Hello fellow sleuthers! It seems to have been a while since we’ve had a contest. We here at Blue Pagoda have come up with a little one for those who have a few minutes to spare between Sleuthing, real life, and Villain Hunting.

THE PREMISE:
We would like you to choose ONE of the four candidates and write their bio for us. Their names or faces are known throughout Sleuthville, but we know so little about them. So, delve into their past and tell us what you think happened to bring them to where they are today in Sleuthville. Your choices are: Big Lucy, Shady, Larry the Toe, and the Magnifying Glass Lady who introduces the Faction twist.

THE RULES:
1. Spelling and Grammar DO count.
2. The limit is 3000 characters, which is the Bio limit for every detective. (You can see if it fits on your detective bio before you post your entry here.)
3. It must be in the time frame of Sleuth Noir, around 1920.
4. One entry per detective, writing their own entry. Proofreaders are fine. Collaborators are not.
5. Open to subbed and unsubbed

THE PRIZES:
1. First Place -" a special prize" by the Sleuth Admin or $50,000 sleuth dollars
OR
6 month subscription to unsubscribed player
2. Second Place - $25,000 sleuth dollars
OR
3 month gift subscription to unsubscribed player
3. Third Place - $10,000 sleuth dollars
OR
1 month gift subscription to unsubscriped player

DEADLINE:
October 9, 2008 at 23:99 sleuth server time.

THE JUDGES:
Will be announced after their decisions have been made. Volunteers are welcome. Please PM Lady Jas if you are interested in judging!

This is just what Gene needed. “I’ll tell you what I’ll do, you’re still inexperienced, I’ll wipe the record clean for $48,162.” He said.

“What? All that money for a couple little mistakes?” Protested the detective.

“That’s the offer, take it or leave it,” Gene told him as he turned to leave.

The young detective knew there was not much he could do about it. “Oh that is just shady, here’s your money” he yelled at he handed over the cash.

Gene thanked the young detective and assured him that all would be taken care of.

He made his way back to the bureau and told his director that no money would be needed to keep his secret. All he wanted is cooperation when he needed some records wiped clean.

The director was shocked, “It’s a deal Gene, I didn’t think you’d let me off so easily. Thank you.” He said.

“I don’t go by that name anymore boss, from now on, just call me Shady.” Gene said as he made his way to the door.

Here we go: (2978 characters) ;-)

I am Irina Sharanova. This is my story.

Most of what I remember from my childhood is fleeing from our dacha in the middle of the night. Years later I realized that my parents fled with my family because they had no choice. The Bolsheviks had come to arrest us, so we ran. My father was Menshevik, descended from a high boyar in Kievan Russia. We were nobility, although ours was a minor line; we were not wealthy. From then on all that comes to mind is cold and hunger.

Some years later, we came to New York. My father found work as a banker’s clerk. He even rented a small apartment for us. My mother worked from before dawn to hawk vegetables at the market square. Most days, the produce she could not sell were split up, and her portion became our soup.

My siblings and I sometimes went to school, sometimes not. When we were not in school, we were helping Mama. As the oldest, it was my duty to look after the little ones, to keep them out of trouble. We learned much on the streets, much more than in school.

When I was twenty, the Spanish flu came to much of the city. I was the only one in my family who was not sickened from it. A month after it came, my parents and two brothers were dead. We were alone, and I was responsible for my siblings.

I tried looking for work, but found few options. New York, I found, was swamped in corruption. The city was ruled by underworld groups, all vying for supreme power. The Chinese Triads ruled the East End, especially the grocery shops and tea markets. The Italians governed the Northern city, and the real estate offices. Religious fanatics controlled the Southern city, and the banks. The politicians and scholars dominated the Midtown, and City Hall. The Dies Arcanum Brotherhood presided over all the churches in the city, and the nature fanatics governed the hotels of the city (only God knew why). No matter where I looked, I was not welcome.

Then, as my family were on the verge of starvation, I found a savior. He was a rather strange-looking fellow, with dark-rimmed glasses and a funny hat with a tassel. He said he was a detective, and he needed my help. He wanted to restore the balance of power in the underworld. Along with the rest of the detectives throughout the world, he thought they could restore the balance. But they needed someone to keep an eye on the factions in each city,-to let the gumshoes know when things were out of kilter. I talked his proposal over with my family, and here I am.

You may have seen me and wondered, “How is she in New York one moment, and Delhi the next?” It is simple. No, there is no magic involved. Merely the power of family. I am the balance in New York. My sister Oksana rules London. Tatiana, a year younger than her, plays the factions against each other in Shanghai. And Nadia, the baby of the family, holds court in Delhi. Each of us was given a special silver magnifying glass as our emblem, so that we might peer into the workings of our city, and your mind.
