The building was designed as a "super-cinema" by A.R. Andrew Parker in 1925 in striking art deco style. The cinema closed in 1927, reopening that same year as a theatre, with a concert by Marlene Dietrich providing the opening night.

For the next coming years, the theatre was home to the famed and highly successful musical, “Damsel in Distress”, for which the theatre was extensively redesigned to accommodate. The original production, had starred Clift Garrett playing against his sister, Vivienne Garrett, and ran for four years before closing on 13 June 1931 after over 2,500 successful performances.

One of the largest theatres in New York, its capacity is 2,208.

Clift was standing in front of the Marquee patiently awaiting his date with Makensie Brewer.

He had received her warning note whilst still in London and decided to waste no time in getting back to NY. Clift knew it was related to the Barry Grant case and disappearance. Yet he really did not feel that he was in danger at all.

It seemed at time that there were forces at work behind the scenes: HYDRA perhaps, or some other powerful underworld organization, that was not interested in Barry being found.

Clift checked the time: there just a few minutes left before the show starts and the doors are closed. The new owners of the Marquee were very strict about their show timings and Clift, as a stage actor, really respected the curtain call.

Clift saw Mak finally approaching from afar. He waved his box seat tickets at her. They would finally have some time to talk, and perhaps enjoy the show after they were done talking.

Makensie hurriedly walked up to Clift, and winded, said, "I'm so sorry that I'm late. Last minute things at work" She added a smile, which brought one of Clift's own out, as he said, "No worries. Come on. Show will be starting" He let Makensie go ahead of him, as his hand rested on the lower part of her back.

They took their seat, and talked casually of their work week, and cases, then Clift asked, "I received your urgent message. What is this about?" She turned in her seat so she could look at him better, and says, "I really have no idea. I just know this guy was following me, and somehow knew that you and I were friends, and that you were investigating Barry Grant. he was very creepy looking, and definitely meant business"

Clift wasn't too comfortable knowing someone was following Makensie around, or was anyway about this case, but, putting that aside for the time being, as he tried to figure out who this guy could be, and where he was from, he said, "Any distinguishing looks? Any HINT of who he was?" She thought a minute, then replied, "All I know is that he had a gruff voice. I couldn't really see HIM very well. He was hidden with his hat, and coat up on his face"

"Well, I don't intimidate easily, so, whoever this is will have to try harder than that. Nothing is going to halt this case. Nothing", he said, as he glanced toward the stage.

Makensie watched him, and grew more intrigued with Clift Garrett the more she was around him. She was really liking everything about him, and enjoyed being with him.

Reese's words kept ringing in her ear..."Don't get mixed up with a fellow detective"......but Reese's experience, wasn't her own, and she never was one to listen to anyone.

He looked over at Makensie, going to continue talking about these people who wanted the case stopped, when he noticed she'd been staring at him. He smiled, and said, "What?" She smiled in return, just saying, "Not a thing. Just enjoying the view"

He put his arm on her seat behind her, leaning toward her a bit, while turning his attention back toward the stage, as the show was beginning.

There were still things he wanted to talk about, as they watched the show, but, for now, he concentrated on the beginning of the show, and being with Makensie.

Miss Violet Parr managed to catch the eye of Clift Garrett during the stage intermission from her seat at the stalls. With a subtle gesture of the hand, she motioned him towards her. Clift, though a bit surprised to see Miss Parr in New York, excused himself from Makensie Brewer’s side and got up from his seat.

As soon as he disappeared behind the curtains of the box balcony he was in, Miss Parr got up from her seat and moved quickly but elegantly through the crowds and managed to indeed meet him halfway.

“Miss Parr,” Clift smiled. “Welcome back to New York, must have been a while since you were here last.”

“Good evening Mr. Garrett.” Violet smiled politely. “Yes, it has been some time.”

“Do you have a place to stay? During our last meeting you explained that you don’t even have enough funds to travel.”

“Well, the tides have turned, and I now have enough funds to achieve many things I could not some weeks ago.” Violet tried not to appear very alert when her voice fell down to a whisper. “How is the Barry Grant investigation going Mr. Garrett?”

Clift was suddenly alert himself. “I am still following that matter up. I may have to return to London at some point or even travel to Shanghai. Is something wrong? I sense some distress.”

Violet brushed her long dark hair back. “Oh, Mr. Garrett, I always manage to underestimate your abilities and strengths as a detective and intelligence as a person.” She pulled her violet scarf over her head and spoke more seriously. “I need to speak with you, privately.”

Clift looked to Miss Parr. He was obviously intrigued. “We can arrange to meet sometime this week-”

Violet politely interrupted. “That won’t do.” She swallowed and said with the most serious of tones. “I need to speak with you now.”

“Miss Parr, you have to understand I am out with a friend right now and I-”

“Mr. Garrett, Miss Brewer is a detective herself and I am sure she will understand this urgency. This matter is very delicate, so will you please accompany me backstage.” Violet called over a passing waiter and gave him a purple note. “Please take it to the young lady in the west-side box immediately.”

Clift started to appear apprehensive. “Miss Parr I would appreciate you give some clue about why you are acting with such haste.”

Violet turned to him. “I will, but not here…” her voice dropped an octave. “…backstage.”

“How are you going to get us backstage?”

“I have contacts at the Marquee.” Violet smiled. “After all, let us not forget that the previous owner was in effect my stepfather.”

With that she held his hand and gently led the way.

Makensie was still waiting for Clift to come back when the show resumed. She was a little flustered as to what kept Clift so long after he excused himself for a just a minute.

A Marquee Theatre waiter soon approached her and gave her a little purple note, she read what was written on it quickly:

‘Ms. Brewer,

I am borrowing Mr. Garrett from you for a while. Please excuse me.

Violet Parr’

...

Meanwhile…

Violet took Clift backstage. They were stopped a few times but were allowed through as soon as Violet was recognised by a few of the older staff members.

They were well clear of anyone's earshot, in an isolated room full of different coloured costumes and a variety of sets when Violet spoke again. “Barry has been found.”

The simplicity and clarity of her sentence, coupled with its enormous significance shook Clift visibly. He hesitated for a while before he spoke. “Can you be sure?”

“He has been found in Shanghai by Barry Grant Associates’ agency clerk, in a dark alleyway and, as per my sources, in a miserable state.” Violet looked to Clift’s face for any reactions. “I have more to tell you concerning what, who and why.”

Clift looked into Violet’s eyes, this woman could have just solved his case for him, but there seemed to be a price. “Why do I detect a but in your upcoming sentence Miss Parr. Come on, what’s the catch?”

Violet tightened her violet scarf around her head. “You must promise to take me with you to Shanghai, on your own personal expense, if you would like to know any more.”

Clift's eyes widened. Violet nodded politely.

Makensie took the note from the waiter, smiled, and thanked him, as she looked at the note. "Borrowing? More like stealing", she said. However, Makensie wasn't the jealous type, she didn't have to be. Smiling at the gentleman who looked her way, as they passed, she crossed her leg over the other, and waited patiently for Clift's return.

After, what seemed like hours, although it wasn't, she sighed in frustration, and took a paper and pen out of her pocket. She had a note of her own for Clift Garrett. She would've went to where they vanished to, but, she knew she wouldn't be allowed backstage, and she didn't have the energy to even try. Although, she knew that she'd get back there, there wasn't too many places that Makensie COULDN'T go. She knew how to work people, and she did it very well.

Jotting down a note, she folded it in half, slipped the pen and pad back in her pocket, and stopped the waiter, as he was walking by. "Excuse me, sir. Can you please deliver this note to Clift Garrett? I believe he is backstage with Violet Parr", she said. He nods, saying politely, "Of course, ma'am"

As Violet Parr, and Clift, were in a discussion, the waiter approached. "Pardon the interruption, Mr Garrett, but you have a note here from a lovely young lady sitting out there", he said, with a smile.

Clift thanked him, knowing already what it would say. He looked at Violet, excused himself from her, as he stepped away a bit to read the note.

Clift

I see that you have more important things to do than enjoy our date.

Hopefully Violet Parr "borrowed" you for a very good reason. I'm sure it is about Barry Grant, so I suppose I do understand.

However, I'm not one to wait for anyone who disappears with another woman.

Call me when you are next available.

Yours,
Makensie

He looked at Violet, saying, "Excuse me, Miss Parr" He walked out from the backstage, wanting to talk to Makensie, to let her know he had every intention of resuming their date, but, it was too late. She was walking out of the theater.

Clift wasn't expecting that, and quickly excused himself from Violet, and ran out after Makensie.

"Makensie!! Wait!!", he says, as she was trying to flag down a taxi. Turning, she looked at him, and gave him her big, beautiful smile, saying, "Clift! You decided to pull yourself away from Violet Parr, I see" He runs up to her, out of breath, and says, "Not like that at all, Makensie. I'm not rude like that. She had business to discuss about Barry Grant. She wants to go with me to Shanghai. In fact, it's the only way that I will get more information"

Makensie chuckles, and says, "Nice move on her part. You do know that Reese lives in Shanghai? She went to Barry's agency, and visited him. She said he isnt himself at all. Doesn't even know anyone right now. On your trip to Shanghai, with or without Ms Parr, you may want to talk to Reese. Since, SHE saw him first hand"

He nods, saying, "Thank you for the information. Would you care to go with me to Shanghai, Makensie? I wold love to have you by my side"

Makensie says, smiling, "Oh Clift, now I couldn't just leave like that. I have much work to attend to at my office. Please keep in contact with me though, of course." He grabs her hands, and puts them in his, and says, "I always do. Again, I'm very sorry about the interruption. The show is still going on. We could go back, and resume our time together. I really wasn't going to just desert you like that" She smiled softly, and says, "You go do whatever you have to do with Violet Parr. You and I will catch up another time" He says, "Well, if you insist. I really hate how our evening ended" She squeezed his hands with her own, and says, "It is quite ok, Clift. You know where to find me"

She winked at him, kissed his cheek,as his face turned in a bit toward her own. She quickly pulled away, and got into the taxi. As she drove off, while Clift stood watching her, she couldn't help but to feel a LITTLE jealous. She really was having strong feelings for Cllift Garrett, which she will keep to herself for now. Maybe always.

Makensie wasn't comfortable with the jealous feeling she was having, since it was something she never experienced. She shook her head at herself, and imagined what Reese would tell her if she could talk to her. "Who gives a rats ass, Mak. Play the field. Don't get mixed up with a detective anyway. It is bad news. Work never leaves the relationship. You know it is work first, romance second with all detectives. You will be left behind. As a detective, you should know that. You've done it yourself to others. Just play the field, and you will be better for it"

As the taxi drove down the street, Makensie stared out the window looking at the shops as they passed by, and she said, "You are right, Reese. I won't get caught up in Clift Garrett. No matter how much Im beginning to care for him. Maybe I need to keep my distance" She didn't realize she said that out loud, until the cab driver said, "What you say, lady?" Grinning, she said, "Nothing. Sorry. Take me to the Tricky Mister, will you please? I'm in need of a drink"

He smirks, saying, "Aren't we all, huh?" She nods, and continued staring out the window, as the driver drove in the direction of the bar.

Clift stood there on the sidewalk, dumbfounded for a few minutes.

Miss Parr had once again managed to turn a perfectly simple evening into a whirlwind of surprising events and unexpected happenings. Clift was still taking it all in. ‘What the heck! Barry’s been found in Shanghai…’ he thought, ‘…but how? And how did Miss Parr know this being in London. Mak said Reese saw him!’

As Clift was pondering this flood of information, Violet Parr appeared on the sidewalk. Clift eyed Violet Parr very carefully.

He basically did not fully trust her, but something about her insistence, conditions and disposition told him that she was telling him the truth about knowing some more information. Violet could sense that he was intrigued by her offer: she had managed to arouse his curiosity.

“Miss Parr, I hope you know that this encounter had just cost me a very enjoyable date with a good friend.”

“I intended to borrow you for a few minutes Mr. Garrett, not ruin your date.” Violet started to look around her impatiently. “What do you say about my earlier offer?”

“Fine Miss Parr, you will have your way.” Clift spoke with a very serious tone. “I will agree to take you with me to Shanghai and on my own expense…”

“However…?” Miss Parr anticipated.
