What do the factions do and what is the difference?

When your standings are good with a faction you can:
1. initiate a hunt
2. learn a special skill (each faction has its own skill)
3. buy special equipment (varies per faction and prices vary on your standings with them)
4. do a 'little job' to improve your standings with them
Just go to your faction and try it!
