Look at the upper left corner of your screen after you select a different theme. You will see a slight change from classic sleuth to shady character. Although if you are unsubscribed, most of the image is blocked by the advertisement. That ad is not there for subscribed players. Most noticeable is the font Sleuth is written in. They do not do anything to change your game play, just provide a different look to the background image.
