What does smart equipment do? A couple days ago I bought shoes from the detective shop and they give me +1 smart. What does that mean? What tough and charm equipment do?

The equipment you have enhances one or more of your three attributes, Smart, Charming, or Tough.

Skills are based on these attributes, so the higher they are, the better your chance of successfully using that skill (there are some skills that automatically succeed, like the basic crime scene analysis skills, but we'll save that for later).

Your new shoes give you a bit better chance of using any smarts skills you may have. Smart skills are especially important for finding the four types of evidence (if you have the appropriate skill it works automatically) and determining something about that evidence. The advanced hair analysis, for instance, gives you a chance to see if a hair is straight or curly. This chance is bases on your smarts, and that's where your shoes come in.

I notice you are tough and charming. Having some smart gear will be important to you, but you should also try to get either some tough or charming equipment as well (depending on which way your skills go).
