"Enjoying yourself, I see", Makensie said, with a polite smile. Clift immediately leans up, straightening his jacket, and says, "This actually wasn't......." Violet Parr smiled, with her own politeness, as Makensie cut him off with a wave.

Clift looked at Violet Parr, then at Makensie, as she walked away a bit. He could see the hurt in her eyes, and wanted so much to explain what she just saw, even though there certainly was no commitment between Makensie Brewer and Clift Garrett. He just felt he owed her that. I mean, after all, she came onboard to be with him. Didnt she?, he thinks.

"Makensie......", Clift begins.

She holds her hand up, and says, "Please. I'm very glad to see that you and Violet Parr are getting along wonderfully. However, that is not why I am here" He looks at her, and with a slight tilt of his head, he says, "What do you mean?" She was more upset by what she saw than she thought, and instead of sticking to what she was actually here for, she said, "Do you think that I CARE that you are trying to WOO some other woman? Do you realize that she is using the oldest tricks in the book to get you caught up in her spell? Which, is totally fine. I mean, you and I.....HA!!!.....we are two detectives walking around on the same streets once in awhile, who have drinks and dinner....as friends!! Right? ofcourse!! Who YOU fall for is entirely YOUR business. Right? Absolutely!!"

Clift was quite amused at Makensie right now. Here she was talking to herself in front of him. Even answering her own questions. As she rambled on, pacing back and forth, he caught her by her arm, and pulled her to him, so that they faced each other. Their face was so close, they were almost nose to nose, as he said, "Makensie, dear, please stop. You are getting yourself all worked up over nothing. I assure you", he says.

Pulling away from him, she straightened herself up, blew a piece of hair out of her eyes, and says, "Worked up? I am not getting worked up, Mr Garrett. What you do with your life is certainly your business. I don't really care, you see"

He folds his arms in front of him, and smiles. She looks at him, and says, "What are you smiling at?"

"YOU", he said. "Did anyone ever tell you how beautiful you are, especially when you are angry"

She laughed, dryly, and said, "Oh please! Do not try to flatter me now. Let me tell you why I am here on THIS ship, Mr Garrett" He smiles, once again, and says, "Oh, we are back to Mr Garrett now, are we?" She ignored him, and continued with, "Reese Withers contacted me. My cousin"

"I know who she is, MS Brewer", he said. She rolls her eyes, and says, "She said that Violet Parr contacted her, and told her that Barry was in danger and for her to keep her eyes on him" He grew serious, then says, "Ms Parr contacted her?" Makensie nods, and says, "Yes, she did. Something else happened"

Clift grabbed onto Makensie's arm, and says, "What happened?" Makensie sighs, then says, "Barry is gone again" "WHAT?", Clift said, as he looked around him to make sure no one heard him, then more quietly says, "What do you mean....gone?" She went onto explain how two guys clubbed him, then took off with him.

"I just can't believe this is happening", Clift said, letting go of Makensie's arm. "You are telling me", Makensie said.

He thought for a minute, looking over at Ms Parr, knowing that she HAD to know more of this Barry Grant business than she was letting on. Turning back to Makensie, he says, "Makensie, I know you say you don't care about what you saw awhile ago...but you have to understand. I know she holds valuable information about Barry Grant, and I have to see this through. What you saw with Violet Parr, was nothing more than me trying to get her to talk. That is all"

She wiped her brow, then says, "Clift, really, I have no right to say a thing about your personal life. Right now, this is just business. This is all the reason I am here"

"IS it, Makensie?" he said.

She started to respond, but, found, she didn't know what to say, so she closed her mouth, as quickly as it started to open.

He walks close up to her, and says, " I am glad you are here, and will be accompanying me to Shanghai. I do need you here Makensie...no matter what you may think" She smiles, and says, "I think you are doing quite well with Viiolet Parr, Mr Garrett. She holds the answers to what you are after. I don't...so therefore, when this ship docks, I will be heading straight back to London"

She turned to walk away, as he gently grabbed her arm, and says, "Makensie. Please....." She took his hand, and gently took it off her arm, and says, "Have a safe trip, Mr Garrett. I decided that I can't let myself get caught up in things that ....well, dont matter.....really. Please do contact me though, whenever you visit London" He never has seen her so cool, and crisp with words, as she was right now.

He watched her walk away, as he thought, "Great. Now I have Makensie upset. No matter how she acts, I know she is hurt, and I can't do a thing about it, right now", he thinks to himself.

This wasn't over for him, though. Before this ship docked, he would be talking to Makensie ...making her believe that he wasn't some player of hearts, and to be sure she knew how much he did care about her.

For now, though, he had to put his focus back on Violet Parr. Makensie was right...she did hold a lot of the answers to this case, and he was determined to find out what they were. No matter what it took.

She may have her ways of working people, but, he definitely had his too.

Miss Violet Parr was standing exactly where she was, with her back to the ship rails. She did not move but her gaze did not leave Clift Garrett and Makensie Brewer throughout their conversation. Miss Parr could not make out what they were talking about but got the distinct feeling that the subject of their conversation was both personal and professional.

When Makensie walked away, Clift stood where he was lost in contemplation for a while, before making his way back to her. She could see that he was visibly shaken by the encounter with Makensie… he must care for her.

“Miss Parr,” Clift started. “Makensie just brought an important piece of information to my attention. You contacted Reese Withers.”

Violet looked into Clift’s eyes, she did not take her intense gaze off him when she spoke. “I did indeed.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Clift demanded.

“Mr. Garrett, please do not confuse our working relationship for a contract of exclusivity. I have a right to do what I see fit when working on a case like you do. You were here on the Sleuthetania, and your worrying about Barry throughout the duration of the journey would have been useless.” Violet caught her breath. “Miss Withers on the other hand is in Shanghai, and she is a detective who can be trusted to watch over Barry and make sure he is safe.”

“Miss Parr, what is it that you know about the Barry Grant case? And why are you so elusive about this information? If Barry is in danger then I need all the information I can get to get him out of it.” Clift was forceful. “I need to know all that you know now.”

“Mr. Garrett it is getting late.” Violet Parr said stiffly. “My bringing does not allow me to stand alone with you and discuss this matter any further because of the time and the place. I will tell you all you need to know in the morning.”

Clift was amazed that Miss Parr played that card to get herself out of talking. “So, if your upbringing does not allow you speak to a fellow detective because it is 11:38 p.m. right now, may I ask what your upbringing does allow?”

Violet relaxed a bit, then smiled. She gently brushed her index finger against her purple-red painted lips, then, using the same index finger proceeded to smudge Clift’s own lips with her exotic colour rouge.

As Clift Garrett stood there stunned, Violet smiled to him politely. “It allows me this.”

Clift walked into his bedroom still stunned.

His lower lip was still smudged with the purple-red lipstick of Miss Violet Parr. He knew he had to do something about Makensie quick, but he also would have to do something about this case before things get out of hand.

Violet had warned Reese Withers about keeping an eye on Barry, and sure enough, Barry’s kidnapped soon enough by a bunch of goons, apparently. Violet on the other hand will not tell him the information she knew readily.

He did not understand why? What would Violet have to gain from stringing him along? Wasn’t she a friend of Barry’s? Didn’t she care about the investigation coming to a favorable end?

Clift was so exhausted and consumed by thought that he decided to sleep that night and get some much needed rest, and then catch Mak the next thing in the morning before she got off the ship as she promised.

He lay on his bed, closed his eyes and fell asleep immediately.

Clift woke up the next morning and went up to have breakfast.

He had washed his face thoroughly and made sure there were no lipstick marks: Makensie would flip if she saw Miss Parr’s distinct purple-red lipstick on his lips.

He was thinking about Mak.

He knew exactly what kind of woman she was. Clift figured that most women do not like Makensie, perhaps because they are intimidated by her beauty, even if they are beautiful themselves. Mak can get a man’s attention by just walking in the room. She was beautiful inside and out, yet quiet, which can come off as snobbish. Makensie was very regal and can be biting, but she never loses her femininity, and class.

His mind then went to Miss Parr.

Violet put on the strongest and calmest of exteriors. Clift did believe that she was a very polite woman, but he felt that deep inside her was a scared little girl who puts an act to convince others that they better keep their distance. Violet’s beauty was as intense as Mak’s they were both somewhat exotic.

Mak had beautiful features with a hint of Asian beauty. Her eyes were deep and beautiful and her hair was soft and fashionable. Violet, on the other hand, had an Arabic-Indian type of beauty or look. Her eyes were curious and her hair was long and dark.

Clift shook his head suddenly and spoke to himself. “Clift! You fool! The case! Barry Grant is now missing again and in danger! Better get to work.” Clift got out his notebook when he saw Makensie walking into the resturaunt alone to get some breakfast.

Clift got up and walked quickly towards her.

He gently but firmly gripped her arm. “Good morning dear.”

“Just what do you think you’re doing, Clift.” Mak was still irritated.

Clift whispered in her ears. “Let’s not make a scene. People started looking, just join me for breakfast.”

Mak did not want to argue. It was too early in the morning. She sat across from Clift and started eating a plate of fresh fruit. “Mak, this thing with Violet Parr, is not what it looks... We’re just friends working on a case together. Don’t let it get to you.”

“Clift, I don’t want to talk about, so please don’t just drop it.”

Clift held her hand and kissed it. “Either way, please accept my apologies.”

As Clift was apologizing, Violet walked into the restaurant. “Oh great!” muttered Mak.

Makensie, at first, was going to get up and leave, but, realizing how childish that would be, she chose to remain seated. Clift looked at Makensie, then at Violet Parr standing in the doorway.

She scanned the room, then stopped when she noticed Clift. She smiled, in her polite manner, then found a seat near the front.

Makensie looks at Clift, and says, "Would you like to join your partner up there?", as she continued eating her fruit.

Clift smiled, slightly, and says, "I asked YOU to join me for breakfast. Now, why would I get up and leave you?" Growing serious, he said, "Makensie. Do you really think that I'm this rude, ignorant man, who has no manners? I care about you alot, Mak. There. Is that what you wanted to hear? I said it. I mean it. I also am a detective, as you are, so you know that work comes first, and I have to do whatever it takes to get information out of Violet Parr"

Makensie sat quiet for a moment, playing with the fruit on her plate. Finally, she grabbed her napkin, wiped the corners of her mouth, and as she placed the napkin back on her lap, she says, in a calm voice, "I am a detective, yes, and I am just as serious as what you are when investigating a crime, but to what extent are you willing to go to do this Clift? To follow her around like a lost puppy, as she tells you just enough to keep you coming back for more? I do like Ms Parr, she is very classy, and polite, but I am a woman, and I can see what she is doing. There is no doubt she knows more than she is letting on about Barry Grant, but, she is throwing just pieces out at you, while you run around like a little dog trying to catch the scraps as they fall."

Clift continued eating a bit, then after wiping his mouth, and taking a drink of juice, he says, "How would you know this, Mak? Because YOU do the same thing?" She gives him a puzzled look, and said, "Excuse me?"

"You keep yourself at a distance, even though I can see in your eyes how you feel about me, as I do you, but, you just do enough to keep yourself at arms length, and ME coming back for more"

Makensie placed the napkin on her plate, to show she was finished, and says, "You keep coming back at your own choice. It has nothing to do with how I act or what I do" He didn't comment, but silently agreed with that.

They sat quietly, and looked at each other, then Makensie broke out in laughter. He didn't know what to say or do, so, he laughed too, and said, "Just what are you laughing at?" She smiled, and said, "US. How childish we are acting. Like two idiot school-age kids" He took a drink of his juice, and says, "I suppose it does seem stupid. Here we are adults, acting like teenagers"

Makensie stood up from the table, as Clift grabbed her hands, and had her sit back down. "I know you are still planning on heading back to London, when this ship docks, but, I want you to remember what I said to you. This is just a case, and this is just business with Violet Parr. No matter what is said, or what is done ..I will do anything, to a point, to get what I need for this investigation. You know that I will keep in contact with you, Mak"

She squeezed his hands, stands up, as he does, and she said, "I know. Now, good luck with this investigation, as always, and I hope this ends up being an eventful trip" He walks around the table, gives her a hug, then gives her a single, but firm kiss on her lips. Pulling back, she looks at him, not quite knowing what to say. Her face turned a bit red, as he smiled, and says, "You blushed"

She laughed quietly, and says, "I suppose I did. Well, Clift, I am going to head out on deck, and enjoy the morning & the ocean breeze" He let go of her, and said, "I will join you in a few minutes" She smiled, knowing what he was going to do, and said, "Thank you for a delightful breakfast. I enjoyed it" He said, "My pleasure"
