No charm = impossible cases

I've hit a bit of a wall it seems. I have no persuasive skills at all to get people to talk more when they clam up, so when I try an intermediate case I can only ask people one question before they stop talking. Which means alibi or further suspects but never both, making the cases impossible to solve (generally I ask alibi first so keep ending up with only two suspects, both with real alibis).

*And* my skill point rewards for easy cases has reduced to zero (is this experience based?) so saving up for sweet talk or intimidate is also not possible any more. Is there anyway out of this or will I have to start again with a new detective?
