is it worthwhile to drop a case to get a better standing with a faction? will quitting a case, leave any marks on my record? thanks!

The number of quit cases will only show up on your own detective page, and the weekly high score list if you make it onto there. Otherwise, it has no negative effect on your detective except in terms of your faction standings that you've mentioned.
