*Prologue*

In the mornings, when no one could see me, I cried until I was gasping for air. The pain of losing my husband, baby, sister, and a friend in less than a year was finally penetrating the hard shell of protection that had enveloped me for so long. But would I let anyone see me that way? No. Never. I was strong.

After I got my breath back, I would carefully dry my eyes, apply makeup, and paste a cheerful grin on my face. I would stop to pet dogs on my way to the office, say hello to people on the streets, and studiously avoid any baby trams I saw coming my way.

In essence, I acted as my friends had always seen me, and did my best to make sure no one worried about me. But I was falling apart, and wishing I would just die. There was no point in living anymore. All day long I hunted for murderers. I saw my family in every face that lay stiff and cold. Every case where the victim was shot made me remember being shot. And the days had begun to blur together.

Then the letter came. It looked like an ordinary letter. A long envelope, the return address was an Attorney's office in New York City. I looked closer. It was the attorney my father had used. 'Why are they contacting me?' I thought as I ripped open the envelope and closed the door to my office. Another envelope with a return address of Leake and Watts from Yonkers, New York fell out along with a with a note that had READ THIS FIRST written on top. 'Strange,' I thought as I began to read.

I was fidgeting, uncomfortable with the assessment. "Dr. Hoo, what is your point? I can't control Vulkie! I can try, but... I was just given custody of Josèe, and the person who shot Vulkie had had the gun trained on me, and Joseph isn't here, and Freddie is dead, and Lisette, and Papa, and-"

"Miss Nin! Please, calm down!" Dr. Hoo jumped up and knelt down next to me as Josèe started crying. "Miss Nin, look into my eyes, please. Deep breath, that's it. Another."

I blinked hard. "Dr. Hoo-"

"I think I'm getting a picture of your situation, Anais, may I call you Anais?" I blushed, looking down to where his hands clasped mine.

"Of course you may," I said softly, voice gone hoarse from unshed tears.

"Another lolli, please?" asked Josèe in a plaintive tone.

"Sure, Little Josèe. Another cherry one?" Dr. Hoo was suddenly on the other side of the room while I blinked stupidly after him.

Josèe nodded solemnly as Dr. Hoo handed her the bright red lollipop.

"Would you like one too, Anais?" he asked kindly.

"Sure! Why not?" I replied, accepting another red lollipop and sticking it in my mouth. I felt better instantly. 'This must be why Riza loves lollipops' I thought, smiling a bit.

"As I was saying, I think I'm getting a picture of your situation. You, Vulkie, and that man who is in there with her right now are all high profile detectives who have many enemies. You were just given care of you deceased sister's child, and you have people after you. Right?"

I stared at him in wonder. "Doctor..." I was speechless.

"I will take that as a yes. Here is what I can do. I can keep Vulkie safe in the hospital. You and Josèe can move out to my house for a week while you or your friend with Miss Vulkie arranges someplace for you to go. Then, you need to disappear, Anais. When Miss Vulkie is well enough, I will speak to her about safety and such."

"Tell her to avoid getting shot, will you Doctor?" I interrupted.

"Anais, that will be the first thing I tell her."

"Thank you. Now, what was that about moving into your house?"

Before the doctor could respond, Anais spotted Heimlich in the doorway and he looked distressed. "Mr. VonVictor!" Anais called, "What's wrong? We're in here!"

Heimlich rushed in, "Anais please... Heimlich. I need to find the doctor right now!"

Dr. Hoo stood up, "I'm the doctor, what's the problem?" he asked.

"Doctor who?" Heimlich asked.

"Yes," Dr. Hoo responded, "how did you know?"

"Never mind that!" Anais shouted, startling little Josèe, "What's wrong Heimlich?"

"It's Vulkie," Heimlich responded, "she's convulsing. She started talking about someone named Joseph. I told her I didn't know anyone named Joseph but she said he had to know. I told her Josèe was with you and was perfectly fine. She just... I don't know Anais... her eyes rolled back and she's thrashing! We have to do something!"

The three ran down the hallway Vulkie's room to find a nurse restraining her and shoving a tongue depressor into her mouth. Vulkie was thrashing about in her bed and foaming at the mouth.

Dr. Hoo ran over and began filling up a syringe. "Nurse hold her steady! I need to inject her!" he shouted.

Anais felt the tears welling up in her eyes, "Heimlich... could you please take Josèe downstairs to get some juice? I think I need to go for a walk..."

Heimlich nodded, "Anything you need Anais."

They stood over Vulkie's motionless body. "I've put her into a coma," Dr. Hoo explained, "she's obviously delusional, and while conscious she's a danger to herself and others. By the time she wakes up her system should have repaired itself enough that the hallucinations will have stopped."

Heimlich picked up Vulkie's hand, "If you can hear me... squeeze my hand Vulkie." The look of disappointment on his face said it all. "What if she doesn't wake up Dr. Hoo?"

Dr. Hoo shook his head, "It's not likely, but it is a possibility. Right now your friend is likely oblivious to anything going on and is in her own nonsensical world. It's the best place for her."

"You're going away for a long time Dart!" Detective Elliot Stabler said.

"Yo Dawg! Why you gonna do me like that?" Dart protested as Stabler led him down the stairs in handcuffs.

"Your a good detective Dart but your methods are nuts. We gotta bring ya in man." he said

Dart nodded. He knew he was defeated this time and looked back at the hospital where his new acquantinces were one last time before being shoved into the police cruiser headed back to Maine. Somehow he knew their paths would cross again somehow someday.

Total darkness....
I can't remember things....
Joseph.....
Anais........
Heimlich....
Friends.....

........................
........................
........................

Suddenly,I woke up. "What, what day is it?" I asked. And there stood Ace.

"Ace... But.... But you're supposed to be...."

"Dead,Vulkie? You know me,never shall I be dead... I'm here with you,for now... You just go back to sleep now... Your friends are waiting for you..." Ace said.

"Alright" I whispered and I closed my eyes.

Total darkness once again....
Falling into darkness.....
I can hear children yelling or screaming, having fun.
Did I just saw my lifetime flashing by?
Nah,I don't think so. I'm safe,now...

Heimlich bounced Josèe on his knee as she giggled, "Uncle Heimie it tickles!"

He laughed, "Oh it tickles does it? Well in that case I'll have to do it more!"

They were interrupted by Anais who walked into the lounge with a smile on her face, "Well I see you two are getting along well. I didn't know that you were so good with kids Heim."

Heimlich gave a toothy grin, "Neither did I my dear, neither did I, but this little girl just absolutely melts your heart doesn't she?"

Anais nodded sadly, "She does, and that's why I've thought about what you said."

His face fell, "Anais, when I said that I wasn't..." he started.

"No!" Anais shouted, "That's exactly it. You were thinking. You weren't just speaking out of hurt. In all of your years of experience, you honestly believe that there is a danger."

"I.. I don't know..." Heimlich stuttered out.

Anais sighed, "I'm going away for a bit Heimlich, and I'm taking Josèe with me. I've been offered a place to stay and I'm going to take it. Somewhere where they won't find me."

He felt his heart seize in his chest, "Where!? Where are you going? Let me help you!"

Anais shook her head as she picked Josèe up, "I'm sorry Heimlich, I can't tell anyone," the tears flowed openly from her eyes, "and I don't think I'll ever see you again. Please take good care of Vulkie."

Heimlich felt the tears coming down his own face now. He barely knew this woman and now he was weeping for the loss of her friendship. He moved as if to embrace her, but she pulled away, "No..." she whispered, "just... no." She turned around and carried Josèe out.

Heimlich stood there long after she was gone. His body felt numb, and he could feel the warm burning of despair searing through his veins. He reached into his pocket and produced his pocket flask. He unscrewed the top and poured it down his throat. The burning sensation of the whiskey paled in comparison to the burn he felt throughout his entire being.

He collapsed on the couch exhausted.

It felt like months passed when I woke up,but actually,it were 10 days passing by. Longer then Dr. Hoo anticipated. My internal bleedings stopped after 7 days, but before that,Dr. Hoo almost declared me as a lost person, not waking up. That's what Heimlich told me..

This is what happened when I woke up...

Slowly,I opened my eyes. "Is this real?" I asked. Heimlich immediately looked up,yelled : "Doctor, she's awake!" and rushed towards me.

"Thank god, you're awake.." Heimlich said and he began to start crying. Just then,a doctor came in.

"Well,if it ain't our Sleeping Beauty" the doctor said, flattering.

"I hope I wasn't too much of a trouble?" I asked the doctor. His head just bowed down to the ground. "I even had the chance to "unplug" you,but I wouldn't vouch for that. Not an old friend..." Heimlich said, with tears welling up his eyes.

"Where's Anais and Josèe?. I'm sure she wants to know I'm alright.." I asked towards Heim.

His lips began to tremble. "Ehmm, how do I say this... She's gone.. She left towards a "safe' place, disappearing. She doesn't want to be found.." Heimlich said and I turned my back against him, rolling to the left side of the bed,as tears were welling up in my eyes.

"I knew this would happen one day. I knew it.." I murmered. Heimlich stood there, knowing he had "disappointed me". "You couldn't have stopped her Heim. I know Anais. If she has something to do,she wants to go through it,to the full end" I said.

Heimlich place a hand on my shoulder and said. "I understand. I'm here to take care of you.."

My life, my entire reason for living, was bundled up in my lap. A precious child, not even mine. Why did she matter so much? I hadn't cared enough when I had been pregnant to quit my job with a twist of danger- a chance of death- at every turn. And I had lost him. That might be why. I couldn't lose anymore family. For all I put myself in deadly situations, I did want to live. And now, I was sacrificing my life for the life of my niece. Not literally, of course, but I was giving up my friends, job, and identity for un unknown period of time.

A wide brimmed hat sat on my head as I stared at the curtains that covered the windows of the back seat of Dr. Hoo's new car- a shiny black four door Dodge Sedan. He had the headlights on, and was talking about "improved spring suspension"- whatever the heck that was.

I nodded, said the polite "Oh? How interesting!" while I thought. Josèe drifted off to sleep in my lap.

Half an hour later we arrived. Dr. Hoo owned a medium sized home just outside the city in New Jersey. It was too dark to see it properly, but it looked nice enough- cozy, homelike.

We walked up the steps, Josèe bundled up in my arms, gently stirring as I murmured soothingly in her ear.

"Father! You're home!" A woman exclaimed, throwing open the door. "And you brought someone home with you, too? Come in! Come in!"

Dr. Hoo hurried Josèe and me inside, quickly following.

"Gennie? This is Miss Anais Nin, and her niece, Josèe. They will stay with us for a few nights while Anais arranges to leave the country. Anais? This is my daughter, Gennie Hoo," the Doctor made the introductions.

"Now! You need sleep, my dear!" he said to me, trailing a finger down a cheek. I turned bright red.
