Your evidence analysis skills don't automatically work all the time. It depends partly on how many smart points your equipment gives you, and partly just on luck. With your skill set you're guaranteed to find all the physical evidence, but not necessarily to be able to analyse it.
As for gear, I'll just recommend the 'Archetypes, skills and gears' thread - it's all there!
