The building was designed as a "super-cinema" by A.R. Andrew Parker in 1925 in striking art deco style. The cinema closed in 1927, reopening that same year as a theatre, with a concert by Marlene Dietrich providing the opening night.

For the next coming years, the theatre was home to the famed and highly successful musical, “Damsel in Distress”, for which the theatre was extensively redesigned to accommodate. The original production, had starred Clift Garrett playing against his sister, Vivienne Garrett, and ran for four years before closing on 13 June 1931 after over 2,500 successful performances.

One of the largest theatres in New York, its capacity is 2,208.

“But, I need to trust you in order to agree to this set up.” Clift said plainly. “I need the information you have beforehand.”

Violet Parr was astonished. “Mr. Garrett! How can you not trust me?”

“I don’t know… just this feeling I have.” Clift said as he took all the money he had in his wallet and handed it over to Violet. “I mean I trust you to buy my ticket to Shanghai…” Violet rolled her eyes as he said that. “…but if you want to actually accompany me on my investigations you have to prove that you’re trustworthy… somehow.”

“Mr. Garrett, my reputation speaks for itself. If you accept me as a partner, your acceptance must be unconditional. I would rather you refuse my entire proposal, than have you question my integrity.”

Clift quickly corrected himself. “My apologies Miss Parr, you are very well known and your record is spotless, but this whole Barry Grant business has left me in wonder of where I can put my trust.”

“Well, you can certainly put it in me.” Violet took the money and turned her head to look over her shoulder. “Clift, I must go now. I will be in touch.”

Violet Parr left Clift as abruptly as Mak did.

Clift looked around him.

He was all alone after an evening that teased and promised him with the company of two very different, equally beautiful women.
