Ace flicked Clift on the shoulder, "You can have the purple one, I'll take on Miss Roo-beh." He said smiling. Before Clift could get a word in, Ace was approaching the table. Clift grunted in frustration, a lot of which was the fact that he still couldn't choose between the girls. That, and the fact that Ace had apparently chosen for him.

"Well, don't you ladies look scrumptiously fabulous tonight?" Ace chuckled as he took a seat, "And me in a flanel shirt, jeans, and sneakers."
The girls smirked as an obviously agitated Clift Garrett sat down.

Assuming it was about Vivienne, Mak spoke up, "Don't worry about Vivvy, Clift! Thanks to the info you got out of Alice, the police will most certainly find her."
"Thanks." Clift smiled at her, even though that wasn't actually the reason.

"Now, really, girls, I do have somewhat of a bone to pick with you." Ace told them, trying to act serious. But, even Violet, who barely knew Ace, could tell that he was smirking under that face."
"What?" Mak laughed.
"You said this would be, and I quote, a 'quick lunch'." Ace started smiling, "Now, not that you don't look awfully pleasing to a man's eye, we didn't exactly expect evening gowns."
"Oh, we're going to a party after this." Mak informed.
"No, no, dear," Violet corrected, "We are going to a pah-ty. If we were going to a birthday, we would say, PAR-ty. But, this is a swanky little shindig, and that constitutes a PAH-ty." There were laughs all around at that.
"So, watcha-goin' to?"
"The Annual London Detective Ball." Violet said.
"Oh, I was invited to that. Couldn't get a date." Clift spoke up.
"No!" Ace played, "You? You? YOU? Yeah, neither could I." More laughing ensued.
"Well, we couldn't either." Violet told them, "But we're going anyway. Would you like to be our dates?"
Ace acted surprised, "Mua? Mua? Oui Oui, Madame!"

Mak chuckled, "I call Mr. French guy here." Even though she wasn't too keen to the idea, she had to go along now that Violet brought it up. And she didn't want to go with Clift.
"Then, I'll take Mr. Garrett."
"Now, wait a minute!" Clift piped up, "Don't divvy us up as though you were slicing a pie! Do allow us to ask you like gentlemen?"
"Oh, we're sorry." Mak smiled, situating herself in her chair.
"Madame moiselle," Ace knelt, "May I take the liberty of asking you..." He paused to kiss her hand, "to the ball."
"Why, certainly!" Mak accepted.
"Thanks!" Ace voiced nasally, springing back into his chair. More laughter. Clift cringed, however, when Ace kissed Mak's hand. But now, it was his turn.
"Mon ami," Clift also kissed Violet's hand, "May I escort you to the ball as well?" Clift also kissed Violet's hand.
"Of course, Mr. Garrett." Violet smiled.
"Well, then we need to get ready!" Clift stood up.
"Yes," Ace agreed, "If we're going to take you to a ball tonight, we'd better rent some monkey suits."
"Of course. Will your cab pick us up at 6:30 to be there by 7:00?" Mak asked.
"Um... I guess you said it!"
"Wondeful! Then, I guess we'll see you then!" Violet shouted as they walked out the door.
***************
"I wonder got into Violet." Clift said as he and Ace rode in the cab towards a tuxedo rental, "No way would she normally volunteer a date with anyone, much less me."
"Well, we're still pretty well-off in this situation," Ace told him, "Escorting two lovely ladies to a ball that we will surely have fun at."
"True." Clift said bluntly, "I'm just not sure if I'd rather be with Mak or Violet."
"I understand." Ace said, "And I was just kidding about Mak being mine, I swear."
"I know," Clift replied, "and don't worry about it."
"But," Ace explained, "I think I do prefer Mak over Violet."

Clift found this statement appropriate. After all, Ace and Violet were nothing like each other. But, Clift still seemed to want Mak, and couldn't help but feel some competition.

***

The night was heavily alive when Clift Garrett, Tony Masters, Makensie Brewer and Violet Parr entered the Great Peacock Theatre at High Holborn Road, which had been refurbished into a Grand Hall for the evening soiree.

The whole event was actually hosted by the New Scotland Yard, the London Metropolitan Police, in honour of detectives all over. Leopold Parr, who had gotten his position back at the Yard, gave Violet and her friends special invites for the evening.

Violet and Clift were there representing the Sirens, Mak was there on account of Dawg Pound Investigations whilst Ace was representing the famed Hunter’s Academy.

As soon as they entered the lavishly decorated ballroom, Leopold greeted Violet and her friends.

Violet turned to the gang, “Makensie, Tony, Clift… this is Leopold Parr, my elder brother and dare I say most favoured out of my siblings. He is Assistant to the Chief Inspector Devereux at the Yard… Leopold I present Miss Brewer, Mr. Masters and Mr. Garrett.”

Leopold immediately approached Makensie and took her hand up to his lips and lightly kissed it. “A pleasure Miss Brewer…” He then shook hands with the gentlemen and showed the quartet to their table at the center of the theatre hall.

Violet suddenly spotted Miss Rochelle, a beautiful Director at the Sirens in the distance, chatting with some friends.

Violet thought that the ever so luminous and hardworking Miss Rochelle must be here on a treasure hunt. “Excuse me,” she said to the troop, “I must go greet my Director at the Sirens… Clift would you like to join me in saying hello to Miss Rochelle?”

Clift nodded and got up with Miss Parr as the two walked towards Miss Rochelle.

Ace yawned then turned to Makensie. “Let’s dance, before I get too bored. May I have this dance?”

Makensie got up and nodded.

After all she was dressed for a spectacular night tonight.

Huglover had taken the trip to London to participate in the ball together with her dear Assistant, and husband.
It's so good that we get to see each other again, she said. The people at Wish are great, but it's nothing compared to being together with you. It's good to see you as well, Huglover's Assistant answered. I do miss you from time to time, even though the people at the Untouchables are great people.

Do you know anything about Tony?, Huglover asked. I wonder how his studies are going? Well, as a matter of fact, I did meet him some days ago, and it seemed like he had been caught up with some detective work...
We wanted so badly that he would get a decent job, like becoming a doctor or something. He got the brain to it. But, it seems like he is not really inspired with those studies. Huglover's Assistant was a bit disappointed.

Huglover replied. Well, we did not really want him to become detective, as we both know that job, and all the dangers it includes. But, on the other side, we cannot really blame him for ending up being like us. You remember when I led the syndicate, I had contacts and people all over the world, and it's not really strange for Tony to have picked up something. I guess he will be doing great.

Huglover's Assistant turned his head around and looked at the people. Hey, see, there he is. Together with that awsome lady in that red gown.

Oh, yea, I see him. He got that great charm from you, which can attract any woman. Wait? Ain't that the Makensie Brewer from Dawg Pound Investigation? Word tell that she is not the easiest fish to catch.

Huglover's Assistant answered, well, yes, she is an extraordinary nice lady, I can see so, but you know, there is only room for one woman in my heart, you. And, you look wonderful tonight as well.

Huglover smiled and hugged her Assistant, and whispered into his ear. I always knew that you were the one I would have as well. I have met many men that were attractive, but none like you.

Come, let's go to Tony, and greet him.

The couple went towards Ace, and as he noticed they were arriving, he said a quiet "Oh-o, they have found me. I hope they won't create any trouble."

Hi Tony. Are you here?

Yes, mom, I am a detective, and was invited. I have become really good at it too.

Weren't you supposed to become a doctor or something more safe?

But, mom, it was always detective I wanted to be. Besides, you may thank me that Scarlett was just found. I was the one who solved the mystery of her being nabbed.

Scarlett was nabbed? Oh, that was terrible. Why would anyone do something like that awful. She did not harm anyone. She was an actress, and that is not meant to be a dangerous job. Well, I am happy that you found her.

Mak looked a bit questioning at Ace, and said quietly: "YOU solved the mystery?" - Ace noticed the signal from Mak, and was quick to say: "But, it would have been impossible to solve the case if it had not been for very good help from my friend Makensie Brewer. Mom, Dad, meet Ms. Makensie Brewer from Dawg Pound Investigations. Makensie Brewer, my mom and dad; Huglover and Huglover's Assistant."

Huglover smiled at Makensie, and said: "Nice to meet you Ms. Brewer. I have heard about you. You have been in this game a long time, and are really skilled. The word about all your great work have gone around the globe." Then she adressed Ace, and said: "You need to be sure you behave at your best, having this kind of celeber company. You got the charm and toughness after your father, and in spite of your young age, you have the ability to not fail". "Oh, I think he got the smartness after his mother as well", Huglover's Assistant replied with a smile. "Just make sure that you take good care of yourself lad. You know, we don't know how much longer we will be here before we retire. You are on your own now. And, take good care of Scarlett too. I know you will do it"

With that Huglover's Assistant took his arm behind Huglover's back, and led her away, so that the young ones could have a nice time entertaining themselves.

The couple smiled at each other. Now, we need to leave him alone. He have become a good lad. Perhaps he will come visit us one time when we have settled down after our retirement? They hugged each other, and went to the dance floor together. This was going to be a wonderful night together.

After the song ended, a slow song came on, and Makensie started to walk off.

Ace grabs Makensie's arm, and says, "Not so fast, pretty lady. I'm not passing up an opportunity to get close to ya. What kind of man would I be?" He winked, as she willingly walked back, and placed her hand on his shoulder, and her other in his hand, as they began dancing slowly.

"You parents seem like very charming people", Makensie said, smiling.

"Oh they are....they are so protective though", Ace said.

"Well Ace....that is what parents do. They love you", she replied. He sighed, and said, "Yeah yeah yeah"

She leans back and looks at him, and says, "I suppose I should call you Tony...in an environment like THIS"

"I was going to talk to you about that", he said, as they both laughed.

Makensie felt relaxed and comfortable, surprisingly, being this close to Tony Masters. Her thoughts went to Clift, as she glanced over in his direction. Violet and Clift were talking to their Director, laughing, and being care free. She could certainly understand why Clift would be attracted to Violet Parr. She was a very beautiful, classy lady.

She felt a slight ache in her heart, but smiled, as she turned her attention back to Ace.

He was watching her, as he ways, "I caught you" She softly laughs, and said, "Caught me what?" He said, "Admiring Clift" She smirked, and said, "I was not admiring anyone. Just watching the crowd"

He smiles, and says, "Ok, if you SAY so. Anyway, I'm a very lucky man, Ms Brewer" She gives him a look, and says, "Wy is that?" He leans toward her ear, and said, "Because I am with one of the most prettiest women in the room"

She instantly blushed, and all she could do was giggle. "Was that a GIGGLE that just came out?", he asks, smiling. She shakes her head, and said, "Tony Masters, you are the biggest BS'er Ive ever seen"

"NO my dear....I am just being honest", he said.

She laughs, and shakes her head, then gets closer in his arms so she can talk in his ear, as she said, "Thank you, my friend, but, I think I"M the lucky one"

She didn't lean back to look at him, but, she could feel him smiling, and she also noticed that this time...he couldn't say anything.

Her chin was lightly resting against his shoulder, as she stayed close, as they danced.

Meanwhile, Clift was watching Tony and Makensie, and wasn't real comfortable seeing those two look so natural together. However, he was with a pretty lady himself, and he turned to Violet, and said, "Would you can to dance?" She nods, saying, "Certainly, Mr Garrett"

They made their way to the dance floor, but for this moment, Tony or Makensie were lost in their own little world, not even paying attention to who was around them.

Makensie knew it wouldn't last long so, for now, she was just enjoying this peace.

(((Lol Mak, I didn't catch any typos. Shows what I know... ;-) )))

For quite possibly the first time in his life, Ace was at a loss for words. 'She's the lucky one? HER? No, I'm the lucky one!', Ace thought, 'I'm with an experienced detective with both age and beauty. I like her very much, and now, it seems as though she likes me! Why? What did I bring to the table?'

Clift gazed into the dancing crowd, bored with the current conversation. He looked over, and saw... Mak dancing with Ace! Touching!

Clift was starstruck. He knew how much we wanted to be in Ace's place. But, perhaps he should go with Violet?

At the firstpaus in conversation, he weaseled his way to asking Violet. They, too, went on the dance floor. But, Mak and Ace didn't seem to notice; they were much to caught up.

The music ended, for a break for food for a minute.

"Ahem... guys, guys?" Clift tapped Ace on the shoulder, "The music stopped, you know." Sure enough, Ace and Mak were still dancing as if nothing happened, and Clift felt that he lost Mak for good.
