Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

I glanced up at the large clock again. Each tick and each tock drove my mind farther back into the past. A past I had left behind ten long years before. A past I was facing now.

But first came the waiting. I hate waiting.

I glanced around the station again. Deserted. Not a soul in sight. Strange, considering that this used to be a bustling train station ten years ago. I pulled the letter out of my shoulder bag to look at it again.

"Anais, Be at Winchester Station, Platform 7 at 23.00, 2/15. ~Lisette"

Lisette. Could I really face her after all this time? Well, I was about to find out. With a shaking hand, I shoved the letter deep into my bag. Where was she? It was 23.17. Lisette had never been late in the twenty plus years I had known her. What was going on?

"What?" asked Vulkie.

"Oh, sorry. I said, 'Yes, but I do not speak French well.' He asked if I could understand if if I heard it, or read it, which I do much better at. I just can not speak it. So, he started telling me something to tell Poppa, and gave me a note, written in French. Just then, the doors of GG burst open, and the man who had been talking to me pushed me down beneath the table, told me to exit through the secret door behind his booth, and went out to the main part of the restaurant. There was a sudden burst of gunfire, and I escaped. I ran home, to tell Poppa, but he was not there. I thought I had been followed, so I left the note to him, and one from me, took my money and left. I didn't want them to hurt my family."

((Posting rather out of character for this on. I'm usually very sweet... heh... yeah, right... LOL))

Tony Masters sat on top of the old tenement. The white bricks had been stained with dirt, the windows boarded, and the building chained. That look was normal for this neighborhood; it had been wiped out by the depression.

Tony sighed as he peered over the ledge of the building. He pondered the world, eventually coming to his nickname. He was called "Ace" by everyone; he gained the name for his proficiency in shooting.

There they were. Finally. Ace had been sitting there for two hours. He had only one mission: Take out Anais Nin.

Too bad he couldn't make a carbomb. Could've taken all four of 'em that quickly.

The foursome exited the giant theater. Ace could hardly tell which one was Anais, since there were two women, both who looked very much alike.

The man there was helping one of them into the car, and Ace couldn't hit her, so he prayed that it was the woman about to sit in the passenger seat. Just as she opened the door, Ace pulled the trigger.

But, just as Ace pulled the trigger, a pigeon went poo-poo on his head. He
reflexively jerked his hand, hitting the woman in the forearm.

"Vulkie!" He heard from below. Damn! He shot the wrong one! He raced downstairs and out the door, pistol drawn. The car was speeding away, and Ace fired 3 shots towards it. One shot shattered the rear window, but it didn't appear to hit any occupants.

Ace looked over at the theater. To his surprise, they had left the woman he shot laying on the street, gripping her arm in pain.

Wonderful people, he thought. He ran off back behind the old tenement, wiped off his guns, threw them in the window, and took off his black sweatshirt.

As I was just going for the passenger seat, because Joseph knew where to head next,I heard a shot and then I felt a burning pain. My arm was hit. ''Vulkie!'' Joseph said. ''GO!'' I screamed'' Just go and bring them to safety Joseph!''. I crawled of pain and just when the man who shot me got out,Joseph drove off. I saw Anais's face on the side window, screaming for me. The man fired three shots and I heard the rear window breaking. The man ran off,and came back for me.

I passed out for a few moments and when I got back to reality,I layed on a couch and saw the man. He sat in an armchair, playing with his gun. I couldn't do much, but asked who he was. ''The name is Tony, doll,Tony Masters. And you must be Vulkie. Ah,have I heard a lot of you. Not so good from La Cosa Nostra lately, since you ''betrayed'' them,by not killing Anais.''

''Why you tried to kill me?'' I asked. The man let a laugh out. ''Not you, silly girl,Anais. Cosa Nostra hired me,since you ''failed'' to do the job and ''betrayed'' them.''

The man stood up and gave me a glass of water. When I drank all of it up,I didn't feel well. The last thing I heard was ''Buena Sera Vulkie''(Buena Sera means goodnight) and the front door slammed while Tony went off. After that, everything went black....

He quickly disposed of it and put on a pair of glasses. He then peered out to the street.

The woman was still gripping her arm in pain, although she was now sitting up. He ran over to her.

"Oh my God, ma'am, are you okay?" He shouted.
"I've been shot!" She moaned.
"Listen, I'll go call the police." There was a gas station a block away, at which he told the attendant to call the police. He then went back to the woman.

"Let's move you out of the street."
"Okay, I think I can stand up."

She reached out and grabbed Ace's hand. He then led her over to the curb to sit down.

"By the way, the names Ted." Ace lied.
"Nice to meet you. Call me Vulkie." She said in pain.

Not long after, a police car sped up. Then an ambulance.

Later, Ace was being questioned by the police. Didn't matter though. Theodore Anderson, Ace's new alias, was a real person with a real address. Of course, he was no longer breathing, and no one knew that, but... well... it worked out quite well. Since Ace's original plan didn't work, his second would. Anais Nin and her friends were about to be helped by the very people who wanted to kill them.

"WE CAN'T LEAVE VULKIE!" I screamed.

"Yes, we can, and we have to, Anais. Do you know who they are trying to kill?" Joseph asked me sternly as Lisette held me in the car.

The instant his words sank in, my face went pale. "Me. They are trying to kill me," I whispered.

"I'm sorry, Ana, I didn't know quite what I was getting you into. If Father hadn't-" Lisette was trying to calm me down.

I interrupted her, "Why do you call Poppa 'Father', Ette? You never used to."

Lisette's face turned stormy. "It is a long pointless story that we have no time for right now," she clipped.

"Anais, we need to know what you know, so we can figure out why La Cosa Nostra wants to kill you," Joseph said in a reasonable voice.

"Well, we know it's because of that stupid Priceless Statuette of Bha Zhing Ze, don't we? And the paper. Is the paper the one that man gave me?" I asked Lisette.

"No. It is the one you wrote in code for Father telling him where the paper is that unlocks the statue. Which is probably in another code. And we both know how horrible I am at cracking codes. That was your talent," Lisette had gone back to being surly.

"Well, I'm not sure I still can...it has been ten years, you know," I winced the moment the words were out of my mouth. Wrong thing to say.

Lisette glared at me. "Yes, I realize, Anais. More so than, you I think. It took me nine to track you down."

"You were looking for me for nine years?" I whispered, stunned.

"Yes."

Just then, Joseph braked suddenly, and my head flew forward and hit the seat in front of me and then flew in the opposite direction and hit the window behind me. The broken glass cut my head, and the last thing I heard was, "How often does this woman faint?!" before everything went black.
