Take a look at the Writer's Workshop > Create Sleuth Content (new) under the CITY HALL tab Bess.
Ran is right, SM's aren't random and are complete stories, and they are usually written by members of the community for the community.
They stray from the usual format that the random mysteries take on: ie where all evidence in normal cases are hair, thread, footprint, note... in a SM evidence might include eg a glass eye, a tyre mark, and the scent of cigar smoke.
SM's give the author the chance to weave a story, to more fully develop the characters / suspects & plot line. Introductions, Crime Scenese, and Conclusions are usually much longer and very detailed and try to involve and entertain the reader as well as giving them pointers and clues.
(Take note would be authors!) Instead of only ever finding out that the motive for killing someone is 'A long forgotten slight', in a SM we are more likely to find out what that 'long forgotten slight' was in some *detail*. The suspects are not robots merely replying, but become characters in a play we continually come back to as we search for answers.
So suspects will answer more than just the usual automatic alibi / suspects / witness questions. You might ask a suspect 7 or 8 questions throughout the course of an SM.
Likewise Townies are used more often too, and with more variety than for just for confirming alibis and such. The Fortune Teller might be asked to conduct a seance for example. The Bartender be asked about his clientelle's drinking habits, or what they said in their cups.
So yes SM's are much different to Random mysteries and take much longer to play (and even longer to write) and whether you want to write one or play one you should be prepared for both eventualities.

No, you cannot recommend it for non-subscribers. All SMs/FMs are for subscribers only, with the exception of the Unread Will.
A writer creates the SMs and intros; we editors edit and approve them.
