A young man confronts Jack Altavon Talison. The man says he is Roger Acton, and he has a case for Jack. Something involving murder, pie, dead Zachary Acton, and more murder. And a suspect called Jerome Lormos.

"And what do you pay for this?" Jack asks.

"$600 for solving the case." Roger replies.

"Er...uh...I guess I'll take it."

"Did I mention I told an assortment of other detectives about it? And that I will gve the reward to the one detective who solves the case, using all means possible?"

"Uh, no, you didn't mention it until now."

A knife is suddenly thrown at Jack. It narrowly misses him.

Where to hide, where to hide? I wondered as I opened a door nearby. It was the bedroom with a small closet and a bed.

Under the bed. No, hiding under the bed was such a childish and immature cliche. Closet? Also a cliche, but with much more room. I ran in a quietly shut the door.

*meanwhile, on the opposite side of town*

Kevin Greene is rudely disturbed by the prankster. Again. Again, the little brat knocked and ran. I hate that, but this time I was waiting.

He knocked, and I ran to the door. I flung it open, just when he knocked again, and grabbed his wrist.

Only problem was, it wasn't his wrist.

"What ARE you doing???" Oh, hooray! I was grabbed onto the landlady's leg.

"Oh, hi Mrs. Zibrowski! Just, um, checking for, uh, mice! Yep! I was checking for mice!" Couldn't I have thought of something better?

"Looking for mice on my leg, Mr. Greene?" She taunted, "Oh, never mind, this is more important." Boy was I glad to get off the subject!

"There's a woman, or rather, a girl, here. Says she wants to see you."

"Well, send her in!" I said, as if I owned the place. Shortly after, a young girl walked in.

"Detective?" She asked cutely. "Yes, I'm the detective." I said, getting down to her level. "You need something?"

"Yes. A man out there said to give you this note!"

I thanked her, and read it. It said, in newspaper cutouts:

MeET mE At thE NeW YOrk TraIN StaTioN, if YOu EveR WanT TO SeE YoUr PrECIouS FiFI AgAin. I'lL ConTaCt yoU.

That made me laugh a bit. Cause, I don't even have a 'Fifi'!

I saw Mack go out the door. I was about to follow her when something caught my eye. A note. I was about to read it when I heard the door jingle. I pocketed the note and ran out the back door, running next door.

I was about to pick the lock when I saw that it was already opened. Figures, I thought. Mack's already here.

I opened the door and at first didn't see anyone. I noticed the pie tins and groaned. Either somebody liked pies... or thought every person he kidnapped did.

I heard a sneeze.

I looked to my right and saw a closet. Suspicious, I walked towards it...

"Mack?" I called softly

*Meanwhile*

I decided to meet my next "client" at the train station anyway. I was there for less than a minute, carrying a chihuahua with a pink bow tied in it's hair. That's the exact way I expected a "Fifi".

He was dark, and trying to act tough, but holding a pink bag with a little dog inside kind of diminished that.

"Detective?" He whispered, like he was a spy.

"I must tell you, that isn't my dog." I said, setting all courtesy aside.

"It isn't? Whoops!" He chuckled. "I want you to work on a case for me, Greene!" He said, this time, a little more light-heartedly.

"Okay, what?" I asked, more eager than before.

"My nephew, Zachary, was murdered several days ago. I want you to find out who did it."

"That costs green, my last name. How much you offering?" I said, punnily.

"$600, and the chance to keep your life." He threatened, as he pulled out a gun. The man didn't phase me, though. After all, he was holding a "Fifi".

"I'll do it. Because of the 600. You wouldn't kill me." I said.

"You're right. But I'd hurt you."

I already knew the case. I had heard all about it on the news.

"I must warn you, though. I'm hiring other detectives. The one who gets it gets the 600. So you best be quick." He said, then, turning back around, he said that there were already several others working on the case. This was going to prove to be a doozy!

I decided to check out the victim's home first. Maybe I'd find something the others overlooked.

I walked up the front steps, and heard something inside. I looked through the window. Empty and half-empty pie tins littered the floor. Creeping from the kitchen was the silhouette of a woman. She was heading toward the closet.

I ducked down below the door and pulled out my gun. I crouched down and tried to open the door. It wouldn't open. Hooray! Now the female thief would
get away, while I picked the lock.

I finally got it opened, after one of the longest 30-seconds of my life. I sprung through, pointing my gun around. She was gone, and I wasn't surprised.

I looked around at the pie tins, warily beginning to search for the woman.

I decided to use my advantage in the closet to look for more clues. I flipped through the clothes and found nothing of interest. Glancing up at the various shelves I noticed a lady's hat box. How very unusual for a man. I picked up the hat box and, noticing the lid was covered with dust, blew on it. Immediately, dust flew up my nose and I gave a small sneeze. I prayed whoever was in the next room didn't hear it.

"Mack?"

Oh, it was Talianna. I gave a sigh of relief and poked my head through the door. She headed for me.

"You scared me so I hid in the closet." I explained.

"Isn't that a little cliche?" she asked, then she noticed the box, "What did you find?"

Before I could tell her I didn't know, the doorknob rattled again.

"Did you locke the door behind you?" I asked. She gave a quick nod and I grabbed her arm. I quickly pulled her inside and shut the door to a 3 inch crack just as the front door opened and a man crouched low to the ground slunk inside

"He's got a gun, Mack." observed Talianna through the crack in the door. I had put the box down and was hiding in the back, revolver in hand. I searched around for a weapon for Talianna to use and spotted a baseball bat on the top shelf.

"Get that bat," I told her.

"Can't you just shoot him?"

"Not unless I have to."

Talianna grabbed the rested it on her shoulder, ready to swing.

"Come on, lady! Come out with your hands up!" I yelled. As far as I could tell, there was no reason for anyone to be in here, unless they're up to no good.

I guess I didn't think of the possibility that I was not the only detective who hadn't searched the house yet. I started walking towards the kitchen, then I'd go upstairs and look.

When I passed the closet to get to the kitchen, the closet door flung open, and a woman wielding a baseball bat jumped out. She took a quick swing at me, but I ducked and it slammed the wall.

"Ouch!" she whimpered, the bat falling out of her hands. There was a nice dent in the wall, and I was glad that wall wasn't my head. I swung around and pointed my gun at her.

"Hands up!" I yelled. The frightened woman flung her sore hands up. "Who are you, and what are you doing here?

"I-I'm T-Talianna Periwinkle," She stuttered. "And I-I'm a detective, searching the house!"

"Identification?" I had heard of this famous detective. She bore a resemblance to Talianna Periwinkle, but I wasn't taking any chances. This gal tried to used my head as a baseball!

She reached her hand down slowly, and pulled open her coat. There it was: a certified detective's badge.

I put my gun away and reached out my hand. "Hello, Talianna! I've heard a lot about you!" I said. She was still stunned, but she smiled and shook my hand. I guessed that it didn't matter that she didn't now who I was, just that I wasn't carrying the gun.

All of a sudden, out of the closet jumped another woman. She slammed me with what I think was a lady's hat box, and I tripped over a coffee table. She pulled out her gun.

"Who are you?" She yelled at me, then whispered to Talianna, "Did he hurt you dear?"

"I'm Kevin Greene," I said, trying to sit up. I moved my coat to show her my badge as well. "I was about to search the house when I saw Talianna here in the window."

"Oh! Hello. I'm Mack Hazard." She said, putting her gun away, "Hope I didn't hurt you with the hat box."

"No, no. That's okay." I said, standing up, "The coffee table did more damage." I reached my hand out to shake her hand. Her badge was readily visible on her lavender sweater, so I knew she was a detective.

"Well, shall we get down to business?" Talianna suggested. "You two search upstairs, I'll look through the kitchen."

Mack and I went upstairs, and we started searching. I began looking through the bedroom, and with her apparent flair for small spaces, Mack looked through the closets and near the toilet. I had just called Mack into the bedroom to take a look at a note I found in the dresser, when a scream came from downstairs.

"Talianna?" Mack and I both yelled in unison, as we began bounding down the steps.

I tediously searched the kitchen. I wanted the place to myself. Mack and Kevin seemed trustworthy enough, but I only trusted my own eyes with this place.

I looked at the thirty or so pie tins, all reddened. It looked like it used to be cherry pie, but I wasn't sure. I was about to taste it when I looked more closely at the pie tins. Something wasn't right; the stains were not right for a cherry pie. I put the tin close to my nose and sniffed. I instantly recognized the smell; it's hard to miss when you're a detective.

The smell of blood.

I dropped the tin with a clatter and looked at the other pie tins. Each had the distinctive scent of blood. We weren't dealing with... a cannibal, were we?

"No, no, we couldn't be," I assured myself, but it wasn't working. My wits were at end.

I opened the kitchen cupboard and found more stacks of bloodied pie tins. I saw a note. I picked it up and read it.
There were numerous names on it, including Zachery's, which was crossed out. There were other names, but then I saw something truly frightening.

Mack, Kevin, my name, and several other famous detectives were on the list.

I screamed without realizing it.
