You will do a favor for someone (just like any other favor)- but instead of loot, they will offer to help you on future cases.

You can never predict which favor will turn into a contact ahead of time although the first one turns up fairly early (I've heard around the 5th or 6th favor or 1000 experience points but it can vary)- and the second one will happen quite a bit later.

go to a shopkeeper and ask if there is a favor you can do.

Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes you get it fast. You can't control it, other then playing your favours.
