...

“He’s just gone!”

“What do you mean gone?”

“I mean gone, detective, disappeared without a trace.”

“Barry Grant? Gone?”

“…”

“And what do you expect out of me?”

“What should I expect out of you?”

Clift sat silently before Violet.

He was sure that the woman before him had been through a lot, and has seen more than he did. Yet, he could not bring himself to take in all the drama that she has encountered in her life. Clift felt that perhaps she was one of those people who took life too seriously for their own good. There was a place on her road where she simply went wrong.

Not wanting to undermine Violet's story or be in any way insulting, Clift said: "Miss Parr, thank you for your trust and information. You have been helpful to my investigations. This is my card." Clift handed her his card. "I look forward to meeting with you again when I'm in London."

As the train pulled into Paddington Station, Clift gently pulled himself from Violet's presence. Miss Parr has lived up to her name in being a very charming lady. But Clift was on a mission, and whenever he was on a mission no one's charm can make him lose sight of his initial goal.

Looking from afar he made sure she was off the train safely before leaving her as a boy helped her with her purple luggage.

As the group of detectives left the train Yoyo entered their coach, just missing them. He couldn't believe Clift was this hard to find. Yoyo had gone to the prison to see Clift and Becky. There, the prison guard told him that Clift had left earlier and was heading back to London. Becky could wait she was going to be in the slammer for a long time. Looking over the number of people in the train station yoyo realized he would never find Clift in this crowd with out some help. However he decided that London just wasn't doing it for him and made way to the office to pack his bag and return to London.

Monday 6:36 - New York

Makensie was in New York on business. She woke from a good nights rest, and was feeling great.

Her first stop was to the local coffee shop. She couldn't even focus without her first cup of coffee. Especially a MONDAY morning.

Walking out into the cold morning, she took a sip of coffee, and began her day.

Rounding the corner, she almost bumped into a gentleman coming from the other way, as she excused herself. She really didn't look at who it was, but apparently he knew her.

"Excuse me...Ms Brewer?", he said. She looked at him, and she really couldn't recognize him very well. His coat was zipped all the way up, and his hat pulled down where his face was shadowed. "Do.....I know you?", she said, slowly.

"I don't think you do. I've been following you for quite some time now. I've been sent to warn you", he said. 'Warn me? of what?", she asked, thinking, I really don't need this at the start of a Monday morning. She looked at him, and says, "Well?" "To leave this Barry Grant case alone", he said, in a gruff voice. "I'm sorry SIR, but, I have no idea what you are talking about. I am not investigating Barry Grant. Now, if you will excuse me", and she begins to walk off.

"You know who is though, Ms Brewer, and I would advise you to tell your friend to back off. This is a serious thing he is getting himself into", he said. Makensie fiddled with her coffee cup, not the least bit intimidated, and says, "If you have any problem with who is investigating Barry Grant you can take it up with them. I am already behind in schedule, Mr whoever you are, so I am leaving now. You've already wasted enough of my time"

He didn't respond anymore, just stood there, as she walked off. She was thinking, "I have to contact Clift Garrett somehow to let him know of this" She decided along her way, she would stop by the agency he works at, to see if he was in.

She made her way to Obelisk Inc, and walked in. There sat a woman, hard at work, not seeming to pay attention to Makensie at first.

She walked up, and softly, says, "Excuse me, ma'm?" The woman looked up, and not very pleasant, says, "Yes? What can I do for you?" Makensie smiled, and says, "Ummm, yes...well, I am looking for Clift Garrett. Is he in?" She put her pencil down, took her glasses off, and says, "Who are you? I don't think I've ever seen you before. I wasn't aware that he had a girlfriend, but then, he is not around much these days to even know of his personal life" Makensie chuckled a bit, and says, "Oh no....Ms.....I'm sorry, what is your name?" She sighed, with impatience, and says, "My name is Osberta Rudisill" Makensie nods, continuing, "Ms Rudisill, I am not a girlfriend of Clift's. Just a good friend. I really need to talk to him. It's very important" Osberta Rudisill was a very unpleasant woman, who didn't have time for small things. In a sarcastic manner, she says, "Oh, I am just sure it is but, he is not here right now"

"Do you know when he will return?", Makensie asked.

"If I knew, I would tell you.....and who are you?", she asked. "I'm Makensie Brewer. I'm a detective out of London. Dawg Pound Investigations." She nods, says, "Ahhh yes. I've heard of that agency. Anyway, I am sorry but, he is not here, and I must be getting back to work"

Makensie thought, Well, she certainly is a bundle of sunshine. "Can you please get a message to him?", she asked. "Do I look like a messaging service, Ms Brewer?" There was silence for a bit, then she says, with another one of her sighs, "Okay. What would you like me to tell him?"

Makensie handed her a note. "This is all I need to be said", she replies.

The note says

Clift

Please contact me as soon as possible. I really need to talk to you.

Mak

Osberta looks at it, then looks at her, and says, "Short and sweet huh? Having a lovers spat are we?"

Makensie made no comment, because she doesn't feel she has to repeat herself, saying that there isn't a romantic connection. No matter how she feels when she spends time with him, she thinks.

Makensie was a person who always remained pleasant, & very lady like but, this woman here was making it very tough to be friendly.

Osberta smiled, although not a warm one, when Makensie didn't respond to that comment, and says, "I will make sure your message gets to him. Since this is ALL I have to do with my time" Makensie ignored her sarcasim, and says, with no longer a hint of friendliness in her voice, "Thank you, Ms Rudisill. I'm glad to be able to keep you busy, so you can actually earn your money here" Osberta gasped, but Makensie walked out before she could say anything.

Makensie believed she was a very hard working woman, but, the look on her face was worth it all, when she said that to her.

Hoping to hear from Clift soon, she carried on with her daily business.

10:53 Shanghai - Outside of Race Track

Reese walks up to the entrance of the race track. If she remembers hearing correctly, someone said to check the race tracks if they wanted to find Barry Grant. She knows too well, how he enjoyed going there.

She was nervous a bit, which was an odd feeling for Reese, since she never got nervous about anything. "What the hell do I say to him, if I WOULD spot him?', she says out loud.

She wishes Makensie was with her, but she is in New York on a stupid treasure hunt.

A gentleman walked around her, accidentally bumping her arm. "Oh, pardon me, ma'm", he says, tippingh is hat. She didnt know what to say but, when she saw him tip his hat, that reminded her of Barry. He always did that. Except with Reese. She always told him that they were too good of friends for him to be THAT formal. He would always chuckle, and tip his hat anyway, just to irritate her. Actually, that was just who he was. Very well mannered.

She walked on through the entrance. Loving being in that atmosphere herself. She didnt have time to gamble though, she went to check out the lounge to see if she recognized anyone.

Looking around, she may have seen a few faces that were familiar but, none that she wanted to see right now.

Walking through the lounge, she walked up to the Bartender. "Excuse me. Have you heard of a Barry Grant?", Reese asked. He looks up, chuckles ,saying, "Heard of him? Who HASN'T heard of him. Of course, I know who he is. Very wonderful gentleman. Why do you ask?" She leaned against the bar, in her confident manner, and says, "I'm an old friend, just trying to find him. Nothing more than that. When was he here last?" He thought a minute, and said, "I see so many people in one day, I cant really remember but, I can say, it hasnt been that long ago" Her face lit up a bit, and growing more interested, she says, "Really? Do you know of where he is now?" He shakes his head, and said, "Afraid not...Im sorry...what is

your name?" Reese responds, "I'm Reese Withers" He thinks a bit, and says, Hmmm, sounds rather familiar" Reese smirked a bit, her attitude coming out a bit, and says, "Well, I imagine. It's not like this is my first time ever visiting this place" There was a slight pause, then she said, "You know what? I am very sorry for my rudeness. I am just really in need to find him, and I guess I am a bit uptight. Please, accept my apologies" She was very shocked of her politeness. She is never this way. He smiled, and said, "No offense taken. You are fine" She smiled, then said, "If you see him at all, would you tell him an old friend is looking for him?" He replied, "Do you want me to give a name?" She thought a bit, then said, "No.....just an old friend, will do" He nods, and responds with, "Will do", and continues on with this work.

She was too chicken to leave her name. She growled at herself, and walked out of the race track.

Deciding to go by his agency, she walked in the direction of its location.

After what seemed hours passing, she finally made it.

Looking at the agency, it still looked empty. Or at least quiet. Someone kept it looking neat though, since its been closed, she thought.

Walking up the steps, she started for the door handle, then stopped. What if it was unlocked?, she thought. What would she do? Would she walk in? Would she find Barry? She started to turn the handle, then quit, dropping her hand to her side.

As she turned, she noticed an old man working in his yard. Whether it be a business or home, she didn't know but, she decided to question him a bit. Excuse me, sir. I just have a quick question?", she said. The man stopped what he was doing, pulled off his gloves, wiped his brow, and said, "What can I do for you, young lady?" She smiled, trying Makensie's tactic, and says, "Have you noticed any movement here at this building as of late?"

He looked over in the direction of where she was talking, and said, "You know, I haven't really noticed. I don't THINK there has been any movement but, I've been so busy with things lately, I could be mistaken. I'm sorry that i can't be of more help" She waved, and says, "You've been a help already. Thank you very much for your time" He nods, and goes on with his business.

She looks at the agency again, then on the top window. She thought she saw the curtain ruffle a bit, but, it was probably her eyes playing tricks on her. Besides, if Barry was there, wouldn't he come out to see her?, she thinks. Answering her thoughts, she says, "I doubt it"

She walks down the walk, feeling sad, and frustrated. "Barry, Barry, Barry....I wish I could talk to you, and tell you how sorry I am", she says. She let out a loud growl, which attracted a stare from the guy she just talked to. Waving, she walked on, determined more than ever to find him. No matter what it took.

Clift had a sleepless London night that night. Torn between staying in London some more and doing some further investigations, leaving to Shanghai immediately the next morning… or just going back to New York and regrouping.

The Barry Grant case, no matter how important for his career as a detective, took up so much of his time and energy. Clift had not only unearthed Barry’s past, with it he seems to have resurrected several issues, characters and associated stories. He felt he needed some time to think of his own life and where it was going.

The investigation has been consuming, but there were two specific people Clift met that were consuming his thoughts aside from the investigation. They were two beautiful ladies to be precise. The first was Miss Makensie Brewer.

Mak was beautiful, sweet and trustworthy. Clift knew that his first friend’s loyalty would never be in doubt. However, he started having feelings more than those of friendship of late. He kept thinking of Mak’s skin and complexion. “Pure ivory” he thought. He pretty lips and soft features, dainty nose and smooth hair style. He shook his head.

The second woman came to mind, Miss Violet Parr… her dark beauty, beautiful smile, and intelligent eyes. However, Clift was informed by certain trusted sources that Miss Parr, though charming, had a tendency of flustering the men in her life, causing them to act in irrational ways. He stopped and thought, “She must be a female version of Barry. It all came together, she was polite, well-dressed and a central female figure for the men in her life and cases.”

Clift wondered whether Miss Parr and Mr. Grant had noticed the similarities in one another, or whether they have even discussed them.

Clift felt sorry for the harsh way in which he left Violet earlier after all she had confided in him. He could not fully trust her though, the way he did Mak. Mak was an open book and she gave Clift nothing to fear, whereas Violet… Violet always gave the impression "whether consciously or subconsciously- that she knew more than she was giving out.

“I should do something fun before leaving London.” He suddenly diverted his thought. “I should go watch a west end show!”

With that, Clift hugged his pillow, smiled, and went to sleep.
