Leopold Parr walked as fast as he possibly could in and around Victoria Station. The young officer had anticipated the arrival of his younger sister with great trepidation. He finally saw her waiting for him in a mauve overcoat and a large purple hat through the window of one of the station’s waiting rooms.

When Miss Violet Parr got up and walked out of the waiting room, Leopold’s walk turned into a sprint as he finally reached Violet and hugged her tightly in a collision of joy.

Violet pushed hard against his force not to fall on her back. She kissed him on the cheek and whispered. “Really Leopold, this show of affection can do with some self-restraint!”

“Two years in France…” Leopold replied, “…haven’t changed you a bit!”

“I know better than to let the French freely mold me to their pleasing!” Violet Parr huffed in a mock of indignation. Then she turned her gaze to a young girl standing next to her looking curiously and cautiously at Leopold. “…but I am afraid I can’t say the same about young Isabella.”

Leopold looked at his young niece in utter astonishment: Isabella was a pretty little thing with curiously mixed features. At such a young age, her skin looked like a yellowish tanned shade of ivory. She had long light brown hair, hazel eyes and a serious look of disapproval on her face.

...

Joey woke up quite early in the morning. Being a heavy drinker lately, he usually hardy ever got up before noon, yet sleeping anywhere else but in his bed made him uncomfortable. He was pleasantly surprised noticing now that the small ferry had quite a lot of equipment considering its reduced size, including also a small bathroom. He took a shower and shaved, put on a better suit and went up onshore.

Upon having a coffee and sharing a large sandwich with Pierre, who now seemed to enjoy hanging around him, Joey left the small restaurant on the river bank and went out for a morning walk on the streets of London.

While strolling around aimlessly looking at the people and studying the surroundings, he finally ended up in a small square. Somewhere in a corner a few market stalls were exposing what seemed to be a toys exhibition. With a simple man’s curiosity, he approached the small crowd gathered around them.

Suddenly he noticed Pierre had just departed from near his foot aiming directly to a little girl and starting to sniff her head to toe upon reaching her. The kid raised her hand and slowly patted him on the head, saying something in what seemed to be…French: “Quel beau chiot!”

Bane was amazed and somehow touched by the image he was looking at. The little girl was smiling kindly at this otherwise dreadful animal, which was treating her with the gentleness of a pussycat. He took a better look at the child. A long light brown hair was framing a sweet face covered in ivory skin and she had the sweetest pair of round hazel eyes. Somehow her traits looked familiar, but Bane couldn’t pinpoint exactly who they reminded him of.

After playing a bit with Pierre’s ears, the girl said again something in French with the same crystalline voice: “Assoyez-vous.” At that, Pierre suddenly assumed a sitting position.

“Damn!” mumbled Bane. “This dog actually DOES understand French!”

The little girl laughed in content. Pierre continued sniffing her and finally ended his analysis by licking the girl’s cheek once.

“Horrid!” came another child voice from somewhere behind her, as she was laughing again while wiping her face with the bottom of her dress.

Bane pointed his eyes to where the second voice came from and noticed another little girl, seeming to him even more familiar than the first one. She had dark hair, her face showing soft yet chiseled features drawn onto a light olive complexion, marked elegantly by a pair of deep dark eyes. As she encountered Bane’s look she was quickly overcome by the usual shyness of a child and hid herself behind her mother’s vivid purple dress. The woman had her back turned towards Bane, so he couldn’t see her face.

Catching a glimpse of the first little girl playing with Pierre, she quickly turned around to her: “Isabelle, please stop that at once. It does not become you to play with street animals.” With an elegant move she adjusted her large violet hat in order to protect herself better from the morning sun. “And please speak in English” She added.

She didn’t notice Joey, but he got a good look at his face. For a moment he was astonished, looking at her and the back and forth at the two little girls: “Violet Parr!?! Twins?” He quickly regained his thoughts and smiled. The sight of Miss Parr with her usual tight attitude in such a normal and enchanting posture of a mother with her children in the middle of a toy market was simply a delight for him. He put his hands in his pockets and assumed a straight posture, raising his chin a bit in a slightly mocking position. He spoke loud and clear:

“Why…what a ‘strange coincidence’ to stumble upon your delightful presence right here on the streets of London, Miss Parr! Seen anything interesting on the stalls?”

Violet’s eyes clearly showed she was startled by his appearance, but as expected, she quickly regained her control over her attitude and in a second she posed again as her confident, classy and elegant self. She pondered a bit on how she should handle Bane. She did not have either good thoughts or bad in regard of this man, but his rough manners and appearance were not reaching exactly up to her standards, nor were they on her liking. She finally raised her chin up a bit and replied…

“Why, Mr. Bane…”

Miss Violet Parr was truly and utterly astonished.

She had never truly envisaged the possibility of meeting Joseph Bane in London, or for that matter, ever again let alone Leinster Square. Miss Parr felt that Mr. Bane was truly the embodiment of the remarkable/interesting character you come across but once in life and once lost never to be found again.

Violet was truly caught off guard when she heard him speak. Even though it was probably silly for her to feel that way, she could not but help feeling very exposed in her current domestic position. On instinct she smiled politely whilst pondering how to handle a surprise meeting with Mr. Bane after two years of a very vague encounter with him.

Violet searched her memory for what little information she had on Joey Bane and then suddenly recalled the words of Patricia Crab: ‘… a retired Boxer turned detective... American, from New York, new money, never lived the refined lifestyle before… harmless enough...’ Miss Parr finally decided for herself that if Joey Bane was not much good to her, he was by the same token seemingly harmless. She raised her chin a bit before she began talking.

“Why, Mr. Bane… Heavens… If it isn’t the delightfully mysterious Joseph Bane…” Violet felt that a compliment was never a bad way to start a conversation, but she also firmly believed that a starter compliment must be the only one. “It is really good to see you again after all this time.”

Violet extended her hand in greeting and to her surprise Joey Bane took it in his hand and kissed it. “Likewise my dear lady… I see your family has grown since we last met… quite unexpectedly so.”

Violet bit her lower lip and looked to her two daughters before answering. “Trust me when I tell you, Sir, that the biggest surprise was mine.”

“As I’m sure it was your husband’s.” Mr. Bane asked expectantly.

“It would… would it not…” Violet decided to give an answerless answer.

Mr. Bane stood there silently for a moment taking in Violet’s reaction to his last comment. Just as he seemed to be deducing something from Violet’s vague answer, she quickly spoke again.

“This is Isabella.” She rested her right hand on the head of the light-brown haired girl who spoke French. “Though it would probably please her more if you called her Isabelle as the French do… And this is Victoria, the apple of my eyes.” She rested her left hand on the head of the dark-haired girl who seemed to very much resemble Miss Parr herself. She then addressed the girls. “Girls, this is Mr. Joseph Bane: A good friend of mother’s.”

Isabella was quick to take initiative. “Je m’apelle Isabelle.” She then turned towards her sister. “Ca c'est ma soeur, elle s’apelle Victoire.”

Victoria looked to her mother. When Miss Parr nodded to her in assurance, she turned to Mr. Bane and nodded politely.

Joey went down to Isabella’s level. “Enchante.” He smiled.

Isabella giggled delightfully.

“Don’t encourage her, Mr. Bane.” Violet sighed. “I just cannot imagine why the French have had such influence on her.”

Joey laughed. “Well, Miss Parr, it seems to me that you have finally met your match.”

Violet’s face flushed before she nodded in defeat. “Indeed.”

“Seen anything interesting in the stalls?” Joey reiterated his earlier question.

“As a matter of fact I have. I am getting a doll for Victoria and what seems to be a puzzle for Isabella. Excuse me for a minute whilst I make my payment.”

“That’s no problem, my dearest Miss Parr, I must be on my way anyway.”

“We actually were on our way to brunch if you would like to join us… with your friend.” She added looking directly at Pierre who had been eyeing her curiously throughout the conversation. “He is yours is he not?”

“Well, I…”

“Well either way he is in dire need of a bath. I know where we can stop by for his grooming before we make our way to brunch.”

“Miss Parr…”

“I insist.” Miss Parr smiled. ‘Especially if he is to be in our company any longer…' she finished to her self.

Two hours later…

Violet sat next to her daughter Victoria opposite Joey Bane, Isabella and Pierre, who slept at the foot of Isabella, in a café off Queensway.

Pierre, having been bathed, groomed, fed and vaccinated to Miss Parr’s liking, was now sleeping soundly for what seemed to be the first time in a decade, easily resisting Isabella’s many attempts of waking him.

“I see Isabella isn’t dressed in a shade of purple Miss Parr.” Joey spoke half-mockingly.

“Trust me I try,” sighed Violet. “She resists the very colour. If it is anything to close to Violet she would not wear it, which is why she always prefers its opposite colour of Yellow. She is quite content to wear mustard or gold.”

Bane smiled. Then a pressing question suddenly struck him and he wondered whether it would be gentlemanly of him to ask it in light of the current events. He then wondered why he started caring so much about his image as the gentleman in Miss Parr’s company.

He glanced at Violet Parr. She nodded politely.

Makensie arrived in London. Finally. She had decided to bring her son with her, at last minute, because, as much as she adored her dear friend, Ms Cevasco, she couldn't stand the thought of leaving her little boy behind.

As the train came to a stop, she stood up, helping her son with his things, as she grabbed her own.

They exited the train, and looked around.

Cody was engrossed in a small stone on the ground, as she said, "Come on Cody, give me your hand"

He slid his little hand in her own, looked up at her with the sweetest smile, which melted her heart.

"You are just like your Father", Makensie said, grinning.

"Daddyyyyy!", he said, with a squeel.

She tapped his nose with her finger, and said, "You will be seeing him soon, darling"

She walked along the sidewalk, and called for a cab.

"Take me to the nearest hotel. The best of the best please", she said, as her and her son got in.

*******

Few miles later, they were in front of a rich looking hotel.

"Thank you, kind sir", she said, as she paid for the fare, and gave him a generous tip.

As they got out, Cody looked at the man, and said, "Thank you kind sir", in mock of his Mom.

Chuckling, she ruffled his hair, and said, "Come on"

There was a restaurant beside the hotel, and she looked over.

She took a second look, and said, "Hmmm, no, that cant be Violet, and Mr Joey Bane?" She remembered him back on the cruise.

Cody tugged at her coat, and said, "Come on Mommy"

"Hold on dear. I think I see a dear friend, and two little ones, you may want to meet", she said, scooping him up in her arms.

As they entered the door of the restaurant, she put Cody down, and straightened his coat up.

Makensie always dressed Cody like a little gentleman. He actually looked like a miniature Clift Garrett, only had his Mom's big eyes, and her winning smile. The charm, and personality was all his Dad's though.

She approached the table, as Violet looked up.

"Well, Makensie!!! What a pleasant surprise, my dear friend", she said, standing up to give her a big hug.

"....and THIS must be, Cody James", she said, stooping down to Cody's level, and smiling.

"Pleased to meet you ma'am", he said, in the tiniest voice.

Makensie's eyes grew big ,as she smiled at how polite he was. She never has been so proud.

Violet seemed to melt, as she said, "Well, likewise, little man. You look so much like your beautiful Mom when you smile, but oh do you look like your father. Quite the charmer, too"

She stood up and smiled at Makensie, and said, "I have two little ones I would like you to meet"

As Makensie walked closer to the table, Joey Bane raised his eyes, looking up at her.

He stood, as a gentleman would when a lady approaced, and said, "Makensie Brewer! We meet again"

"Yes, so we do. Nice to see you again, Mr Bane", she said, with a slight smile.

He nods, and sits back down.

Violet pointed to two beautiful little girls.

"Twins?", Makensie said. "I don't believe it!"

Violet smiles, with a slight chuckle, and said, "I couldn't believe it either. This is Isabella and Victoria. Both of you, I would like you to meet my dear friend, Makensie, who will be Auntie Mak to you, and this charming little boy, is Auntie Mak's son, your brother"

The two girls exchanged glances, but both remained polite and in order, as they smiled.

Cody hid behind behind his Mom's coat, as Violet chuckled, and said, "If he is anything like his Father, that shyness wont last long"

They laughed, as Makensie said, "Violet, your daughters are gorgeous"

"Thank you, Makensie", Violet said, with a nod.

Violet said, "Would you care to join us?"

"Oh no, thank you. We got us a hotel right next door, and we really need to be going", Makensie said.

Violet frowns, and said, "I won't have that. You will stay at my home, and I won't take no for an answer. It's been a long time since we've visited, and I want my girls, and your boy to get to know one another, so, meet me back here in 30 minutes"

"If you insist, Violet. Thank you very much", Makensie said.

Looking at Joey Bane, Makensie smiled quietly, and said, "Good seeing you again"

Joey nodded, and said, "Likewise. I'm sure I will see you again"

She lifted her chin a bit, nods, then walks on, with Cody in tow.

Makensie walks out, sighs, and said to herself, "Clift, I wish you were here"

She didn't know why that feeling suddenly came over her, but, that's how it always was with her and Clift. She loved him, she always would.

Makensie saw a dog, a rather clean looking dog actually, sitting outside the restaurant, looking very mannerly.

Cody pointed, and said, "Dog"

"Yes, that's a dog", Makensie said.

The dog watched Cody, as he stared back, pointing, and smiling.

"Come on, Cody James. We have to go get our things in the room. "We are staying at Aunt Violet's house", she said.

He excitedly ran through the hotel doors, as Makensie hollered after, "Cody, don't run! Get back here with Mom!"

She groans, as she picks her pace up, chasing after him.

In his excitement, Cody James ran right into a strange man. He bumped into him and just as he was about to fall on his back he was held and picked by the strange man.

Cody had bit his tongue in the collision and now had a slight lisp. "Sowwy Siw..." Then as he recognized the man he shrieked in delight. "Dadddyyyyy!!!!"

"And how's my little champ doing?" Clift smiled in warm delight. He truly loved his son.

"Gwweat daddy!"

"What are you doing in London? And where's mommy?"

"She's wight hewe."

Mak finally reached Clift gasping and out of breath. Clift turned to her holding Cody in his arms and she shrugged. "Uncontrollable. Just like his dad."

"Mak! What brings you both to London." Clift kissed her and put his hand around her waist. She released herself for him grip. "Clift..." She said rather quietly. "We're in the lobby of a hotel."

"Can't a man hug his family?" Clift shrugged. "Here, where are your bags? I'll help you up to your room. Come on Cody, we men must carry the bags for mommy."

Cody immediately started tugging at a heavy suitcase. "Yes Siw."

"What can't he pronounce his R's?!" Mak shrieked.

"Don't worry Mak, I think he just bit his tongue. You're such a worrier." Clift said as he was grabbing a suitcase when Mak suddenly stopped him.

She looked at him and said. "That's okay Clift... We're not staying at a hotel. We're staying at Violet's..."

"What?" Clift Garrett was suddenly alert. "What Violet? Our Violet?"

"Yes, OUR Violet," Mak rolled her eyes. "Clift please do not over react and contain yourself, but Violet is in London."

'So the rumors are true' Clift thought.

"Clift, please do not overreact. You know Vi... She is a strong willed person and has a mind of her own. She felt safe in France as I explained to you so she stayed there..."

"Mak, stop making excuses for her... She kept me away from my only daughter for two years now. Plus why would she feel safe in France?"
