home exhausted.

A perfomance, a wonderful date, armed confrontation and seeing Makensie, the mother of his son with another man took a toll on him.

Yet he was dating other women, why not be okay with Mak dating other men. Also seeing Mak brought back many memories and names: Joseph Bane, Joseph Zeo, Violet Parr, Barry Grant...

He shook his head back to the present moment and wrote Vulkie a short thank you note before going to bed:

"Dear Vulkie,

Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Pardon my curiousity, but I would like to know what your name means, or who were you named after.

Yours,

Clift"

He would have the note sent the next morning, but for now it was time for a very deep sleep.

Later that evening, after a night spent with Carlos, at the show, she decided to unwind with a nice glass of wine, and a hot bath.

Carlos wanted to come in for a night cap, but, she knew better than to let that happen. She wasn't going to make the same mistakes she made years back with man who had the most handsome face ever.

Looking toward the doorway of the kitchen, as she made her way to the bathroom with her glass of wine, she saw a mirror image of her past.

Cody James. Makensie smiled warmly, and thought, "This was the best thing that ever came out of all my mistakes"

"Hi Mom! Whatchaaa doin?" , Cody said, happily, as he ran up to her with chocolate stains around his mouth.

Makensie kneeled down, and said, "I'm going to relax in a hot bath. I know what YOU are going to do?" She tapped his nose lightly with her finger, in emphasis.

"What?", Cody said, excitedly before he even knew what she was going to say.

"You are going to go in the kitchen, and have Claudia wipe your face off", Makensie said, laughing.

Cody ran into the kitchen, but not before saying, "Ahhhh MOMMMMM!!"

Laughing, she stepped into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her.

Mistakes. No, she certainly couldn't consider Clift a mistake. When she saw him talking to another woman, her heart did a flip flop. Oh, she thought the world of Carlos, and they had a great future. She hoped. There was always something so magical, though, between her and Clift.

"Oh please STOP, Makensie. You and him are through, and besides, you never worked anyway. Well, except for where it mattered most", she was saying out loud to herself, smiling.

She knew that all Clift was now, was the Father of their beautiful son and she had no regrets there.

He just brought back so many memories, when seeing him. All the excitement, the danger, the chaos.....the love.
