"Mak, I know youaren't feeling easy about this..." Ace started.
"No, no... he's doing the right thing..." Mak stammered.
"The right thing isn't always right for everyone." Ace said bluntly.
"What do you mean by that?" Mak inquired.
"Well, look at it this way." Ace explained, "Violet doesn't really love Clift, and visa versa. Yet, they have to marry each other, which is making it quite hard on you, for you love Clift. It's all a weird, Shakesperean melodrama to me."
"I guess you're right." Mak said, "The only person this will really benefit is the baby."
"Won't it be ironic if it was just a fluke and Violet isn't really pregnant?"
"Oh, don't even say such a thing!" Mak yelled, "I'd really hate for this to happen to find out that it didn't have to!"

Makensie felt suddenly dizzy, as Ace guided her to the bench.

"Here, sit down. See? Getting yourself all upset, and with your busy schedule, you are wearing yourself down", Ace said.

She looked at him, and started chuckling.

"What?", he said, with a slight smile.

"First time, I think, that I've ever see you serious", she said, laughing.

Ace chuckled, and said, "...and yet, you still laugh" They laughed together, as she felt rather sickish.

Growing serious, she said, "I wouldn't wish on Violet that she not really be pregnant. I mean, I know she didn't choose for this to happen, but, I wouldn't wish that she not be pregnant either....I just..." She stopped there.

Ace really liked Makensie, and he knew she liked him too. He just wishes that he could some how turn her interests a little more toward him, but, he was never good at these sorts of things, and that is why he dove so hard into his work.

"We best go back in now. Time to congratulate the bride and groom", she said, smiling.

"You sure you are ok?", he said.

She nods, and says, "Yes, Im sure"

They walk back inside, and she looks at Violet, and how beautiful she looks, then to Clift, who was, as always, very handsome.

Tears came instantly to her eyes, but she quickly batted them away, as she looks at Ace, and says, "Ready to do this?"

"Are YOU?", he asks. She takes a deep breath, and nods.

Walking up to Violet, she gives her friend a hug, and says, "Best wished to you, my friend" Violet remains hugging Makensie, as she says in her ear, so noone else can listen, "Things will all work out Mak. I know this is hard on you" In return Makensie smiled, and gave her a friendly squeeze, and looked to Clift.

Ace shook his hand, tapped his shoulder, and said, "Congrats, married guy" Clift nod, smiles, and says, "Thanks, my man"

Ace steps back, and walks to Violet, as Makensie slowly walks to Clift.

"Well, you are now a married man, Mr Garrett", she said, smiling softly, as tears welled up uncontrollably.

Clift held her hands, and pulled her to him, as they hugged one another.

"You know it wouldn't be like this, Mak, under normal circumstances", he whispered.

She kissed his cheek, and said, "I'm happy that you made the right decision. You have a wonderful, beautiful wife....and I wish the best of luck to both of you" Her voice trembled, and she quickly walked away, before her tears spilled out uncontrollably.

Clift tried to say something, but it was too late, she was out the door.

Violet looked at Clift, as he looked back at her, then they became swarmed with family, and their laughter of happiness.

Outside, Makensie sat on the bench, more emotional than normal. She couldn't figure it out.

She buried her face in her hands, and cried. Ace walks out, and finds her there, as he walks up and sits down beside her.

He pulls her to him, and hugs her, letting her get her emotions out, as a gentleman would do.

"I'm such a damn cry baby. Look at me, I'm such an idiot", she said, through sobs, her eyes red, and nose stuffed up.

Ace remains holding her, as he says, "Anyone ever tell you how sexy you look when your nose is all red, and your eyes a mix of blue and red, and that stuffed up voice? That is really hot, Mak"

Through her sobs, she laughed, and said, "You are such a dork!" Then, she laughed, and cried all together, as she clang on to him, her face buried in his shoulder.

"Come on. Lets go get a bite to eat huh?", he said, gently pulling her back.

She nods, wiping her face, and says, "After I clean myself up here"

They stand up, he put his arm around her , as they walked down the sidewalk.

What in the world is coming over me, Makensie thinks.

A small wedding reception was held at the private residence of Violet’s parents just off the Kensington High Street.

The main hall was showered with vibrant bouquets of violets and lilacs and everyone was mingling and chatting the evening away.

There was some dancing as well: Clift Garrett danced with his sister, Miss Vivienne Garrett and Violet’s mother, Lady Madhuri Parr. When he approached Violet for a dance, she politely declined and asked him for a word.

When they were alone, Violet spoke softly but firmly. “Mr. Garrett, Miss Brewer is sitting all alone with only Mr. Masters comforting her. She is putting a very strong face for the sake of my friendship and your love by coming to both our wedding ceremony and reception. The least you can do is afford her a few minutes and comfort her at this time instead of dancing with the guests.”

“But Violet, you told me it was important to keep up appearances throughout the wedding!” Clift was shocked at Violet’s sudden caring and concern about Makensie Brewer.

“I did.” Violet nodded. “I stand by it, but you must understand that ours is a marriage of expedience, whereas Makensie truly has feelings for you that run very deep.”

Clift nodded. “I understand… I shall go and speak to her at once.”

Violet smiled and then hugged Clift Garrett very tightly. “Thank you for doing this… It means the world to me that my self-respect before my dearest father and brothers was maintained.”

Clift bowed his head slightly. “I did nothing out of duty my dearest Miss Parr.”

With that, they both went back into the wedding reception with bright, dazzling smiles.

Clift walked up to where Mak and Ace sat on a plush sofa in the corner. They were both talking with drinks and two plates of canopies in their hands.

Ace got up as Clift approached, but Clift put a strong arm on his shoulder and made sit right back.

"Stay just where you are Ace, you are practically family now." He said.

"I am?" Ace wondered.

"Yes, after all, Vivienne and Scarlett are so close they're practically like sisters, which makes us the best of pals." Clift winked.

He sat with them then turned to Makensie. "You okay Mak?" he put his hand on hers.

"Yes, I fine Clift..." she smiled. "Congratulations on your wedding."

Clift smiled to her and she smiled back knowingly.

He then turned to Ace and spoke. "Violet and I need to go on our honeymoon. But it won't be a real honeymoon, it will be a long trip, just to keep up appearances, and we want you two to come along... After all, it would be pretty dull without Mak to brighten it up, and Ace's sweet presence along."

He then grabbed both Mak and Ace and pulled them to him in rough play.

While he was fooling around with the two he got a very serious glare from Violet to knock it off and continue to keep appearances at the wedding reception.

Makensie chuckles, then smiles at Violet, and winks. Keeping him in line already, she thinks. Violet grins, as if to know exactly what she was thinking.

Ace says, straightening his jacket, "Us...go on the honeymoon WITH you two? Now that is different"

Clift looks at Makensie, then back at Ace, and says, "Well, we've all been together about everywhere, it would be weird not having you two around"

"We accept....well, I do, anyway, accept the invitation. Besides, this will be good for all of us", Makensie said.

Ace nods, and says, "As she started to say, WE accept the invite, and look forward to us all enjoying your not-really-a-honeymoon"

Violet walks up, with her always dazzling smile, and says to Clift, "I take it that you invited Mak and Ace along with us?"

Nodding, as he looked at Makensie, he said, "I did"

"Splendid! This is going to be alot of fun! Besides, Makensie and I will have alot of catching up to do with one another, and shopping,of course"

Makensie grins, and says, "Definitely catching up , relaxation, and shopping"

Ace smiles, and says, "For us men....drinking, and goofing off" Clift said, "Here! Here!"

"Well, if you all will excuse me, I must go to the restroom. This water Ive been drinking, is going right through me", Makensie said, smiling.

They all nod, as Clift watches her walk away.

Ace watches Clift , then looks over at Makensie as well, as she makes her to the bathroom.

Walking into the restroom, she thinks about how wonderful Violet and Clift's wedding was, and the gorgeous reception, and how much she is looking forward to the little trip away. She has grown quite fond of their close little circle they have become, and is excited to spend a few days of peacefulness with them.

As she starts to walk to the bathroom stall, she gets dizzy, and quickly holds onto the sink, that was near -by. Looking at herself in the mirror, she thinks, Oh no...this cant be happening. She makes a metal note to call her doctor in the morning, to find out whats been wrong with her, and to hope her fear hasnt come true.

She takes water and splashes it on her face, goes restroom, washes her hands, then heads back out to her friends.

"There you are. Was beginning to wonder where you went", Ace said, as he lightly put his hand on her back.

Violet had went to talk to some family members, as Clift was standing beside Ace.

She smiled at Ace, then looked at CLift, as he was already looking at her.

He thinks, She looks so beautiful, and yet, something is different about her, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Ace pondered his new married friends. Ace liked Clift immensely, but Clift had his flaws. Apparently, one of them was a... well, shall we call it a self-control issue?

Violet... sort of... scared Ace a little. She was very, very, very nice, and very, very, very very, very polite. It sort of freaked him out. He had never been near such fine and royal like company, which made him a bit uncomfortable. But, knowing that Violet was in fact a very charming person helped.

He couldn't help but wonder what Violet's parents thought of this very... moral... wedding. However, Mak interrupted his thoughts.

"Ace?" She said, "Why are you just sitting here staring at the fireplace? You do realize there's no fire..."
"Oh, I was just off in daydreamland, I suppose."
"Oh, I do that." She sat down, "My favorit dream..."

They chatted a bit about daydreams and the like, until Clift danced with Mak. They had a lively conversation while they danced, but Ace didn't notice.

For, soon after they went out on the dance floor, Madhuri Parr, the bride's mother, approached Ace.

"Oh, hello." Ace said as she came near, "I'm To..." Ace paused, remembering who's company he was enjoying, "er... I'm Anthony Masters."
"Madhuri." She said coldly, "Madhuri Parr."
Ace kissed her hand. A cold look never left her face, as though if she showed any other emotion, she would commit a deadly sin.
"I admire your daughter quite a lot." Ace said mechanically.
"Yes, she has talked about you quite extensively..." She paused as she looked him over, "Not at all the man she described... Ace, I believe she called you?"
"Oh, that's my nickname." Ace explained, "All my friends call me that. You may too, if you wish."
"Thank you, Ace." She finally showed some inkling of a smile, "Now, if you'll excuse me, I musn't neglect the other guests."
"Yes, of course. Perhaps we could have a chat later."
"Yes, I believe I would like that." She then stepped away lightly, the cold look returning.

Ace finally took a breath, until he noticed some commotion on the dance floor. Mak appeared to be fussing quite a bit, screaming at the groom. Flustered, she stormed out the door of the hall and out onto the sidewalk.

Ace knew this must have been the grand finale. At least, he hoped. He followed her outside, and, between sobs, she explained what happened...

Between sobs, she managed to get out....."and...and he said that I look different" Ace scrunched his face up, and says, "Look different? Well, why you crying?" He pulled her into a hug, feeling very confused.

She sniffs, wipes her face, and said, "I know what that means when men say that" He softly smiles, and says, "What?" She pulls back, and says, "I'm fat!!"

Ace chuckles, and says, "Fat? You're not fat, Mak!" Wiping her nose with her hand, as he hands her a tissue from his pocket, she said, "Well I FEEL fat....so that had to be it"

Makensie couldn't figure out why she was so emotional. She never acts like this.

Clift comes walking out, as Ace turns toward him.

"Mak...I....I"m sorry. Whats wrong?", Clift asked, with great concern.

Ace excused himself, more baffled than he ever was.

Suddenly feeling quite embarrassed, she said, "Oh it is nothing. I'm just emotional these days, I've been dizzy, not feeling well...I dont know what my problem is"

Clift thinks, I have an idea, but, says, "Have you gone to the doctor?"

"I'm making an appointment in the morning", she said.

They looked at each other, both coming to the same conclusion.

"I can't be. No. This can't be happening", she said.

Clift said, "It wouldn't be good timing...but, I wouldn't regret it,Mak"

Looking at him, tears welled up, and she fell into a round of sobs again.

He went to her, and put his arms around him, then said, "Can you tell me why you ran out crying?"

".....because u said I look different, and I know u meant fat", she said, crying.

He laughs affectionately, and says, "I didn't mean that, Mak. You are beautiful, and you're not fat! I meant that you have a slight glow about you, you just look different...in a good way"

She pulled back, and said, "This is totally rediculous. I've cried more now than I think I have my whole entire life"
