I have read the FAQ and cant seem to find the answer to my question, but will apologize up front if it has been asked before.

I have a tough detective, after reading 'gear to keep' , in the FAQ section, Its saying (or my understanding of it), I should concentrate on tough gear.

How ever, my dilema is Ive only been offered 1 piece of tough gear, The awful tatty coat im wearing at present, my only consolation with this coat is that you've probally all worn it before me judging by the state of it :)

Will I get offered other tough stuff here in New York or do I need to move to another city to have the chance of being offered alternatives. Turbans and berets seem to be the norm for me t the moment.

It's not problem getting more and better clothes...
When the difficulty of your favors increases, so does the clothing items you may gain. Also, when you earn some money, you might find some tough gear in the Detective Shop.
It's a lot of different clothing items/gear in Sleuth, both tough, charming and smart, and combinations of those.
Have a look at the other sleuths in the game, and examine what they wear. About every item in the game are availiable to everyone, but the effort you need to put in to get the item may vary a lot!

About the only things you can't get ahold of around here are certain specially-designed things that Admin's given to certain people like Serges' Knifeboots for meritorious service to the AVL League and Biggie's Birkensporks for her March Madness win (don't ask ;-). Trust me, you don't wanna get your paws around either or those pair of shoes. Otherwise, pretty much anything you see on any detective can be found somewhere here in Sleuth. Beginning detectives often have luck in the Detective Shop, like Huglover said. If I may, I'd suggest waiting a bit, doing those favors you keep getting, selling what you don't need or want and saving up the cash, then going to see Big Lucy and seeing what the Fence has to offer. Most of the merchandise he offers changes on each visit, and it's all much higher level stuff than anything you'll find in the shop. (It's also much more expensive, ergo the saving up of the piggy bank.) Between the favors and a couple visits to Lucy's, you should be decked out in somethin' spiffy in no time flat. ;-)

By the way, favors increase by a level, starting with Intermediate and going up to Incredibly Hard, after you've solved about 10 of them. Every 10 or so favors, you'll go up a level, and your cases get harder and rewards get better. They even out at Inc. Hard, where you'll get $4800 for every favor solved. It's why us old fogies tell everyone to keep working those favors. The money can add up quickly. *thumps cane* ;-)
