What is the value of owning real estate?

Once you have enough money you can treat yourself with an apartment of a size you can afford. What is the value if any beyond status of owning one? Also if there is a value, is it more significant if you own a bigger place?

You can store items and cases in the apartments, as well as having a private chat room and message board. The more rooms you have, the more room you have for furniture, which is what allows for you to have all those things.
