Scripted Mysteries are a great alternative to standard cases. They are more of a story, written often by real players of Sleuth, that you take an active role in.
You need a bit of time to play them and your thinking head on as there is a lot more reading and clues are often scattered in the story.
Other than the Doomsayer Trilogy there's no great prizes for playing them, they're just good fun.
If people haven't already tried them give them a go, you may like them. And remember - different authors have different styles, play them all and no doubt you'll find some you really like

Erm... in my excitment to recomend SM's I forgot to say "Pay attention to the difficulty level, some are harder than others".
But the big advantage of SM's is if you accuse the wrong person it doesn't mattter, you can play again another time and don't get a false accusation on your record.
