A purple-gloved hand readied a ticket for the inspection of a passing conductor, whilst the other gloveless hand tightened a mauve overcoat over a primly poised torso. The conductor’s gentle smile was met with a very polite one and Miss Violet Parr managed to assert the legitimacy of her presence on the speeding train.

Miss Parr adjusted the indigo scarf holding her long dark hair back and turned her head to look out the window in the hope of admiring the beautiful scenery. However, she cast her mind back to past melancholic happenings instead. Her stare grew blank, her face was suddenly lifelessly stiff and her curved lips did not manage to continue her polite smile.

“Is everything okay Miss?”

“Violet Parr…” Violet replied instinctively as if on guard for the social norms and rules of decorum she so often was surrounded with. She cast her glance upon the prim-looking elderly lady who sat against her in the passenger carriage. “I am sorry… I…”

“Violet Tarr you say? Allow me to apologise, I seem to have startled you my dear Mrs. Tarr-”

“I am sorry it’s Parr, and it’s Miss Parr…” Violet was quick to correct her.

“I see…” The woman looked at Miss Parr thoughtfully before she continued. “Well Miss Parr, it is not my place to meddle, but you do seem to be… broken…”

“I beg you pardon?” Miss Parr sharpened her tone.

“No need to seem so aggravated my dear.” The elderly woman started. “What I meant was that you seem to be very distressed about a certain something…” then she decided to add with a conceited smile. “…or someone.”

Miss Parr was dumbfounded for a while at the woman’s extreme vulgarity. “Well I am sorry to disappoint you madam, but you have been labouring under a very unfortunate misapprehension.”

The woman continued to push forward. “Well you know you can always confide in Auntie Beth… After all, I, more than anyone, would know what young men nowadays can be like…”

Miss Parr turned her head away in the hope that ‘Auntie Beth’ would stop talking.

“Promising marriage to pretty young women like you and then disappearing without a trace… Auntie Beth understands the dim prospects you have my dear… Why you must be well into your late-twenties. Your beauty is already fading, I can see… We must act quick…”

Miss Violet Parr sank further and further into her plush first class seat as the realisation dawned upon her: There was no changing seats in this already overcrowded train, and, as such, she would have to endure ‘Auntie Beth’ for the duration of her long journey.

Yoyo moved through the crowded train in search of some free space. He carried a leather shoulder bag. After finding a spot that would allow him ample shoulder space he let out a long sigh. It was a warm day today and the fact that he was packed like a sardine in a can with all the other people on the train did not help. He looked down at the people sitting down. He saw a young lady, bored out of her mind, being lectured by an older woman. As he looked closer at the young woman he recognized her. ‘Violet?’ Yoyo said ‘I haven’t seen you in ages!’

“Yoyo! Why I never…” Miss Parr was not only pleasantly surprised - she felt rescued to a much greater extent and for the second time by the gallant Mr. Yoyo himself. “I have been in hiding I admit, Yoyo. It was all too much for me to handle "I am after all human.”

“Excuse me young man!” Auntie Beth was quick to interject. “You cannot walk back into her life in this manner. Really! You men these days…!”

Yoyo was confused. “Violet, is this woman a relative of yours?”

“Oh heavens no!” Violet managed a swift answer to Yoyo before turning to the woman and trying to contain the situation. “Yoyo is a friend, Auntie Beth, no more, but most definitely no less.”

“A ‘friend’?” Auntie Beth questioned.

“She’s you Aunt?” Yoyo exclaimed.

“No at all! She just refers to herself as ‘Auntie Beth’ for some reason.” Violet turned to Auntie Beth. “Really though, madam, it does not come across as very mentally healthy, referring to oneself in third person by name.”

The elderly Auntie Beth was finally insulted, and decided to ignore Violet and her old friend. Miss Parr considered a quick well-manoeuvred apology, but then decided against the idea. She directed her speech at Yoyo.

“Yoyo, are you comfortable standing like that? Tell me, what news is there of Christopher and Ran? I have been so out of touch with everyone ever since our last escapade in Shanghai.”

‘Well our last adventures I believe finished well. It had become so complicated I’m not sure that anyone knows the whole story exactly. Everyone is doing fine now, business as usual I suppose’ he said as he shrugged his shoulders. ‘Danger, international espionage, murder; the full house’

‘MURDER! ESPIONAGE!’ interrupted Auntie Beth ‘Anyone; let alone a woman should not be involved with such things’.

Violet and Yoyo rolled their eyes, knowing that Auntie Beth didn’t even know half the story.

‘So tell me Violet’ continued Yoyo ‘At which station are you leaving this train?’

“Auntie Beth…” Violet could not believe she was actually uttering the words. “Mr. Yoyo here is referring to story writing… You see… We are both novelists… Murder mystery writers-”

“Lying does not become you Mrs. Parr-”

“Miss.”

As Violet turned to continue her dialogue with Yoyo, she heard the words uttered by Auntie Beth: “Well I know a thing or two about murder… believe you me.” However, she decided to push on. “I am leaving at London Victoria. There are a few things I need to do and a few people I must meet before leaving to New York in a month’s time.”

“… or three … or four…” continued Auntie Beth. “Multiple murders actually… young men… all in their early twenties.”

“Heavens!” Violet turned sharply. “You are very rude madam to be amused by such talk amongst polite society.”

“Oh I am not amused at all by these murders dear Mrs. Parr.” Auntie Beth looked seriously defiant, “Which is why I informed the murderer that I shall make my way to Scotland Yard instantly!”

Miss Parr got up from seat and asked Yoyo to help her with her two violet suitcases. “Perhaps it is best if we leave you Madam. Good day.” She hesitated and mumbled. “It is actually Miss.”

“I beg your pardon?” enquired Auntie Beth.

“Never mind.”

Violet and Yoyo got off the locomotive when it reached Victoria station. The two of them walked through the crowd of men, women and children.

‘Tell me Yoyo, where are you off to now? After another international crime syndicate?’ asked Violet.

‘No, nothing dangerous now. I am moving to New York to restart an old agency’ replied Yoyo.

‘So in theory nothing dangerous.’

‘Yes, in theory’ repeated Yoyo.

The two detectives had just gotten off the platform and were moving through a door into the damp English weather when they felt it. Well, rather they first saw it, a bright white light that swallowed everything. The sound followed; a sound that shook the windows and the ground. The next thing was the worst; the blast wave threw Yoyo and Violet to the ground. Ripping the ceiling mounted clock to the ground and hurling anything that wasn’t bolted down through the air.

Yoyo slowly stood up, Violet’s two suitcases still in hand. He could see that the train that had brought Violet and Yoyo to Victoria station was now a large piece of hot twisted metal.

Violet Parr was horrified.

In all her years she has never witnessed anything like this. Her senses were still in shock, and her body greatly resisted her brains efforts to make it recompose itself. She opened her mouth without thinking and let out a faint scream.

A man’s yell was heard: “Quick! Lady Elizabeth Beaufort was onboard !”

She took a step back and bumped into somebody. She did not turn to apologise. For the first time in her life, she had no time for good manners.

Before she could formulate any further reaction, a strong hand grabbed her left shoulder.

Yoyo pulled Violet behind a trolley used for carrying luggage. Two people with weapons left the cargo carriages of the train. They fired at the police officers who were amidst the crowd of commuters. Yoyo pulled out his pistol and shot randomly at the assailants. He saw that the two men were only providing cover for more men who were pulling bags and items of cargo out from the carriage and into a truck. As the men finished their heist Yoyo was able to shoot one of them, in the shoulder. The man trudged to the truck and the gun battle ended. The sound of ambulance sirens filled the air.

‘You alright Violet?’ asked Yoyo
‘Yes, I’m fine thank you’ replied Violet.
‘Let’s get out of here; even for me that’s enough for a day. We’ll talk to the police later, I have a feeling there’s more to this than meets the eye’. He lifted up the two violet suitcases, nodded towards the door.

Miss Violet Parr sat upright, nervously glancing at her brother at he munched away at her homemade Cheese & Chutney sandwiches. “These are particularly sumptuous Vi…”

The expressions on Violet’s face slightly twisted with a sudden aversion. “Oh Leopold, you know better than to speak as you chew… It is a show of unsightly manners.” Miss Parr waited for him to finish his fifth and final finger sandwich before she managed speech again. “What news does the Yard have of that fatal explosion at Victoria last week?”

“Now, now Miss… You know I can’t casually discuss such official matters with you. You’re a Private Investigator and I certainly shan’t compromise my position at the Yard.”

“I assure you Leopold you can trust my discretion this time. Plus, I work in New York… There is no conflict of interest whatsoever due to the geography of it all.”

“Then why not refocus your attention to a New York explosion?”

“This woman… the Lady Beaufort… she spoke to me for a whole two hours before Yoyo showed up…” Violet’s voice trembled slightly as her body shivered at the memory of the woman’s long speech.

“What of it? Lady Beaufort was merely another victim of the tragic incident… Anymore sandwiches?”

“Well… she did speak of murders… multiple murders of young men… it makes one think does it not?”

Leopold Parr eyed his younger sister skeptically. “You are not insinuating that someone decided that the easiest way to kill a fragile old woman was blowing up a whole train just because she was on it… Are you Vi?”

“I most certainly am not… I am just curious as to what made her speak of such allegations. Anything about her specifically you can tell me Leopold?”

“You must understand my dear that I am very new at my post. I would not be trusted with much information anyway.”

“Whatever little you can find out for me… I would be very thankful.” Violet managed a smile. She has been tense for a few difficult days and sleepless nights, and could not imagine that this woman whom she encountered for a few hours could have such an effect on her life.

Violet stood up and walked to the door. “Leaving so soon?” inquired Leopold.

“I am afraid I am meeting a friend for lunch.”

“Your purple plate…?”

“You may have it Leopold. God knows your place is in need of such intense colour.”
