About subscription: for villain/treasure hunts, is it a MUST to be a subscribed player? Also, is subscription necessary for getting into agencies and empire building?

When exactly does the game update (ie, zero cases to four cases per day?)

I did two favors to the priest and the tailor, I still do not have either as a contact... how does that work?

Yes, you HAVE to be subbed to do Villain hunts. AV hunts involve solving cases in all four regular cities (NY, London, Shanghai, and Delhi), and you can't do that unless you're subbed.
Treasure hunts are another story. Some are single-city, meaning they're confined to only one city; some are multi-city, meaning traveling's required. So, yes, technically, you can be unsubbed and do treasure hunting, but you'll only be able to do single-city NY hunts, and you'll be left with 4 cases a day. That's it. Sorry.

Empire building's a bit of a dicey issue round here, and rather difficult to do. It's virtually impossible to do on your own, and yes, you need to be subbed to even attempt anything in the ballpark (not that it'd go over real well anyway).

You cannot join, form, move, expand, or collapse any agency in any city anywhere unless you're subbed. It's not an individual agency policy, it's a site one. Sorry.

The server technically resets four times a day, at 12:00 and 6:00, AM and PM, each day. At those times, new hunts come up. The whole system resets at 12:00 AM Mountain Standard Time, at which time, you'll see where the Ambassador's moved to, which Agencies are no more, which hunts are new, and of course, that all Detectives have had their case levels reset to normal (4 and 12 respectively) limits.

There's a whole slew of stuff about contacts and how to go about gettin' 'em. One of the more recent threads:

Contacts generally take a whole lot longer to come by than four cases (we're talkin' at least a couple thousand experience points). Start doin' your cases, they'll come eventually.

There's more info for new people around here than you can possibly fathom. You might start off by checking out the Welcome Newbies thread, the Newbie FAQ, the Tutorial, or the Newbie Board here.

Good luck!
