I'm really confused couldn't people just do this themselves and tailor their equipment to their own personal needs?

To answer you're main question, yes. But it involves research to find the best equipment for your archetype. Also you can tailor your outfits for your needs, all I do is give you the names of the equipment that gives you the most positive points to your archetype.

Also if your archetype is very smart you should tell me what you use to question suspects.

Example: Archetype very smart but he uses charm to question suspects.
