International financiers and shipping magnates Patankar & Santanelli have proclaimed a new age in luxury travel with the launch of their flagship ocean liner, the USS Sleuthetania!

The Sleuthetania offers unmatched comfort and opulence for her lucky passengers as she steams the worlds oceans and visits many ports of call.

These quests are available now to passangers of the USS Sleuthetania. The Sleuthetania calls at New York harbor and the port of Shanghai every few days.

Miss Violet Parr was waving a purple handkerchief at Mr. Garrett from her position on top of the Sleuthetania main deck. However, he did not notice her. Violet had already boarded and checked into her room. She was wondering when Clift would finally show up when she caught sight of him.

Miss Parr finally tired of waving her kerchief and waiting for Clift to notice her. “Mr. Garrett,” She called out at the top of her lungs. When she realised that she had his ticket, she quickly ran down to meet him halfway.

Clift looked to Miss Parr and smiled, “Morning Miss Parr. I thought looking for a woman dressed entirely in purple would make my job of finding you easier.”

“Oh, perhaps that’s why you did not see me then.” Violet mused, “I’m wearing violet today.”

Clift masked a confused look that was about to appear on his face: her velvet overcoat looked purple to him.

Clift should have known this to be coming: The supposedly elegant and classy Violet Parr had spent all his money on a first class ticket for herself and got him a less than standard ticket. He had to share a room and, worse yet, toilet facilities.

His roommate, Alexis Peck, was a crusty young man with a temper. Clift could never figure out why Mr. Peck was so easily enraged by the movement of the ship even though it did not cause him any sea sickness.

Mr. Peck also snored very heavily, spoke loudly and was greatly irritated by the sound of ruffling papers which made it near impossible for Clift to study the Barry Grant case in private -if time spent in the company of Alexis Peck could be called private but at all.

Furthermore, Mr. Peck was a trained wrestler specialising in a variety of Asian martial arts, which made it all the more difficult for Mr. Garrett to object to any of his demonstrations of vulgar habits and poor upbringing.

Though Clift could have easily spent most of his time on deck or in any of the communal public areas onboard the ship, unfortunately for him, Alexis’s crude and anti-social behaviour meant that he could not make any friends or even meet new people. As a result, the only time he would leave Clift’s side would be when Clift was with Miss Parr.

For some reason, Miss Parr’s mannered demeanour acted as a natural repellent to Alexis Peck, and though Clift privately cursed Miss Parr for throwing him into this impossible living situation, any time he spent with her was -by pure default- heaven.

Clift handed Violet a bouquet of African Violets.

“Why Clift, how did you guess my favorite flowers were violets.” Miss Parr seemed astonished.

Clift was puzzled for a few minutes. “…Doesn’t take a detective to figure that about you, Miss Parr.” He tipped his hat and gave her his arm and they made their way into the lavish dinner reception thrown by one of the industrial tycoons aboard the Sleuthetania.

Clift was glad that for the remainder of this night, he would not have to put up with Alexis, the roommate he ended up with because of Violet’s lady-like choices.

“Mr. Garrett, I hope you are not still upset about your standard room.” Violet was put to shame somewhat by the flowers Clift gave her despite her recent treatment of him.

“Less than standard I would say Miss Parr.” Clift was both brusque and candid.

Before Violet could reply a plump man in a beautiful three-piece suit came up to them. Mr. Black, the host knew Clift’s family very well. Clift’s father, William Garrett, worked successfully as the Vice-President of a local Bank and Mr. Black was one of his many VIP clients. Also, Clift’s mother, Elizabeth Garrett, nicknamed "Garry-Beth", had invited Mr. Black to numerous soirees and dinners at the family house.

When Mr. Black reached the couple he extended his hand to shake Clift’s. “Welcome Mr. and Mrs. Garrett.”

“I am afraid that Miss Parr is not my wife, Mr. Black.” Clift smiled knowingly. “She is rather my colleague.”

Mr. Black took Miss Parr’s hand and kissed it. “Miss Parr, you must work at Obelisk too.”

“Well,” Violet started, “I suppose anything is true by association.”

Mr. Black showed Clift and Violet to their table, before he left them to mingle and welcome more of his beloved guests.

Clift could not believe his luck. The whole dinner was a parade of seafood and there wasn’t a single plate of red meat. For some odd reason, Clift could never stomach seafood, from prawns to lobsters to fish and clams. Miss Parr herself seemed to be having a blast enjoying a plate of, as she put it, delectable mussels.

“Must have been a while since you lived the high life, Miss Parr…” Clift commented. “You’re certainly acting like you have not enjoyed this luxury food for a while.”

Violet was too pleased to be offended by his insinuation. “Mr. Garrett, no matter how wealthy or poor one is in material terms, the luxury you afford yourself is always a matter of choice and never a fixed condition.”

Clift looked at her. She acted like a creature out of this world, like a heroine of a book or novel. He wondered why she couldn’t just be a real person and get rid of all those pretences. Yes, her demeanor was enchanting and amusing at first, but he was now getting tired of dealing with someone who is always polite, always proper, and always shielded by a mask of properness. ‘She is the daughter of an English aristocrat I suppose.’ He thought.

Violet surprised Clift suddenly. “I feel like a walk out on deck… Do you?”

Clift caught off guard replied. “Why, yeah… Sounds swell.”

...

When the two were walking alongside one another on deck, Clift turned to Miss Parr to see that the moonlight had cast further beauty on her face.

Clift spoke softly but with authority. “Miss Parr, now that we are well on our way to Shanghai, would you tell me the valuable extra information you have about Mr. Barry Grant?”

“Well, Mr. Garrett…” Violet turned to him giving her back to the ship rails, “I’m afraid it’s getting late and-”

Clift put both hands on the rails either side of Miss Parr, locking her into position. “It’s never too late to honor your promise… eh… Miss Parr?”

Makensie had been sitting in her office when she received word from Reese concerning Barry Grant, and his, once again, disappearance.

She sat quietly at her desk, in thought. "Why why whyyyy does this have to happen?", she complains. Makensie knew what she had to do, and she wasn't too thrilled.

A couple hours later, she found herself onboard the USS Sleuthetania. "This is so crazy. Like I want to see Clift and Violet Parr together, no matter if its business", she said to herself ,within her own thoughts. Somehow she doubted it was just business that was on Ms Parr's mind, but, she was never one to fight for a man, she just was here to give this new bit of info to Clift.

She went to the first class section of the ship, found her cabin, and put her bags where they belonged.

Feeling a bit nervous, she went looking for Clift. She didn't like the fact that she didnt know exactly what she'd be seeing, when she did find him.

Sighing, she walked along, smiling politely to people walking by her, excusing herself to those she bumped into accidentally, when she decided to go out on deck.

Makensie stopped for a moment, letting the ocean breeze blow against her, as she was feeling a bit warm, after rushing around like she was.

Looking out into the water, she thought of what it would be like to be on a relaxing cruise, with....."CLIFT?!?", she said to herself, as she looked beside her. Just a few feet beside her, was Clift Garret leaning against the rails, with Violet Parr in between, as they looked into each others eyes.

What is this?', she thinks. How stupid can you be Makensie Brewer, for falling for a damn detective? Or any man for that matter?, she says to herself.

Being the professional that she always claimed to be, and a classy one at that, she slowly walked up beside Clift and Violet Parr.

Still not noticing her, Makensie clears her throat softly, as Clift turns his head, looking right at her with disbelief.

"Enjoying yourself, I see", Makensie said, with a polite smile. Clift immediately leans up, straightening his jacket, and says, "This actually wasn't......." Violet Parr smiled, with her own politeness, as Makensie cut him off with a wave.

Clift looked at Violet Parr, then at Makensie, as she walked away a bit. He could see the hurt in her eyes, and wanted so much to explain what she just saw, even though there certainly was no commitment between Makensie Brewer and Clift Garrett. He just felt he owed her that. I mean, after all, she came onboard to be with him. Didnt she?, he thinks.

"Makensie......", Clift begins.

She holds her hand up, and says, "Please. I'm very glad to see that you and Violet Parr are getting along wonderfully. However, that is not why I am here" He looks at her, and with a slight tilt of his head, he says, "What do you mean?" She was more upset by what she saw than she thought, and instead of sticking to what she was actually here for, she said, "Do you think that I CARE that you are trying to WOO some other woman? Do you realize that she is using the oldest tricks in the book to get you caught up in her spell? Which, is totally fine. I mean, you and I.....HA!!!.....we are two detectives walking around on the same streets once in awhile, who have drinks and dinner....as friends!! Right? ofcourse!! Who YOU fall for is entirely YOUR business. Right? Absolutely!!"

Clift was quite amused at Makensie right now. Here she was talking to herself in front of him. Even answering her own questions. As she rambled on, pacing back and forth, he caught her by her arm, and pulled her to him, so that they faced each other. Their face was so close, they were almost nose to nose, as he said, "Makensie, dear, please stop. You are getting yourself all worked up over nothing. I assure you", he says.

Pulling away from him, she straightened herself up, blew a piece of hair out of her eyes, and says, "Worked up? I am not getting worked up, Mr Garrett. What you do with your life is certainly your business. I don't really care, you see"

He folds his arms in front of him, and smiles. She looks at him, and says, "What are you smiling at?"

"YOU", he said. "Did anyone ever tell you how beautiful you are, especially when you are angry"

She laughed, dryly, and said, "Oh please! Do not try to flatter me now. Let me tell you why I am here on THIS ship, Mr Garrett" He smiles, once again, and says, "Oh, we are back to Mr Garrett now, are we?" She ignored him, and continued with, "Reese Withers contacted me. My cousin"

"I know who she is, MS Brewer", he said. She rolls her eyes, and says, "She said that Violet Parr contacted her, and told her that Barry was in danger and for her to keep her eyes on him" He grew serious, then says, "Ms Parr contacted her?" Makensie nods, and says, "Yes, she did. Something else happened"

Clift grabbed onto Makensie's arm, and says, "What happened?" Makensie sighs, then says, "Barry is gone again" "WHAT?", Clift said, as he looked around him to make sure no one heard him, then more quietly says, "What do you mean....gone?" She went onto explain how two guys clubbed him, then took off with him.

"I just can't believe this is happening", Clift said, letting go of Makensie's arm. "You are telling me", Makensie said.

He thought for a minute, looking over at Ms Parr, knowing that she HAD to know more of this Barry Grant business than she was letting on. Turning back to Makensie, he says, "Makensie, I know you say you don't care about what you saw awhile ago...but you have to understand. I know she holds valuable information about Barry Grant, and I have to see this through. What you saw with Violet Parr, was nothing more than me trying to get her to talk. That is all"

She wiped her brow, then says, "Clift, really, I have no right to say a thing about your personal life. Right now, this is just business. This is all the reason I am here"

"IS it, Makensie?" he said.

She started to respond, but, found, she didn't know what to say, so she closed her mouth, as quickly as it started to open.

He walks close up to her, and says, " I am glad you are here, and will be accompanying me to Shanghai. I do need you here Makensie...no matter what you may think" She smiles, and says, "I think you are doing quite well with Viiolet Parr, Mr Garrett. She holds the answers to what you are after. I don't...so therefore, when this ship docks, I will be heading straight back to London"

She turned to walk away, as he gently grabbed her arm, and says, "Makensie. Please....." She took his hand, and gently took it off her arm, and says, "Have a safe trip, Mr Garrett. I decided that I can't let myself get caught up in things that ....well, dont matter.....really. Please do contact me though, whenever you visit London" He never has seen her so cool, and crisp with words, as she was right now.

He watched her walk away, as he thought, "Great. Now I have Makensie upset. No matter how she acts, I know she is hurt, and I can't do a thing about it, right now", he thinks to himself.

This wasn't over for him, though. Before this ship docked, he would be talking to Makensie ...making her believe that he wasn't some player of hearts, and to be sure she knew how much he did care about her.

For now, though, he had to put his focus back on Violet Parr. Makensie was right...she did hold a lot of the answers to this case, and he was determined to find out what they were. No matter what it took.

She may have her ways of working people, but, he definitely had his too.

Miss Violet Parr was standing exactly where she was, with her back to the ship rails. She did not move but her gaze did not leave Clift Garrett and Makensie Brewer throughout their conversation. Miss Parr could not make out what they were talking about but got the distinct feeling that the subject of their conversation was both personal and professional.

When Makensie walked away, Clift stood where he was lost in contemplation for a while, before making his way back to her. She could see that he was visibly shaken by the encounter with Makensie… he must care for her.

“Miss Parr,” Clift started. “Makensie just brought an important piece of information to my attention. You contacted Reese Withers.”

Violet looked into Clift’s eyes, she did not take her intense gaze off him when she spoke. “I did indeed.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Clift demanded.

“Mr. Garrett, please do not confuse our working relationship for a contract of exclusivity. I have a right to do what I see fit when working on a case like you do. You were here on the Sleuthetania, and your worrying about Barry throughout the duration of the journey would have been useless.” Violet caught her breath. “Miss Withers on the other hand is in Shanghai, and she is a detective who can be trusted to watch over Barry and make sure he is safe.”

“Miss Parr, what is it that you know about the Barry Grant case? And why are you so elusive about this information? If Barry is in danger then I need all the information I can get to get him out of it.” Clift was forceful. “I need to know all that you know now.”

“Mr. Garrett it is getting late.” Violet Parr said stiffly. “My bringing does not allow me to stand alone with you and discuss this matter any further because of the time and the place. I will tell you all you need to know in the morning.”

Clift was amazed that Miss Parr played that card to get herself out of talking. “So, if your upbringing does not allow you speak to a fellow detective because it is 11:38 p.m. right now, may I ask what your upbringing does allow?”

Violet relaxed a bit, then smiled. She gently brushed her index finger against her purple-red painted lips, then, using the same index finger proceeded to smudge Clift’s own lips with her exotic colour rouge.

As Clift Garrett stood there stunned, Violet smiled to him politely. “It allows me this.”
