My 'head gear' is presently a Beret, and I have a charm adjustment level of 3.
If I would purchase the Sleuth Hat, which would give me a better adjustment in the 'smarts department' - would I lose the charm points of the beret, since I would have to sell it?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I don't really know how all this works, yet...

I am not certain, but my sense it that the smarts test adjustment points only help at higher skill levels - when you are searching a crime scene, if you have advanced hair skills, more smarts adjustments will help you uncover whether its curly or straight. But as long as you just have basic hair skills, you will find the hair regardless of how smart (or not) you are. More smarts won't help you there.
On the other hand, improving your suspect interview skills with higher test (charm or tough) will pay off immediately in fewer clam-ups.
