Hey this is just my oppinion on a good skill to have. I think lock picking is great. I find that many times one of my suspects is away from the house and so the chance to picklock pops-up quite a bit.
ok thanks

Sure.
Lock picking is a good skill to have after you have all of your basic smarts and interviewing skills.

What can you discover in people's houses? Like, how does lock-picking help?

sometimes it says something on a calendar like ''meet with barber'' or something like that, then you know the persons alibi. Or it might give you more suspects.

It just saves you one question Rocky.
Note though that if you use lockpicking (which won't pop up more than twice in a case, less for easier levels), and it says "Their appointment book shows nothing of value", it means they have NO alibi, even though the question of alibi will still appear on your subsequent visit.

It will do ONE of two things. Like Roxette and Biggie have said, it may give you the alibi of the person you're looking into. If it doesn't do that, it will give you the list of the people they think may be involved in the crime (the motive question). You have no control over which one the lockpicking skill will answer, but it will give you ONE of the two for two suspects (usually).
