Hi there!

I've got 2 newbie questions:
1) What are these books in the game and how do I get them?

2) I've made a favor to the shoe maker, solving a case, but there is no one in my contacts list. So how do I make contacts, and are they important to join a faction?

I hope you can answer my questions! :)

Books you usually buy from different "stores" in the game. Most of these places to purchase items are where the different factions are based. You must be in good standing with a particular faction in order for them to open up to you and share info, skills, and allow purchasing of items. Some examples of the different factions are; La Cosa Nostra or The Order of Socrates (I believe you can research the factions at City Hall)

Doing a favor usually nets you a free item, which you can choose to keep and wear (use) or you can sell it at some place like the detective store (found on the MAP, upper left hand corner). On an extremely rare occasion, instead of an item a townsperson will become your contact and answer any questions you ask of them for the rest of your cases. Contacts are not required to join factions, but they ARE a big help and some of the more competitive agencies are always looking for detectives with certain helpful contacts they don't already have.

LCN's at the Real Estate Agency, DAB's at the Church, and OOS is at City Hall. There are other places you can find books, including some in New York. Go do some exploring, you might find 'em. Books give you a small amount of experience each time you read a new one, but mostly they're a perk of exploring different places.

It can take quite a while to get a contact, sometimes several hundred thousand points exp. Keep doing the favors, you'll get one eventually. There's other posts around that you can search for about Contacts, and how to get specific ones if you want to.

Good luck!
