Hi all -- Breit is recovering from her to-do this summer and my mother is gearing up for a round of radiation therapy, so I'm really trying to bring some cheer to our holidays. I'm doing everything I can think of, including Dungeness crab and Canasta for Christmas Eve and a movie night this weekend. But my question to you all is, What are some of your holiday traditions? And yes I don't care which holiday you celebrate, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas or none of these; I just want to see if I can find some ideas and have a laugh at the same time. So Happy Holidays and let fly all!!!

On first instinct, a christmas pickle sounds like the worst, least festive, most vinegary holiday porn ever. Even worse than that poorly animated 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' thing that has been removed by security from the FAQ section of the 'What not to sniff' website.

That said, I don't think the average reader is reading this for dirty subtext. If you wanted that, you would have been upstairs quietly surfing pickle-related niche chatrooms by now waiting for someone who claimed he was wearing a Santa suit to ask you if you want to 'feel the christmas spirit' from behind, and call you a naughty little elf.

So. enough about you. That said, most of my christmas traditions revolve around a) the bringing of smoked salmon for the morning of the 25th and b) watching my parents current rescue cat get high as hell off of a stocking full of catnip. They can bounce, under the right conditions.

Good times.

I also think this thread should be kept respectful, with no perverted insinuations, etc......there is a time and place for all things, and I just think since this is a thread about Christmas, it should be kept to that topic...Family Traditions :)

One fun game that we used to play but unfortunately dont any longer is the safety pin game. Everyone gets a safety pin when they arrive. They pin it on their shirt. The object of the game is to collect all the safety pins by the end of the nite! How do you acquire the safety pins you ask? Well since nobody likes negativity, anytime you hear someone say the word "no" you call them out on it and take the pin away from them and add it to yours. If someone has 5 pins and you catch them, you get all 5 pins! I know it sounds a bit boring, but once things get going it becomes rather comical. Of course you could pick any buzz word you like as well!

OK this is a sidebar.

Mak- When I first read your post I literally thought it was a real pickle. And I was thinking it was somewhat interesting that you kept hiding the same rotten pickle year over year. lol.

LOL to all. First off for Mak, I have actually heard of the Christmas Pickle thing, now that I think about it. It was common in Germany, especially since there used to be (and to a certain extent still is) a large cottage industry making hand-blown glass ornaments. Also, the Germans LOVE pickles and the combination of sweet and sour (think sourbraten). So that should have hit me when I asked you the follow-up question. Oh well, holiday mind-blank moment.

Ctown, i LOVE your game too. Not sure which word we'll choose, but I'm going to try that one tomorrow night for the pizza party and movie night!

And Crunch, dear Crunch... We already have a similar tradition. It's called "Save the Tree" because my cat (the one that got us started on keeping cats again) has had a habit since he arrived of staring at the tree, doing a nice butt-wiggle, and then launching himself as high as he can jump into the tree (every year, usually two to three times during the Season). Now, you'd think with an engineer in the family (my father) that he'd put the tree up so it could stand up to anything. Unfortunately, not so. The tree normally falls over with a whoosh upon impact with a ten-pound cat hurtling himself through the air to land on a spot above the center of gravity. Since a lot of the ornaments are glass and we really don't want to have to reassemble our tree every time he does this, the closest person usually tries to 'rescue the tree'. Normally without success. It crashes down, scatters all the ornaments and leaves a very freaked-out cat. (You'd think he'd get the idea that that was going to happen but i guess that cat at least isn't as smart as we thought when i brought him home--or he likes the dramatic effect.) So after we extricate said cat, put the tree back up, put the ornaments back on the tree, sweep up the pieces of the ones that didn't make it, and shoo the cat away from the tree (esp if he's got that wild-eyed look on his face and is madly swishing his tail),

we ALL need a nice cup of something cheerful (sometimes of the artificial kind) and a moment to sit back and consider our work (and the positive value of continuing to have my cat--sometimes have to think on that until he turns into a piece of lap candy again and seduces us all over again). Hope that gives you a chuckle in return. Happy Holidays all. (Breit is really enjoying all these, so it's a perfect (or should i say purrfect) thing for her!!) Thank you all and keep them coming!!!!!!!!
