Hi all -- Breit is recovering from her to-do this summer and my mother is gearing up for a round of radiation therapy, so I'm really trying to bring some cheer to our holidays. I'm doing everything I can think of, including Dungeness crab and Canasta for Christmas Eve and a movie night this weekend. But my question to you all is, What are some of your holiday traditions? And yes I don't care which holiday you celebrate, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas or none of these; I just want to see if I can find some ideas and have a laugh at the same time. So Happy Holidays and let fly all!!!

Love the thread idea should be great for getting everyone in the holiday mood :)

OK one weird thing that's happened for years in our family is the 'Chocolate Game' It's a wonder we can manage anything else after the huge christmas lunch but anyway I'm not sure where it came from it just kinda stuck.

So for the game you need a die, hat, gloves, scarf, knife & fork and of course the biggest bar of chocolate you can find (foilf wrapped is best if you can get it). Put the chocolate in the freezer untill you're ready to use it, just to make it even more fun. Get everyone on the floor in a circle with everything in the middle. The game is simple everyone takes turn to roll the die until someone gets a 6, that person throws the hat etc on, then has to eat as much of the chocolate as they can until the next person gets a six. The person can only eat one square of chocolate at a time :) The game obviously ends when the chocolate's all gone :)

There's a couple of good things about the game: it's probably the only time you will ever get away with violence to another family member (my grandad stabbed me with a fork once much to my grandmas annoyance) :D It can be as mad or placid as you like (scarf burns were a must in my family's game) and it's another good excuse to eat yourself silly for no reason :D

i LOVE those!!!!

Don't know if i can get away with the chocolate game (mom's a stickler for manners at all times) but it gave me a wonderful idea for another game to play after dinner some night leading up to Christmas. We have an old set of tiles for dominoes, etc and we used to play it at my grandmother's. Anytime someone put the double zero down, that person had to run into the kitchen and find a cookie from the jar. (Only applied to the zeros though) My parents never played the game with us, so i'm thinking that maybe i can do something like that.

And the blender party was fabulous too!!! (Think i'll try red though; there are so many things you can do with cranberry juice and just about everyone in the family loves the stuff!)

Christmas time at my parents house is a very relaxing time. On Christmas Eve we just have a nice traditional dinner, that was started by my Dad's Mom..which is Hamburger steak, and french fries, with maybe a salad, and we eat by candle light. It is really nice, and calming. Then we sit by the fire, and watch movies. Christmas Day we open presents, with a nice fire in the fireplace, Christmas music in the background, then once that is complete...we enjoy our gifts and each other, then later on we have a big Christmas dinner.

Now, when we have our Christmas party for the whole family...aunts, uncles, cousins, etc....that is a real hoot! Everyone brings a dish, and we have all this great food to eat. Then later we play games. One game is Hide The Pickle - the person who has the pickle comes early to the party b4 anyone arrives, and hides the pickle in the CHristmas tree. Then, we all stand in line, and we have 1 minute to find it. Whoever finds it, gets a gift, and they have to hold onto the pickle until the next year, then THEY have to hide the pickle.

The other game is called Steal a Gift. Everyone brings a gift and we put it under the Christmas tree. Then everyone pulls out a number in a hat, to see what order we will go in. Whoever has #1, ofcourse, goes first. They get a gift under the Christmas tree, open it, show it to everyone. Then, whoever is #2 goes next. If they like the gift that #1 has, they can steal it from them, to which #1 would have to go to the tree, and get another gift. Then #3 is up....he can steal a gift, or he can go to the tree and grab another gift, and goes on from there. It gets really fun and hilarious when people start stealing gifts from each other.

Then we have a family quilt. That has all family members names sewn on the quilt...our names are put in a hat, and whoever names pulled out, who hasnt won the family quilt yet, gets the quilt. I won mine last year. Has all family on there....

from those who have passed on to added members to family, etc...this is my Mom's side of family. My mamaw and papaw is right in the middle of the quilt, with all of their kids, and grandkids, etc around them. It is very nice...and its so great when you win the quilt. Each year we give money to help have a quilt made.

This year, we are adding another thing to do. We have to each write a story from our heart about memories at the farm. My Mamaw and Papaw had a farm, and that is where all of our memories are at....especially Christmas time. At the party this year, we have to each stand up and read our memories we have to everyone. Be a very touching, nice thing :)

if I dont get a chance to say it later on....I will say it now....Merry Christmas everyone, and Have a Happy, safe, New Year!! :o)

Thank you for sharing such nice traditions! We do the quilt idea for 50th anniversaries. The celebrating couple gets a quilt that has had pictures of them and their family printed on fabric. Then someone in the family pieces the quilt together and we all delight in watching the couple's eyes light up when they see it!

I like the pickle idea too but i have to ask if you use a pickle ornament or a real pickle. And if it's real, do you really keep it all year or just until it dries out?

Thank you again. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Enjoy listening to your stories!

On first instinct, a christmas pickle sounds like the worst, least festive, most vinegary holiday porn ever. Even worse than that poorly animated 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' thing that has been removed by security from the FAQ section of the 'What not to sniff' website.

That said, I don't think the average reader is reading this for dirty subtext. If you wanted that, you would have been upstairs quietly surfing pickle-related niche chatrooms by now waiting for someone who claimed he was wearing a Santa suit to ask you if you want to 'feel the christmas spirit' from behind, and call you a naughty little elf.

So. enough about you. That said, most of my christmas traditions revolve around a) the bringing of smoked salmon for the morning of the 25th and b) watching my parents current rescue cat get high as hell off of a stocking full of catnip. They can bounce, under the right conditions.

Good times.
