Makensie had spent the rest of the time after her breakfast with Clift, trying to avoid him. Some distance would do her good, and besides, she knows nothing of this Barry case, and she had murder cases to attend to.

"From now on, Reese can deliver her own messages", she said to herself.

As she was heading back to cabin for the night, she looked in the restaurant, and saw Violet Parr, and Clift in discussion.

She stopped to watch for a bit, then smiled. She walked on, and as she did so, Clift looked in the direction of where Makensie had been standing.

What Violet was telling him was very interesting, but, he also couldn't shake the thought of Makensie going through his mind, and knew he had to make sure to talk to her before she left the following morning.

Meanwhile, Makensie walked into her cabin, shut the door, and leaned against it, sighing softly.

She said, "I hope I can get off this ship, before seeing Clift" She didn't know why she thought that, and she didnt want to examine her feelings anymore.

Opening her suitcase, she began packing so she wouldn't have to early in the morning.

Clift was both shocked and unappreciative.

He did not appreciate Miss Parr amusing herself with him and calling him a ninny. He was also shocked by the amount of information she kept hidden from him all this time.

He was tired upset and drained. The Barry Grant case was draining him and he could no longer take tactfully handling the two women it heavily involved.

Clift counted four factions in on the Barry disappearance. Perhaps Barry had gathered through his years of detection something to be used against every single one of these factions.

Violet made it sound as if he was framed and so was Becky. This was starting to get really interesting but Clift could not help put things in perspective once more.

“Miss Parr, I hope you understand very clearly that this is my investigation.” Clift grabbed Violet’s hand firmly underneath the table and spoke very seriously. “I started it and you would not have been so involved if it was not for my prying. You would not even have enough money to be involved if it wasn’t for my investigations to begin with lighting up the whole of the City’s underworld. I appreciate some respect!”

Miss Violet Parr nodded suddenly taken aback. “Agreed Mr. Garrett, I was just having some fun of my own when I said that I was the one taking you with me… Just to see how you would react. It was just harmless fun I assure you.”

Clift raised a brow. “Well, I hope you had your fun, Miss Parr, for it seems that what you just said is nothing but serious business. We reach Shanghai tomorrow morning and I would appreciate you ensure that you tell me everything you know before then. That is, if you indeed intend to help me help Barry…”

Clift took Miss Parr’s arm firmly and escorted her to her room.

She gently struggled to free her arm but he kept his strong grip on her. Clift had a little too much to drink and was somewhat tipsy. He wasn’t the friendliest person when he had a few drinks.

When they reached Violet’s first class compartment he let her go brusquely. He bid her good night and kissed her hand. “If you expect me to treat you as an equal in this investigation Miss Parr, you better start treating me as one too.”

“Understood,” Violet was actually relieved to see him, go. “Good night Mr. Garrett.”

Makensie Brewer heard a knock on her door.

“Who is it?” She asked. She was getting ready to go to bed.

“It’s Clift, open up Mak. We need to talk.” His voice sounded very strange and desperate.

'Has Clift been drinking?' Makensie thought and then said. “I can’t Clift! I’m in my night gown, about to go to sleep!!”

“Mak open up this won’t take long.”

Makensie got up and as soon as she opened the door a little, Clift barged in and took her into his arms and kissed her deeply on the lips. She struggled for a bit then rested in his arms for a while before pushing him away. He stumbled a few steps back then fell with his back against the door.

“I have more to say if you will listen.” Clift smiled.

Makensie was shocked. “Clift! You stink of booze!”

Clift looks at Makensie, and says, "That, I can't deny. Yes, I have been drinking a little bit" She says, "I guess that explains the kiss"

Makensie was feeling a bit flustered by the kiss, and she would be lying if she said that she didn't enjoy it, but, of course, she couldn't admit that to him. She couldn't tell him how her heart fell to the floor when he took her into his arms like that.

He straightened up a bit, then says, "I'm sorry for that, Mak. I can see you are troubled by this" She found words to talk, and she says, "Oh no, no...not at all, Just shocked, I suppose, BUT, alcohol does make us do weird things" She laughed nervously.

He grins, takes her hand, and says, "I didn't find that weird at all. In fact, I've been wanting to do that for a long time now, I just haven't had the courage to do it. I apologize for the timing of the kiss, and for having alcohol in me when I did it. My timing never was good when it comes to these sorts of things" She smiled, then says, "No need for apologies. Now, what is it you have to say to me? Or do you think you should wait until you are more sober?"

He leads her to a chair, and has her sit down. "No, I think I need to tell you this now, before you leave the ship, to go back to London. It is docking in the morning, and I just have to tell you some things now. If that is ok, since I acted like such an idiot a minute ago?", he says.

She looks into his eyes, and says, "I dont think you are an idiot at all, Clift. I guess, I, too, should tell you something, but, I will let you go first. So, please, tell me. What is it you have to say?"

He sits down beside her, with her hand in his, as he begins.

“Mak,” Clift started, “I have been an actor on Broadway for the longest time. In my last stage production, “Damsel in Distress” I played against my sister, Vivienne Garrett, and we had a four year run.”

Mak was not sure if it was Clift or the alcohol speaking. “Clift, what are you trying to say?”

“I have always been the bad boy type... a player if you will Mak -excuse the pun, and I have broken more hearts than you can believe. The atmosphere I was raised in and was active in making me this sort of guy.”

Mak swallowed, hiding her emotions and feelings towards Clift in any way possible. “What does this have to do with me? Is it because of the kiss?”

“I feel for you Mak, but I don’t want to hurt ya.” He took her hand in his palms and kissed it a long, soft gentle kiss. “Please watch out for me. I don’t want you to be entangled with me and break your heart.”

“Clift, listen...”

“Please let me finish. You are such a sweet gal and you deserve someone who would never play around or cheat. I can’t make you that promise, and I don’t want to see the day in which you’re hurt because of me.” Clift lost his balance for a sec and fell on Mak.

They lay there facing each other for a while, breathing heavily, when Mak pushed him off her. “Clift,” she said looking away to hide the tears in her eyes, “I think you should go now.”

Clift got up and approached Mak once more but she put her hand up signalling him to stop. “Please don’t.”

With that he left her room feeling lost and more drunk than ever.

***

Clift walked the halls of the First Class wing on his way back to his standard room.

After leaving Mak’s door he came across Violet Parr’s room. He hesitated by her door and his drunken nature pushed him to knock.

Violet sat up in her bed, in her purple night gown . “Yes? Who is it?”

“It’s me, Clift…”

“Mr. Garrett?!” Violet was shocked and to a degree frightened. “It's past midnight! What is it that you want?”

“I need to speak to you.”

Violet got up and as soon as she opened the door a little, Clift barged in and took her into his arms and kissed her deeply on the lips. She struggled for a bit then rested in his arms for a while before pushing him away. He stumbled a few steps back then fell with his back against the door.

Violet was shocked. “Clift! You stink of booze!”

Of course, Clift only kissed Violet Parr in his imagination.

For in actual fact, as soon as he leaned in to kiss her, Miss Parr, acting purely defensively, grabbed his hand and flipped him through the air using the Judo techniques she learned as a young girl. Mr. Garrett flew through the air landing with his back against the wall.

Miss Parr was not that shocked when she spoke. “Clift, you do, indeed, smell of ‘booze’.”

The next morning...

Clift woke up with a piercing headache in his room. Next to his pillow he found a purple note. Through the pain, he managed to quickly read it:

“Mr. Garrett,

I apologise for my behaviour last night -if you recall anything at all that is.

It may have been out of order but I acted rather instinctively. You yourself behaved quite boorishly with an alarming degree of vulgarity.

I should hope you accept my apologies if you recall your drunken conduct last night. If not, please ignore this letter as I will your apparent slipup.

Sincerely yours,

Violet Parr”

Makensie stood staring at the closed door, which Clift just walked out of. She couldn't believe all she heard. "People really do babble alot when they drink, but, as they say, Sober thoughts become drunken words...or something like that" .....

She actually grew angry. She didn't know if she was angry with Clift or herself.

Beginning to pace back and forth, she started thinking out loud to herself....."Just what kind of woman does he take me for? Have I ACTUALLY made myself appear that WEAK? Like a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve? PUHHH-LEEEZEE! I do care for that drunken fool but, does he think Im just going to fall all over him? Have I acted like an idiot and actually DONE that? This stops right now"

She stopped pacing, and started getting everything packed in her bag. She will be very glad to be off this boat in the morning.

***************************************

The following morning, she put a note on Clift's door. She didnt want to knock, she had no intentions of talking to him before she left. She still cared about Clift, and wanted to continue enjoying their time together , but, a fool she wasn't, and she had to write him this note.

Dear Clift

I thank you for coming to my room lastnight, and telling me how you felt, and a little about yourself. You do remember what you said, dont you? It made me open my eyes a bit to the idiot I have been.

I'm not anyones sucker, Clift Garrett. I apologize for appearing like I am some dampsel in distress. That I am NOT.

I am a strong woman....and I am sorry that I portrayed myself to be like a school girl in love. I'm sure not that.

A bit of advice though.....for any other woman who comes along for you to play with.....if you have something to say, dont wait until you are drunk to do it. It really doesn't become you, Mr Garrett.

I won't be contacting you. I wouldn't want to give you the chance to break my heart, now would I? If you want any further involvement with me, you know how to reach me.

Take care, and be careful in your travels,
Mak

She grabbed her bag, and headed to the exit of the boat, and back to London.

Makensie knew she would miss Clift, and be very hard for her to not contact him, but, her Mom always told her..."Makensie, you can't make yourself easily available to them men. They will shit all over you if you do. Dont ever be any man's doormat" "You can bet I won't, Mom", she said to herself, as she exited the boat.
