What Can We Do to Help Sleuth?

Last night I spoke of some ideas I wanted to discuss with everyone on how to give a little kick-start to Sleuth. I would like to share these now and hear feedback. These things are not required of the Admin, but things we can do as a community to try to get things flowing again.

NOTE: Please do not bring up the development team. That ship has come and gone. This post is aimed purely at community-oriented initiatives, not changing the game itself.

Also, I would like to note that many players have been doing some really good things around here. The contests for free subs, ctown's radio show, AVH matches. I do not mean to discredit any of this. It's all wonderful. I just think we can do a little more :-)

#1 Advertising - Let's get out there and spread the word. This is a great little gem that we have found and there are probably others that would love it as much as we do. Do you belong to another internet site? A Group for Nail-Biters with Herpes? Post on the message board about Sleuth! (well maybe not that, but you get my meaning) Let others know outside of Sleuth what a great place this is. I would especially target (for Noir) adults who enjoy logic-type puzzles. That is what kept me addicted to this game for so long.

I think I want to say this... whilst we're thinking about ways to encourage people to play and stay, I think it's important that we dont lose the original flavour of Sleuth. Not 'just' the community aspect, but the 'I have to use my brain aspect'. I know that in todays modern age that people like to have it handed to them on a silver platter, but what's wrong with challenging people's minds; making them feel like they have actually worked towards a goal; and making them feel like they've earnt their stripes. Sleuth Noir 'can' be hard. But isn't that good? Or have I missed the point of the game. It progresses from Easy to Almost Impossible. That's the nature of the game right? Anyway it's a bit philosophical, but in an effort to bring the razzle dazzle back into Sleuth let's not lose the black and white grittiness that makes it 'Noir'.

I do agree with you SS :-)
That's why I am a programmer of mind. I like to "work for it", and I like solving logics...
Also, it's the reason why I think it would be a pity if Sleuth Noir went open code... - because then it would be possible to read from the code or the database or a combination of the code and database any secret that's within Sleuth Noir - regardless of how hard and thorough Ben works to hide information.
If I were to choose what to add to Sleuth, it would be grouped into two segments.
1) Doing current things (which don't require brain work) more assisted or easier.
2) Bringing more challenges into the game. (This will be the more fun part to develop, but also the part that will require more effort)

SS I agree with you. I believe that was my Point #3 ;) We all need to stop making it too easy for new players.

20 days us definitely way too long to remember something especially with a lack of sleep and one alcohol filled week. :)

But it's on the first page! You don't really have to dig or anything. ;)

And for the record, I am having sooo much fun discovering stuff myself, and unlocking the cases!!! Yes, I have had some help, but nothing has just been handed to me on a golden platter or anything, which makes everything so much more fun! It feels like it is mine, not someone's pet detective.

Is what I'm trying to say coming across at all? If it isn't, let me know, and I'll try to explain it better. ;)

There is a way to drum up free advertising for Sleuth without any divine intervention from the Gods...

You may have seen it before on the logout page, there are links to vote for Sleuth on topwebgames.com and free-games.com.au. The more votes a game gets, the higher up the list of popular games it is. And as such it is more likely to be spotted by potential new players. You need to register with free-games.com.au, but if you copy this link into your browser:

http://www.topwebgames.com/in.asp?id=1876

You can vote for Sleuth without having to register. The best thing is, you can do this every day, so if you have a minute to spare, vote for Sleuth!

That's a fantastic idea, and it only takes a minute (or less, if you're not a fumble fingers like I am). If we move Sleuth up into the top ranks, we have a good chance of getting some new people to stop by and try it!

Plus a difference of 9 people made the game go up by about 140 people. If we were to get 20 people then we could hit the top 100 possibly.
