i've been playing on intermediate and hard levels, and research only seems to work when you've got all the suspects, meaning you can tell you got all the suspects if something comes up while researching. is this constant? or does it have to do with my 2 smarts adjustment? just wondering.

Research works when the suspect who is cleared through it is on your suspect list, not before.

So if it happens to be the first person, you will still get results.

You can tell you have all the suspects by learning the number of suspects there will be at a given level, which has been posted here more than once.
