Yes, subscribing costs real money, since real money is what it takes to develop and maintain the site! :) I find the price to be very low, for what you get.
When you subscribe, you'll get you 12 mysteries a day. You'll also be able to join or form detective agencies, travel between cities, and do Arch Villain hunts (once you gain enough experience). Subscribing makes the overall Sleuth experience much richer, and much more fun, in my opinion!
